What they do not know is that there are many advantages to traveling without a tour guide and a set itinerary. In A Perfect Trip to Italy—in the Golden Years, author and avid traveler Sharon Wilson shares practical tips and advice for those who want to make travel a real adventure without worrying about where they will sleep, eat, or catch the next bus or train. This volume concentrates on Italy and the cities of Florence, Venice, Rome, and Tuscany. Wilson outlines useful information for choosing the right travel companion, planning the itinerary, preparing for departure with passport and money, and arranging day trips. She also includes an Italian food vocabulary, a list of useful words and phrases, packing tips, and sample recipes. A Perfect Trip to Italy—in the Golden Years shows that enjoyable travel is still possible over sixty when the joints and bones are aching—neither age nor arthritis need be an obstacle.

Book excerpt: Politics is personal, Bill Bagley likes to say, and here is a personal journey through the politics of America's most extraordinary state. California's Golden Years offers tales of cash-filled envelopes, all-night poker games, and all the free liquor a legislator could drink. But the stories and the anecdotes offer more than mere fun -- they illuminate a larger lesson learned during Bagley's 14 years in the California Legislature. The personal relationships forged during a continuum of hosted bipartisan lunches and dinners are, in Bagley's view, the glue that ensures working relationships and pragmatic compromises. Those who play together, he writes, stay together. The Legislature of Bagley's era accomplished much for its state. With the population booming, California enjoyed the best schools, roads, and water systems in the nation. Today, as the Golden State faces unprecedented challenges, California's Golden Years offers both a look back toward a fondly remembered era, and an insider's explanation for why politics seemed to work better then than now.

Book excerpt: We were once again going on a cross-country tour. In November 2013, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Ali Eskandarian was murdered alongside two members of the Iranian band, The Yellow Dogs. In the months leading up to this terrible event, Ali had been in correspondence with a friend and Dutch publisher, Oscar van Gelderen, about his semi-autobiographical novel. Golden Years is that book. Set in the first decade of the 21st century in New York, Teheran and Dallas, Golden Years is a novel perfumed with excess and spirited decadence. It tells the story of a group of Iranian musicians in their twenties and our narrator, in his 30s, who is in thrall to the great American beats and has visions of Ancient Assyrian Futurism. Hungry and poor, high and hopping from bed to bed, and lover to lover, the characters in Golden Years are romantic exiles living with rock n roll as their religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In my younger days a fondness for Mexico encouraged numerous travels to this wonderful place south of the border. Many pleasant memories linger of the times spent there laced with a liberal amount of unfortunate experiences The Mexican travels are related in two parts, Mexico The Early Days chapter 1 (in two parts) And another, much later, A Mexican Fiasco of the 90's chapter 2 (in three parts). Having an affinity for the North Country, We also traveled there for many years, where I made many friends and had an abundance of wonderful experiences as well as a full ration of those less than favorable as described in chapter 3 Oh! For a Northern Adventure or Northward Ho Ho! The good fortune of meeting my life long Canadian friend, hunting and fishing partner, occurred on a return trip from the Northwest Territories in the sixties and is described in the Alaska (almost) chapter 4. Moose, bird -hunting and fishing were enjoyed during the years of these Canadian ventures, many of these stories and unforgettable incidents are included in the chapter 5 A Couple Times at Little Grebe' Also numerous moose hunts and adventures are described in Lysander, Root River moose hunt, and The Mascara chapters 6,7and 8. The second attempt at Alaska was a bit more productive than the earlier ones but even it was not without some interesting drawbacks as described in the Alaska chapter 9. After retirement to my river cabin for the last 18 or so years, I continue with many undeniably outrageous but stupidly rewarding as well as amusing activities as described in Tar Baby and Ku-Joe and the Buck, chapters 10 and 11. Las Vegas, chapter 12 relates an interesting experience on one of the many visits there.

Book excerpt: Father Andrew M. Greeley, one of America's most popular and trusted storytellers, has long charmed readers with his continuing chronicles of the crazy O'Malleys, an irrepressible and resilient Irish American family caught up in the rush of modern American history. The previous novels in the O'Malley saga, including A Midwinter's Tale and Second Spring, have taken the longtime Chicago residents from the early postwar era through the turmoil and malaise of the 1970s. Now, in Golden Years, Chucky O'Malley and his ever-growing clan enter the Reagan years---even as a series of painful shocks tests the family's strength as never before. The death of Chucky's elderly father brings the entire brood together to mourn, but what should be a time of unity is disrupted by the increasingly erratic behavior of Chucky's unhappy and emotionally unstable older sister, igniting a family crisis that ultimately threatens the lives of both young and old O'Malleys. Furthermore, as if their own struggles are not enough to cope with, Chucky and his wife, Rosemarie, also find themselves called upon to help an old high school friend whose beloved wife and daughter have disappeared inexplicably. To find Brigid "Bride" O'Brien and her innocent child, Chucky and Rosemarie must untangle a shadowy mystery that stretches from the bogs of Old Erin to the darkest chapters of the cold war. . . . There will hard days ahead but, with love and more than a bit of faith, the O'Malleys will bury their dead, dry their tears, and try to make the best of their . . . Golden Years. Book excerpt: The story takes up where Amelias Secrets left off; after the murder trial held in Jacksonville, Florida where the accused, great-great-grandson of President Thomas Jefferson, T. J. Eppes murderer of one of his best friends and father of six children walks out of the courtroom a free man. He returns to Amelia Island there to carry on life as usual with his beautiful young bride Katie, expecting their first child, only to find life for her to be a daily trial by a jury of her peers; an impossible situation in the end. Our protagonist John Whitner describes in detail not only their lives culminating in the great hurricane of 1898, which nearly devastates the island but through the lives of the Carnegies of Cumberland Island, Mrs. Leddy owner and operator of the Florida House Hotel and her only child Grace from age eight through her progression to adulthood, marriage, babies and widowhood at the young age of twenty one. John, himself reveals his journey through all this, his relationship with Pauline; its ups and downs, a new woman in his life (or women) as well as his passion for photography in the many places he visits, Jekyl Island, Charleston, S. C. during the earthquake of 1886 and Chicagos Worlds fair of 1893. Meticulous research and beautiful descriptions bring nineteenth century Amelia Island to life. With creative flair, Ms. Carter-de Vries uses the first person narrative of her storyteller, John Whitner, to recreate the turbulence of natural disasters and societys mores and make the past inhabitants of Amelia Island walk off the pages. Whether youre a visitor to the island or a life-long resident, you will find much to enjoy in Carter-de Vries Golden Years, Silver Tears.
