During a visit to London in 1821 he formed a close bond with Charles Gardiner, 1st Earl of Blessington and his wife Marguerite, Lady Blessington. After Lord Blessington's death in 1829 he continued to be a close companion to the widowed Countess whose London home hosted the most prominent members of fashionable literary and artitic society. D'Orsay had married Harriet Gardiner, Blessington's daughter by his first wife, in 1827 although it was not a happy union and a legal separation took place in 1838. This biography by W Teignmouth Shore (1865-1932) was first published in 1911 and includes 17 full-page illustrations.

Book excerpt: Though her beginnings were no more glamorous than most, author D?Orsay Logan accomplished some amazing things throughout her life?from raising seven accomplished children to seeing the world. In D?Orsay?s Story, she tells about the events that shaped who she has become. Filled with intimate details, this memoir starts with her birth in April of 1950 and includes accounts of growing up with her brothers and sisters, being brutally assaulted at age thirteen, getting married at sixteen while still a senior in high school, becoming a jockey in her early twenties, earning a nursing degree in her forties, and overcoming an addiction to alcohol. D?Orsay also shares stories of worldwide travels, during which she learned to skydive, swam in Loch Ness, stood in front of Stonehenge, and lived in African jungles. D?Orsay narrates a wide range of experiences from her life?the good, the bad, the sad, and the exhilarating. Intriguing and inspiring, D?Orsay?s Story communicates the message that life presents opportunities to overcome hardships and anything is possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive book traces the origins and progression of photography from its humble beginnings in daguerreotypes to the gradual mastering of photographic portraits, techniques, and negatives. The wider use of photography in journalism, for documenting architecture and art movements, and its capacity to produce piercing perspectives on the social and political climate of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries are all carefully evaluated, as well as the work of amateurs such as Zola who tried their hand at this revolutionary art form. Twenty-five years after the inauguration of France's first permanent exhibition devoted solely to photography, the Musée d'Orsay continues in its innovative and original thread. This book bears testimony to the unique nature of the museum's collection, noted for its rare finds, their quality, and the sheer number of works it holds (more than fifty-five thousand). The collection's most-treasured works are exposed here, including a portrait of Baudelaire by Nadar and the recently acquired portrait of Man Ray by Stieglitz.

He yearns to break free and roam the world. Then one day a small boy comes to visit him, and the power of his gaze, his wonder, his love is enough to start a wondrous transformation. Could it be that Pompon just needs a young art lover’s appreciation to journey all over the world? Inspired by the famous sculpture by François Pompon in the Louvre, this is a poetic, touchingly illustrated story that shows the power of imagination to bring art to life.

Oliver Twist is an orphan boy who starts his life in a workhouse and then gets sold into apprenticeship with an undertaker. He escapes from there and travels to London, where he meets the Artful Dodger, a member of a gang of juvenile pickpockets led by the elderly criminal, Fagin. Oliver Twist is notable for its unromantic portrayal by Dickens of criminals and their sordid lives, as well as for exposing the cruel treatment of the many orphans in London in the mid-19th century. Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime, and by the twentieth century critics and scholars had recognized him as a literary genius. His novels and short stories enjoy lasting popularity.

Book excerpt: Discover a new side of Paris, hidden in plain sight, with this beautifully illustrated guide to the city's smaller collections and best-kept secrets, from artists' studios to scientific museums. A visit to Paris can often seem like a highlight reel -- the Louvre, the Musee d'Orsay, the Eiffel Tower. But Paris isn't only about the big attractions; in fact, some might say it's the offbeat destinations that hold the greatest treasures. The Little(r) Museums of Paris takes a whimsical journey through these smaller destinations, from the fantastical to the bizarre, offering both a guide to the city and inspiration for armchair travelers. Rather than traveling by neighborhood, this charming guide explores the different types of institutions nestled within Paris, from time capsules like the Musee Nissim de Camondo to explorations of the world beyond the city limits, including the Institute of the Arab World. Readers will peek behind the curtains of artists' apartments and into the microscopes of collections of scientific oddities. Each entry opens up a new world of adventure, with a description of the museum's collection, as well as a short history, watercolor illustrations, and a miniature map. For residents and visitors alike, the captivating illustrations and deeply-researched yet approachable writing will encourage greater appreciation of the cultural diversity, history, and colorful characters that give Paris that je ne sais quoi.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New edition of the excellent introduction to Gustave Doré's paintings, engravings and illustrations of the world's greatest literature, from The Bible to The Divine Comedy. An artist who worked across many media, the multi-skilled Gustave Doré remains unequalled as a supremely talented illustrator, whose detailed and imaginative engravings for major works of literature – from Cervantes’s Don Quixote to Dante’s Divine Comedy, and even the Bible – have hugely influenced the way we see many cultural and literary characters and still inspire today (David Beckham has a tattoo on his chest of Doré’s The Agony in the Garden). This sumptuous new introduction to the artist focuses on these illustrations, first introducing you to his life, work and the rich seam of illustration history that he continued and ignited, from Blake and Fuseli to today’s newspaper comics, before presenting a carefully curated thematic selection of his finest and most important engravings. From his vision of Jacob Wrestling with the Angel to Crossing the River Styx, the work of this most prodigious and much borrowed-from artist is represented in glorious full-page reproductions.
