Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Doomed Religions This is, in effect, a book on the great religions of the world. True, it was not conceived with so broad a purpose, yet the very attempt to uncover the forces against which we have arrayed ourselves in many lands, by establishing Christian missions, reveals, in a general way, the errors and superstitions of the whole human race. It is truly wonderful how alike are the forms into which the beliefs and worship of men stray when they are left unhelped and unguided by the holy oracles. But we mean more than this, for there is really not one of the giant systems of religious error in the world to which these essays do not give attention. The particular method we have adopted in the production of this book has the advantage of giving us the testimony, the experience, the hopes, and the fears of those who have been eye and ear witnesses of that of which they write. The author of each essay is a devout believer in the Bible, and consequently no theories are broached that in the slightest degree contravene the teachings of the inspired volume. Book excerpt: At the heart of our current moment lies a universal yearning, writes David Zahl, not to be happy or respected so much as enough--what religions call "righteous." To fill the void left by religion, we look to all sorts of everyday activities--from eating and parenting to dating and voting--for the identity, purpose, and meaning once provided on Sunday morning. In our striving, we are chasing a sense of enoughness. But it remains ever out of reach, and the effort and anxiety are burning us out. Seculosity takes a thoughtful yet entertaining tour of American "performancism" and its cousins, highlighting both their ingenuity and mercilessness, all while challenging the conventional narrative of religious decline. Zahl unmasks the competing pieties around which so much of our lives revolve, and he does so in a way that's at points playful, personal, and incisive. Ultimately he brings us to a fresh appreciation for the grace of God in all its countercultural wonder.

The fear of fire-and-brimstone haunted Americans and shaped how they thought about and interacted with each other and the rest of the world. Damned Nation asks how and why that fear survived Enlightenment critiques that diminished its importance elsewhere.

Book excerpt: The tall tales of medieval pilgrims and the incitements of crusading preachers contributed their share to the hatred of Islam nurtured in most Christian hearts during the Middle Ages. Ridiculous legends grew up in the West relating to Mohammed, the stock in trade of preachers, who were always willing to inform their listeners about the origin of the Prophet and the nature of Islam. Pious Christians were usually assured that Mohammed had come to a bad end. Contents of this study: Early legends and prophecies; Christian hopes for the undoing of Islam; Bartholomaeus Georgievicz and the "Red Apple"; and Translations of the Koran and Increasing Tolerance of Islam. Illustrations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four Australian thinkers come together to ask and answer the big questions, such as: What is the nature of the universe? Doesn't religion cause most of the conflict in the world? and Where do we find hope? We are introduced to the detail of different belief systems - Judaism, Christianity, Islam - and to the argument that atheism, like organised religion, has its own compelling logic. And we gain insight into the life events that led each author to their current position. Jane Caro flirted briefly with spiritual belief, inspired by 19th century literary heroines such as Elizabeth Gaskell and the Brontë sisters. Antony Lowenstein is proudly culturally, yet unconventionally, Jewish. Simon Smart is firmly and resolutely a Christian, but one who has had some of his most profound spiritual moments while surfing. Rachel Woodlock grew up in the alternative embrace of Baha'i belief but became entranced by its older parent religion, Islam. Provocative, informative and passionately argued, For God's Sake encourages us to accept religious differences but to also challenge more vigorously the beliefs that create discord.

Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF THE YEAR • A thwarted love triangle of heartbreak rediscovered after almost two hundred years—two men and a woman of equal ambition—that exploded in scandal and investigation, set between America's Revolution and its Civil War, revealing an age in subtle and powerful transformation, caught between the fight for women's rights and the campaign waged by evangelical Protestants to dominate the nation's culture and politics. From the winner of the Bancroft Prize and the Francis Parkman Prize in History. At its center—and the center of a love triangle—Martha Parker, a gifted young New England woman, smart, pretty, ambitious, determined to make the most of her opportunities, aspiring to become an educator and a foreign missionary. Late in 1825, Martha accepted a proposal from a schoolmaster, Thomas Tenney, only to reject him several weeks later for a rival suitor, a clergyman headed for the mission field, Elnathan Gridley. Tenney's male friends, deeply resentful of the new prominence of women in academies, benevolent and reform associations, and the mission field, decided to retaliate on Tenney's behalf by sending an anonymous letter to the head of the foreign missions board impugning Martha's character. Tenney further threatened Martha with revealing even more about their relationship, thereby ruining her future prospects as a missionary. The head of the board began an inquiry into the truth of the claims about Martha, and in so doing, collected letters, diaries, depositions, and firsthand witness accounts of Martha's character. The ruin of Martha Parker's hopes provoked a resistance within evangelical ranks over womanhood, manhood, and, surprisingly, homosexuality, ultimately threatening to destroy the foreign missions enterprise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early years, Christian congregations looked to the apostles and prophets for leadership. But before the end of the first century, the apostles and prophets were systematically eclipsed by the office of the bishop. Doomed Edifice examines the daily lives of the early Christians in the midst of paganism, the structure and worship of the early congregations, and traces events that led to deterioration of doctrine and the eventual ascendency of the institutional Church in the fourth century. The author contends that the Church is in captivity today for its apostasy and rejection of the prophetic ministry---the same sin for which Israel was exiled. Although the Church may not determine for itself when its captivity is complete, it can realign itself to the Kingdom in anticipation of its restoration.

Hopeful." —Rabbi Sharon Brous, IKAR, author of The Amen Effect A deeply insightful exploration of how to live with wisdom, resilience and love in our turbulent times For the last quarter-century, author and activist Brian D. McLaren has been writing at the intersection of religious faith and contemporary culture. In Life After Doom, he engages with the catastrophic failure of both our religious and political leaders to address the dominant realities of our time: ecological overshoot, economic injustice, and the increasing likelihood of civilizational collapse. McLaren defines doom as the “un-peaceful, uneasy, unwanted feeling” that “we humans have made a mess of our civilization and our planet, and not enough of us seem to care enough to change deeply enough or quickly enough to save ourselves.” Blending insights from philosophers, poets, scientists, and theologians, Life After Doom explores the complexity of hope, the necessity of grief, and the need for new ways of thinking, becoming, and belonging in turbulent times. If you want to help yourself, your family, and the communities to which you belong to find courage and resilience for the deeply challenging times that are upon us — this is the book you need right now.

Book excerpt: A man without faith shares his views as the end of life approaches. The views are reflections on religion, morality and death.Historically, almost all unbelievers have maintained a low profile when it comes to expressing views on spiritual matters. This is understandable considering that expressing those views could result in execution using the most unpleasant methods available to the culture of that time.In most civilized societies the punishment for holding an unpopular view has moderated considerably over the centuries and the author believes it is good time to express his very own. It will be interesting, it will be provocative, and it may even be entertaining.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last kings of Juda led God’s people directly into exile and thus in the catastrophe of the destruction of the First temple. How did that happen? Who was responsible? What kind of role did God play in this drama? These questions will be addressed by Benedikt Josef Collinet. Unlike the narrative suggests, the kings were not the protagonists of the drama but the antagonists to God instead. God used the neighbouring peoples and Babel as tools of punishment. The reason for these punishments was the systemic covenant break of God’s people. The consequences of these punishments can be read in Deuteronomy 28. The story is a composed deconstruction of divine salvation promises. The salvation gifts were withdrawn but the promises still remained. The people needed a new beginning that with reference to the exodus could only be indicated or prepared by pardoning Jehoiachin (2 Kings 25:27–30).
