Understanding the phase separation mechanisms and controlling morphological evolution are very important for designing various advanced materials with novel mechanical, optical, electrical, and transport properties. In polymer blends, dynamic asymmetry is induced by a large difference in glass transition temperature. In this work, phase separation behavior of ternary blends of polystyrene/poly(vinyl methyl ether)/polyisoprene, PS/PVME/PI, and polystyrene/poly(vinyl methyl ether)/poly(ethyl methacrylate), PS/PVME/PEMA are investigated. Ternary blends of PS/PVME/PI and PS/PVME/PEMA exhibit complex phase separation behavior since PS and PVME have a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior, while PI and PS (or PVME), PEMA and PS (or PVME) have upper critical solution temperature (UCST) behavior. 2D and 3D phase diagrams for these two ternary systems were plotted by both Flory-Huggins incompressible and regular solution compressible models. Casting the solutions of PS/PVME/PI and PS/PVME/PEMA blends form two phase-separated domains in most compositions: (i) PI-rich or PEMA rich, and (ii) PS/PVME-rich. Post-annealing of such samples leads to the second-stage phase separation due to unfavorable interaction of PS and PVME at temperatures about 100°C. Such behavior that is observed for the first time provides a new potential method for making different morphologies with the same system by changing annealing parameters and composition. Washing one polymer at a time using a selective solvent is used to study the morphology of ternary blends. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy are used to study the kinetics and morphology of viscoelastic phase separation (VPS) in ternary blends.

Download or read book Characterization of Polymer Blends written by Sabu Thomas and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-02-09 with total page 972 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filling the gap for a reference dedicated to the characterization of polymer blends and their micro and nano morphologies, this book provides comprehensive, systematic coverage in a one-stop, two-volume resource for all those working in the field. Leading researchers from industry and academia, as well as from government and private research institutions around the world summarize recent technical advances in chapters devoted to their individual contributions. In so doing, they examine a wide range of modern characterization techniques, from microscopy and spectroscopy to diffraction, thermal analysis, rheology, mechanical measurements and chromatography. These methods are compared with each other to assist in determining the best solution for both fundamental and applied problems, paying attention to the characterization of nanoscale miscibility and interfaces, both in blends involving copolymers and in immiscible blends. The thermodynamics, miscibility, phase separation, morphology and interfaces in polymer blends are also discussed in light of new insights involving the nanoscopic scale. Finally, the authors detail the processing-morphology-property relationships of polymer blends, as well as the influence of processing on the generation of micro and nano morphologies, and the dependence of these morphologies on the properties of blends. Hot topics such as compatibilization through nanoparticles, miscibility of new biopolymers and nanoscale investigations of interfaces in blends are also addressed. With its application-oriented approach, handpicked selection of topics and expert contributors, this is an outstanding survey for anyone involved in the field of polymer blends for advanced technologies.
Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Phase Separation in Polymer Blend Thin Films by : Sam Coveney
Download or read book Fundamentals of Phase Separation in Polymer Blend Thin Films written by Sam Coveney and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-18 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work sheds new light on fundamental aspects of phase separation in polymer-blend thin films. A key feature underlying the theoretical models is the unification of one-dimensional thermodynamic phase equilibria with film evolution phenomena in two- and three dimensions. Initially, an established 'phase portrait' method, useful for visualising and calculating phase equilibria of polymer-blend films, is generalised to systems without convenient simplifying symmetries. Thermodynamic equilibria alone are then used to explain a film roughening mechanism in which laterally coexisting phases can have different depths in order to minimise free energy. The phase portraits are then utilised to demonstrate that simulations of lateral phase separation via a transient wetting layer, which conform very well with experiments, can be satisfactorily explained by 1D phase equilibria and a 'surface bifurcation' mechanism. Lastly, a novel 3D model of coupled phase separation and dewetting is developed, which demonstrates that surface roughening shadows phase separation in thin films.

Book excerpt: This 2-volume set includes extensive discussions of scattering techniques (light, neutron and X-ray) and related fluctuation and grating techniques that are at the forefront of this field. Most of the scattering techniques are Fourier space techniques. Recent advances have seen the development of powerful direct imaging methods such as atomic force microscopy and scanning probe microscopy. In addition, techniques that can be used to manipulate soft matter on the nanometer scale are also in rapid development. These include the scanning probe microscopy technique mentioned above as well as optical and magnetic tweezers.

Book Synopsis Phase Transitions in Polymers: The Role of Metastable States by : Stephen Z.D. Cheng
Download or read book Phase Transitions in Polymers: The Role of Metastable States written by Stephen Z.D. Cheng and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2008-09-10 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classical metastable state possesses a local free energy minimum at infinite sizes, but not a global one. This concept is phase size independent. We have studied a number of experimental results and proposed a new concept that there exists a wide range of metastable states in polymers on different length scales where their metastability is critically determined by the phase size and dimensionality. Metastable states are also observed in phase transformations that are kinetically impeded on the pathway to thermodynamic equilibrium. This was illustrated in structural and morphological investigations of crystallization and mesophase transitions, liquid-liquid phase separation, vitrification and gel formation, as well as combinations of these transformation processes. The phase behaviours in polymers are thus dominated by interlinks of metastable states on different length scales. This concept successfully explains many experimental observations and provides a new way to connect different aspects of polymer physics.* Written by a leading scholar and industry expert* Presents new and cutting edge material encouraging innovation and future research* Connects hot topics and leading research in one concise volume
