Book excerpt: Can't a wolf just get some bacon? Authored by YouTuber Kyle Exum, Trap 3 Little Pigs is a modern twist of the original Three Little Pigs tale. Complimented by the "Trap 3 Little Pigs" song, the story involves a hungry wolf who just needs an entree for his dinner date, as well as three intelligent and athletic pigs. Although the story is structured as a children's book, the mixture of modern pop culture references and relatable humor is meant to be enjoyed by all ages. The words in this version of the story are modified from the lyrics in the "Trap 3 Little Pigs" song to be friendlier to young readers.

Book excerpt: The day the blizzard started, no one knew that it was going to keep snowing for a week. That for those in its path, it would become not just a matter of keeping warm, but of staying alive. . . .Scotty and his friends Pete and Jason are among the last seven kids at their high school waiting to get picked up that day, and they soon realize that no one is coming for them. Still, it doesn't seem so bad to spend the night at school, especially when distractingly hot Krista and Julie are sleeping just down the hall. But then the power goes out, then the heat. The pipes freeze, and the roof shudders. As the days add up, the snow piles higher, and the empty halls grow colder and darker, the mounting pressure forces a devastating decision. . . .Michael Northrop is the New York Times bestselling author of TombQuest, an epic book and game adventure series featuring the magic of ancient Egypt. He is also the author of Trapped, an Indie Next List Selection, and Plunked, a New York Public Library best book of the year and an NPR Backseat Book Club selection. Book excerpt: In today's increasingly competitive and insecure economic environment, we often question the reason for work: why am I doing this? Why is it so hard? And what can I do about it? Work may seem just a means to an end: we do it to earn the money to enjoy life outside the workplace. Here, Timothy Keller argues that God's plan is radically more ambitious: he actually created us to work. We are to work together to make the world a better place, to help each other, and so to find purpose for our lives. Our faith should enhance our work, and our work should develop our faith. With deep insight, Timothy Keller draws on essential and relevant biblical wisdom to address our questions about work. There is grace available if we have taken the wrong attitude, idolising money and using our careers to glorify ourselves rather than God. Keller shows how through excellence, integrity, discipline, creativity and passion in the workplace we can impact society for good.Developing a better attitude to work releases us to serve others humbly, to worship God everyday, and leaves us deeply fulfilled.

Over time that interest became a media sensation and a world-wide phenomenon. However, as her attorney I know that what you saw at trial is only part of the story. Have you ever wondered what happened before the trial began, what it was like to deal with Ms. Arias when the cameras were not rolling? In this book I detail for the reader what happened before the case began, what happened before the cameras were on. I detail the things that you do not know, things that will describe my reality, the reality that I was "Trapped with Ms. Arias."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our students aren’t learning, we’re falling behind other countries, and many of our college graduates are even functionally illiterate. We offer our kids a weak and poorly thought out curriculum; too many teachers do not make good use of classroom time and follow lesson plans that are superficial and repetitive; almost all state governments define “proficiency” at low levels of competency; and because kids with very uneven skills populate a classroom, teachers spend considerable time on review before introducing new material. This dismal picture is tempered by the fact that the hard work and dedication of countless teachers and administrators means that many students get an excellent education. But it doesn’t temper it much. As a group, even our top students are not as strong as are those in a large majority of other rich countries. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Katherine Baird, an economist, starts by clearly spelling out how our educational system is trapped in mediocrity. Yet, she doesn’t just expose where we are. She identifies the steps to get out of the trap. We need to (1) dramatically reform our education’s governance structure, (2) establish high expectations for all students, (3) provide adequate support to meet those expectations, and (4) introduce strong incentives for students to work hard in school so they do their part in meeting higher standards. Clearly, it isn’t as simple as it sounds, but Baird carefully examines each factor that has led to the current state in education and then spells out how a combination of policies will weaken the forces that keep our schools mediocre and instead make them ones worth copying

Book excerpt: When you lose your voice, who will speak for you? When it all seems hopeless, how do you get through each day? In the New York Times bestseller Ghost Boy, Martin Pistorius tells the harrowing story of his return to life through the healing power of love and faith. In January 1988, a happy, healthy twelve-year-old Martin Pistorius came home from school with a sore throat. Soon, he was sleeping all day, refusing meals, and starting to lose his voice. His doctors were mystified. Within eighteen months, his voice fell silent and his developing mind became trapped inside a body he couldn't control. Martin's parents were told that the unknown degenerative disease he was struggling with would mean that he had less than two years to live. He felt invisible--like a ghost of himself. The stress and heartache shook his family to the core, bringing his parents to the brink of separation. Their boy was gone--or so they thought. Martin started to come back to life. He couldn't make a sign or a sound, but he'd become aware of the world around him again and was finally finding his way back to himself. In these pages, you'll hear the highs and lows of Martin's journey from his own perspective, including: A family's resilience in the face of hardship The consequences of misdiagnosis The gift of a wild imagination Ghost Boy shares the beautiful, heart-wrenching story of a life reclaimed, a business created, a family transformed, and a new love that's blossomed. Martin's emergence from his own darkness invites us to celebrate our own lives and fight for a better life for those around us.

Book excerpt: The author decided to write Trapped in My Mind for herself and for others who have experienced disturbing moments in their lives. She underwent the most unpredictable and painful episode that a human being can go through. She hopes that sharing this experience with you will teach you and herself how to make a difference in the way people interact with one anotherthat together we will learn how to love and be compassionate and caring. However, she fears that all is gone now. What you are going to read is not a work of fiction, nor is it a love story. Its as real as the sky. In Trapped in My Mind, the author shares a very dramatic episode that recently happened to her. It is a treatise to societythat we must open our eyes and listen to the illness that might be lurking within and might hit us badly. If, through sharing, she can change how people perceive or judge just one person experiencing what she went through, she will have achieved her goal. This is why she is sharing her own story, sharing her mind. The events that transpire in Trapped in My Mind are real and have affected many lives, mostly the authors. When you see someone, anyone, wandering while talking to himself or herself, what do you think? What comes to your mind? Probably nothing. Or perhaps you just stare at the person. Maybe you even make fun of the person or just ignore the situation entirely. In truth, its a question that probably most of us dont know how to answer. When you have finished reading Trapped in My mind, you will probablythe author hopes, we will all probablybe able to better comprehend and learn how to react in any specific situation you might be involved in or witness along your path in life. We know so little about our minds and brains. But the author of Trapped in My Mind does know that the mind has a limitthat it cant take too much and continue to handle the situations we deal with on a daily basis. There are multiple ways to cope in life. Some people drink to forget. Others use drugs and so on to defend themselves, to protect themselves. But sometimes, the author would say that, more than we know, the mind shuts down perhaps because its the only way our minds know to manage a unique situation that could otherwise hurt us whatever that situation may be. The author was inspired to write Trapped in My Mind for those whove come out of just such a state of mindbecause they fought and they won. They were lost, and they found themselves. To all of you, she extends her sincerest congratulations and adds that you are strong and deserve the best of the best.
