Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book opens when I receive an unexpected phone call from Hector Elizalde, an employee at Don King's office in Florida. He is en route to a meeting in Europe and will return to the UK in a week's time. He promises to call again upon his return. He is as good as his word and phones with an offer to join Don King’s organisation where the expertise I gained while working for CNN International for ten years, can be put to good use. Satellite broadcasting provides a means of distributing current or delayed footage of boxing programmes to subscribers throughout the world. Consequently, my knowledge will generate more income from the sale of Don King’s boxing programmes. Subscribers download the satellite’s signals and, depending on time zones, they can broadcast the programming immediately or at a time of their choosing. Two broadcasts of the programme are permitted under the contract for each programme received. The book, while concentrating on the Don King story, intercedes with my life story up to the time when I eventually join Don at his office in Florida. My knowledge of an annual event, named Sportel, which is held in Monaco, persuades Don King to rent a booth where sales of programming are made to buyers eager to meet Don King. This results in increased sales of his boxing programmes and opens the way for Sportel to extend its reach to an annual event in Miami. Don King Came Calling, with its twists and turns is a remarkable book that will captivate its readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Larry Holmes is a boxing legend and often ranked by boxing historians as one of the best fighters to ever lace up the gloves. He held the heavyweight title for nearly eight years during what many fans and scribes consider the Golden Era of the sport. He fought his way to the pinnacle of success despite (and because of) unscrupulous promoters, crooked officials, naysayers, and the shark-infested waters of boxing's movers and shakers. But he kept on winning. This is his story. Unfiltered and raw. It's told with the help of business associates, competitors, broadcasters, friends, and family. This is Larry Holmes's tell-all view of his career and the boxing world. His observations, opinions, and insights bring you into the ring for his most noted fights (Norton, Ali, Cooney, Shavers, and Tyson) and shares with the reader what he thinks and how he feels. This book is a must-have for boxing fans.

Book excerpt: Without Ray Arcel (1899-1994), the 20th century world of boxing would have been markedly different. The credibility of it as a sport would have been greatly lessened. Arcel's prominence is all the more interesting because he made his mark not as a fighter, promoter, or manager, but as a trainer. From Benny Leonard to Roberto Duran and Larry Holmes, Arcel stood in the corner for champions of every weight division that existed in his lifetime, a record that remains unequalled. This biography chronicles Arcel's life inside the ring--and outside, where he was a highly secretive man who maintained relationships with some of the chief mob figures of his day. Through a wealth of information from Arcel's unpublished memoir, this work offers an extraordinary portrait of one of boxing's most influential and enigmatic figures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2016, Booklist observed, “Thomas Hauser is a treasure. Whatever he writes is worth reading. Boxing is blessed that he has focused so much of his career on the sweet science.” There Will Always Be Boxing continues this tradition of excellence. A poignant look at Muhammad Ali—whose life was celebrated throughout the world following his death on June 3, 2016—highlights this collection of Hauser’s work. The year’s biggest fights are, as always, put in perspective. And once again, Hauser takes readers behind the scenes, giving them a seat at the table with boxing’s biggest power brokers as he reveals the inner workings of the sport and business of boxing. There Will Always Be Boxing is sure not to disappoint the readers, writers, and critics who look forward to Hauser’s annual collection of articles about the contemporary boxing scene. This collection shows, once again, why Hauser is one of the last real champions of boxing and one of the very best who has ever written about the sport.

The dying words of the man King stomped to death on the streets of Cleveland in 1966 - Don, I'll pay you the money! - became the motif for Don King's ascendancy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. King’s best-selling account of the civil rights movement in Birmingham during the spring and summer of 1963 On April 16, 1963, as the violent events of the Birmingham campaign unfolded in the city’s streets, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., composed a letter from his prison cell in response to local religious leaders’ criticism of the campaign. The resulting piece of extraordinary protest writing, “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” was widely circulated and published in numerous periodicals. After the conclusion of the campaign and the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963, King further developed the ideas introduced in the letter in Why We Can’t Wait, which tells the story of African American activism in the spring and summer of 1963. During this time, Birmingham, Alabama, was perhaps the most racially segregated city in the United States, but the campaign launched by King, Fred Shuttlesworth, and others demonstrated to the world the power of nonviolent direct action. Often applauded as King’s most incisive and eloquent book, Why We Can’t Wait recounts the Birmingham campaign in vivid detail, while underscoring why 1963 was such a crucial year for the civil rights movement. Disappointed by the slow pace of school desegregation and civil rights legislation, King observed that by 1963—during which the country celebrated the one-hundredth anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation—Asia and Africa were “moving with jetlike speed toward gaining political independence but we still creep at a horse-and-buggy pace.” King examines the history of the civil rights struggle, noting tasks that future generations must accomplish to bring about full equality, and asserts that African Americans have already waited over three centuries for civil rights and that it is time to be proactive: “For years now, I have heard the word ‘Wait!’ It rings in the ear of every Negro with piercing familiarity. This ‘Wait’ has almost always meant ‘Never.’ We must come to see, with one of our distinguished jurists, that ‘justice too long delayed is justice denied.’”
