Book excerpt: Double N Adventures is a Canadian, applied, hands-on simulation that allows students to practice the office skills they need in order to succeed in an office environment. This office simulation is 'perfect' for the capstone course in an Office Administration program, and no other resource better prepares students for the variety of real-life situations in the workplace. This simulation allows students to practice office skills and adventures in the context of a fictitious Newfoundland adventure company owned by two brothers, Nick and Noah. Students play the role of Administrative Assistant for Double N Adventures Company, where they are expected to carry out many tasks, such as, submitting payroll information, creating documents and hand written notes, and much more. Students also test their skills in prioritizing, organizing and working towards different goals. "The Nelson text, Double N Adventures is a phenomenal text which allows those studying to become administrative professionals to apply, improve, and practice crucial workplace skills such as critical thinking, decision making, multi-tasking, organizing, managing time and overseeing an office."- Andrea Green, Office Administration Instructor, College of the North Atlantic-Labrador West Campus "I am so glad we finally have a book that simulates what today's office is about. Double N is fresh and exciting. It's Canadian and relevant to my students."-Kelly Taylor-Hulan, BA, BEd, Instructor, Office of Distributed Learning, College of the North Altantic, Corner Brook Campus "I really like the textbook. It's neat, and easy to read. I also appreciate the graphics because it gives me a visual idea of what something is supposed to look like."-Amanda Rideout, Student

Book excerpt: Tim Book Two is the follow-up to Telling Stories, the hugely successful memoir of Tim Burgess, singer of the Charlatans. In 2012, Tim published his hugely successful and critically acclaimed memoir, Telling Stories. Tim really enjoyed his new role as an author, and so here it is: Tim Book Two - a tale of Tim's lifelong passion for records, the shops that sell them, and the people who make them. In some ways, the biggest events in Tim's life happened in the couple of years after he had finished writing his first book rather than in the forty years before. So he had more to say, but instead of another autobiography he chose a different way of telling the story. Tim set himself a quest. He would get in touch with people he admired, and ask them to suggest an album for him to track down on his travels, giving an insight into what makes them tick. It would also offer a chance to see how record shops were faring in the digital age - one in which vinyl was still a much-treasured format.Tim assembled his cast of characters, from Iggy Pop to Johnny Marr, David Lynch to Cosey Fanni Tutti. Texts, phone calls, emails and handwritten notes went out. Here is the tender, funny and surprising story of what came back.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern audiences are most likely to encounter Yvain and other Arthurian characters in literature. We read Chrétien de Troyes's Yvain or Hartmann von Aue's Iwein, and easily slip into the assumption that during the Middle Ages the title character existed primarily, or even exclusively, in these canonical texts. James A. Rushing, Jr. contends, however, that many times the number of people who heard or read Chrétien or Hartmann must have known the Ywain story through the varieties of second-hand narration, hearsay, and conversation that we may call secondary orality. And man other people would have known the story through its visual representations. Exploring the complex relationships between literature and the visual arts in the Middle Ages, Images of Adventure: Ywain in the Visual Arts examines pictorial representations of the story of Ywain, knight of the Round Table, from the thirteenth through the fifteenth centuries. Of the images Rushing studies, only those found in the manuscripts of Chrétien's Yvain are placed in any obvious relation with a written text, and not even they can be construed as straightforward illustrations. Images of Ywain are presented without any textual anchor in the thirteenth-century wall paintings from Schmalkalden in eastern German and Rodenegg Castle in the South Tyrol; on the rich embroidery sewn in the fourteenth century for the patrician Malterer family of Freiburg; and in a group of English misericords that show Ywain caught in a moment of high adventure and perhaps comic embarrassment. "Pictures," according to Pope Gregory the Great, "are the literature of the laity." Navigating between the traditional disciplines of literary study and art history, Images of Adventure offers at once a detailed catalog of Ywain images, a series of close "readings" of works of art, and a concrete sense of what Gregory's oft-quoted statement may actually have meant in practice.

Book excerpt: Jaundice and Kale are back from their adventure on the high seas, and they are settling back into a quiet life in Dullsville, just the way they like it. The tea is tepid, the oatmeal is tasteless, and the socks are ripe for darning . . . until Aunt Shallot shows up and reveals herself to be anything but the dull relation they were expecting. Instead, she tells her nieces she is Magique, Queen of Magic, and she’s on her way to a big show and in need of two willing assistants. As Magique and the Bland sisters board the Uncanny Express, they meet a cast of mystifying characters. And when Magique goes missing, it’s up to Jaundice and Kale to solve the mystery—with the help of famous detective Hugo Fromage. An inventive story in the tradition of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, The Unintentional Adventures of the Bland Sisters: The Uncanny Express has all the whimsy and humor that readers who are looking for an anything-but-bland adventure will love.

The new edition continues to contain Bishop’s coverage of music, religion, literature, philosophy, and science.
