There is nothing Sylvia loves more than stories; so every day she asks her mother, the old woodsman and even her fairy friend Sister-in-the-Bushes to tell them to her. They weave magical stories of clever princesses, far-away kingdoms, courageous knights, kind children and graceful fairies. During the day, Sylvia also has her own adventures: planting a fairy tree, meeting St Nicholas and venturing into the deep woods. But as she comes closer to her special seventh birthday, there is one extraordinary adventure left. This enchanting collection of tales, charmingly told by Isabel Wyatt, takes us through the highlights of the year as Sylvia and her friends celebrate festivals and birthdays.

Download or read book Jack Kent written by Paul V. Allen and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jack Kent (1920–1985) had two distinct and successful careers: newspaper cartoonist and author of children’s books. For each of these he drew upon different aspects of his personality and life experiences. From 1950 to 1965 he wrote and drew King Aroo, a nationally syndicated comic strip beloved by fans for its combination of absurdity, fantasy, wordplay, and wit. The strip’s DNA was comprised of things Kent loved—fairytales, nursery rhymes, vaudeville, Krazy Kat, foreign languages, and puns. In 1968, he published his first children’s book, Just Only John, and began a career in kids’ books that would result in over sixty published works, among them such classics as The Fat Cat and There’s No Such Thing as a Dragon. Kent’s stories for children were funny but often arose from the dark parts of his life—an itinerant childhood, an unfinished education, two harrowing tours of duty in World War II, and a persistent lack of confidence—and tackled such themes as rejection, isolation, self-doubt, and the desire for transformation. Jack Kent: The Wit, Whimsy, and Wisdom of a Comic Storyteller illuminates how Kent’s life experiences informed his art and his storytelling in both King Aroo and his children’s books. Paul V. Allen draws from archival research, brand-new interviews, and in-depth examinations of Kent’s work. Also included are many King Aroo comic strips that have never been reprinted in book form.

Download or read book Wolf Story written by William McCleery and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2012-12-05 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This irresistible book is about: a father; his five-year-old son, Michael (intelligent, crafty, addicted to stories); Michael’s best friend Stefan (stalwart listener, equally addicted to stories); and, well—what else?—a story. Oh, and a wolf. It is as Michael always demands: a Wolf Story, which begins one night at bedtime and spins wildly on through subsequent bedtimes and Sunday outings to the beach and park in a succession of ever more trickily tantalizing episodes. Waldo the wolf is sneaking up on Rainbow the hen, when Jimmy Tractorwheel, the son of the local farmer, comes along. After that, there’s no knowing what will happen next, as while stalled in traffic jams or nodding off at night, the boys chime in and the story races on and Waldo finds, if not necessarily dinner, his just desserts. First published in 1947 and wonderfully illustrated by Warren Chappell, William McCleery’s Wolf Story is a delicious treat for fathers and sons and daughters and mothers alike.
Download or read book Twenty Acres written by Sarah Neidhardt and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 2023-04-21 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sarah Neidhardt grew up in the backwoods. She was an infant when her parents joined the back-to-the-land movement, uprooting their young family to move to an isolated piece of land deep in the Arkansas Ozarks, where they built a cabin, grew crops, and for years strove to achieve an ideal of agrarian self-sufficiency. In Twenty Acres: A Seventies Childhood in the Woods, Neidhardt revisits her childhood with compassion and candor. She retraces her parents' journey--from their affluent youth, to their embrace of pioneer homemaking and rural poverty, to their sudden and wrenching return to conventional society--using a trove of family letters and archival research. As she comes to better understand her family and the movement that shaped them, Neidhardt reveals both the treasures and tolls of their unconventional lives and offers a fresh perspective on what it means to aspire to a preindustrial life in the modern world"--
