Book excerpt: Did you know ... Injuries from falls are the number one reason children go to the emergency room every year. Over 2 million children suffer serious injuries from falls annually. Children are 100 times more likely to go to the hospital as a result of a fall than being hit by a car. Fall injuries are preventable! Why do falls cause so many more injuries than cars? Because we teach our children to be safe when crossing the street. Don't Fall Franny is a great way to start a fall prevention discussion with our children. Written and illustrated in a fun and light-hearted way, Don't Fall Franny allows parents and caregivers to teach children that falls are preventable. Use Don't Fall Franny to start a simple five-minute discussion that will make your children safer and may help avoid a visit to the ER. We all fall, especially kids. Don't Fall Franny's mission is to help children learn how to be a little more aware of their surroundings to help prevent serious injury, while still having a fun time! Children across the nation are playfully learning how to be safer in their everyday lives with the help of Franny and her friends.

Book excerpt: From executives complaining that their teams don’t contribute ideas to employees giving up because their input isn’t valued--company culture is the culprit. Courageous Cultures provides a road map to build a high-performance, high-engagement culture around sharing ideas, solving problems, and rewarding contributions from all levels. Many leaders are convinced they have an open environment that encourages employees to speak up and are shocked when they learn that employees are holding back. Employees have ideas and want to be heard. Leadership wants to hear them. Too often, however, employees and leaders both feel that no one cares about making things better. The disconnect typically only widens over time, with both sides becoming more firmly entrenched in their viewpoints. Becoming a courageous culture means building teams of microinnovators, problem solvers, and customer advocates working together. In our world of rapid change, a courageous culture is your competitive advantage. It ensures that your company is “sticky” for both customers and employees. In Courageous Cultures, you’ll learn practical tools that help you: Learn the difference between microinnovators, problem solvers, and customer advocates and how they work together. See how the latest research conducted by the authors confirms why organizations struggle when it comes to creating strong cultures where employees are encouraged to contribute their best thinking. Learn proven models and tools that leaders can apply throughout all levels of the organization, to reengage and motivate employees. Understand best practices from companies around the world and learn how to apply these strategies and techniques in your own organization. This book provides you with the practical tools to uncover, leverage, and scale the best ideas from every level of your organization.

Detective Trinity Calhoun's closest friend was due back weeks ago from his undercover operation, and the last thing she wants to do is take a trip. Not even to attend a high-profile conference at a swanky hotel on a beautiful island with all expenses paid. But with her boss counting on her, Trinity sets aside her misgivings and goes. Except from the moment she sets foot on the ferry, something feels…off. First comes a man who's far too interested in her. Then Trinity swears she's spotted her late-to-return friend. And someone—who could be an ally or a foe—is definitely planting breadcrumbs for her. Is a little girl missing or is that, too, a misdirect? Quickly, Trinity realizes the danger is closing in. And she's trapped. Hemmed in by a storm that's cut off both digital and physical access to the mainland. Her survival depends on her ability to differentiate between clue and bait. Because someone wants to help—and someone wants her dead.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do conservatives tell stories? Because it helps them win elections and assail liberal policies like health care reform and economic stimulus. "Why" is important, but the "what" and the "how" behind the stories that conservatives tell are equally interesting, and in this new book, David Ricci reveals all. He shows how conservative activists and candidates tell many tales that come together to project a large-scale story; a cultural narrative; a vision of what America is and what it should do to prosper socially, economically, and politically. Liberals, by contrast, tend to look for theories rather than stories, for mathematical explanations rather than theological axioms, for data rather than anecdotes, and for statistics rather than homilies. The difference is paradoxical. Liberals are unlikely to fashion sweeping narratives that capture the public s attention and commitment. Yet conservatives may tell attractive stories like the ones that got us into Iraq that momentarily capture voter support but end up costing the country more than it can afford."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While teaching at an all-black middle school in Atlanta, Meira Levinson realized that students' individual self-improvement would not necessarily enable them to overcome their profound marginalization within American society. This is because of a civic empowerment gap that is as shameful and antidemocratic as the academic achievement gap targeted by No Child Left Behind. No Citizen Left Behind argues that students must be taught how to upend and reshape power relationships directly, through political and civic action. Drawing on political theory, empirical research, and her own on-the-ground experience, Levinson shows how de facto segregated urban schools can and must be at the center of this struggle. Recovering the civic purposes of public schools will take more than tweaking the curriculum. Levinson calls on schools to remake civic education. Schools should teach collective action, openly discuss the racialized dimensions of citizenship, and provoke students by engaging their passions against contemporary injustices. Students must also have frequent opportunities to take civic and political action, including within the school itself. To build a truly egalitarian society, we must reject myths of civic sameness and empower all young people to raise their diverse voices. Levinson's account challenges not just educators but all who care about justice, diversity, or democracy.

Book excerpt: Don't Let It Happen is a life saving resource, designed to assist parents in detecting when their children are involved in an activity that can be harmful to themselves and/or other family members. Far too often, we take note when a young adult engages in harmful behavior, but we may not realize the broader impact their actions can have. As I will point out throughout this book, a young adult's actions can mean the difference between life and death for an entire family. This book is primarily for law-abiding citizens trying to raise their children and support their families. I hope it acts as a life raft in a sea of confusion. Read it and take the first steps toward personal safety for you and your children. After completing a distinguished 22-year career in the NYPD, Captain Eric Adams retired and was elected to the New York State Senate by the residents of the 20th Senatorial District in Brooklyn, NY. As a Captain in the NYPD, Eric Adams became well-known to New Yorkers as a thoughtful and tireless advocate. Currently, Senator Eric Adams serves as Chairman of the Veterans, Homeland Security, and Military Affairs Committee and Chairman of the Racing, Gaming, and Wagering Committee. He is a member of the Finance, Judiciary, Banks, Consumer Protection, and Energy and Telecommunications Committees. Eric Adams is also a co founder of 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care. A civil rights organization made up of law enforcement officials who dedicated their own time and resources to address issues such as: child abuse, gang awareness, police misconduct, racial profiling, youth violence and domestic violence. He received his Masters Degree in Public Administration from Marist College, and is a graduate of New York City Technical College and John Jay College of Criminal Justice
