Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern colonization is generally defined as a process by which a state settles and dominates a foreign land and people. This book argues that through the nineteenth and into the first half of the twentieth centuries, thousands of domestic colonies were proposed and/or created by governments and civil society organizations for fellow citizens as opposed to foreigners and within their own borders rather than overseas. Such colonies sought to solve every social problem arising within industrializing and urbanizing states. Domestic Colonies argues that colonization ought to be seen during this period as a domestic policy designed to solve social problems at home as well as foreign policy designed to expand imperial power. Three kind of domestic colonies are analysed in this book: labour colonies for the idle poor, farm colonies for the mentally ill and disabled, and utopian colonies for racial, religious, and political minorities. All of them were justified by an ideology of colonialism that argued if people were segregated in colonies located on empty land and engaged in agrarian labour, this would improve both the people and the land. Key domestic colonialists analysed in this book include Alexis de Tocqueville, Abraham Lincoln, Peter Kropotkin, Robert Owen, and Booker T. Washington. The turn inward to colony thus requires us to rethink the meaning and scope of colonization and colonialism in modern political theory and practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together two key themes that have not been addressed together previously in any sustained way: domestic service and colonization. Existing studies of domestic service rarely make mention of colonization, but colonization offers a rich and exciting new paradigm for analysing the phenomenon of domestic labour by non-family workers, paid and otherwise. Scholars in diverse fields and disciplines here share new and stimulating insights on the various connections between domestic employment and the processes of colonization, both past and present, in a range of original essays.

Book excerpt: Elizabeth Pleck's Domestic Tyranny chronicles the rise and demise of legal, political, and medical campaigns against domestic violence from colonial times to the present. Based on in-depth research into court records, newspaper accounts, and autobiographies, this book argues that the single most consistent barrier to reform against domestic violence has been the Family Ideal--that is, ideas about family privacy, conjugal and parental rights, and family stability. This edition features a new introduction surveying the multinational and cultural themes now present in recent historical writing about family violence.

Book excerpt: A book which throws new light on our early history, "Home Life in Colonial Days" is a charming holiday gift of most unusual value, appealing to everyone who is of colonial blood; to everyone who now lives in the homes so greatly changed; and to every woman, - the homemaker. "The kitchen in all the farmhouses of all the colonies was the most cheerful, homelike, and picturesque room in the house; indeed, it was in town houses as well. The walls were often bare, the rafters dingy; the windows were small, the furniture meager; but the kitchen had a warm, glowing heart that spread light and welcome, and made the poor room a home.... The ears of corn were often piled into the attic until the floor was a foot deep with them. I once entered an ell bedroom in a Massachusetts farmhouse where the walls, rafters, and four-post bedstead were hung solid with ears of yellow corn, which truly "made a sunshine in a shady place." -Alice Morse Earle "Readable and curiously interesting....Mrs. Earle has remarkable zest and skill." -New Outlook "Useful and attractive....A fascinating volume." -The Dial "No other single volume constructs with such completeness, fairness and suggestiveness the atmosphere of colonial homes." -The Herald, Boston "Unique....valuable as well as entertaining." -Mail and Express "Mrs. Earle has already gained distinction as a fascinating chronicler of early American life and manners, and few writers carry the imagination back to the family traditions of olden times with the force and graphic power which she exercises over the minds of her readers." -The Bookman "An exceedingly interesting account....Especially recommended to those who wish aid in reproducing accurately the life and costumes of Colonial times." -University of North Carolina Extension Bulletin "Splendid material....Children will be interested in listing some of our modern furnishings that Pilgrims did not have." -Normal Instructor and Primary Plans

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The character of the Creole woman—the descendant of settlers or slaves brought up on the colonial frontier—is a familiar one in nineteenth-century French, British, and American literature. In Creole Crossings, Carolyn Vellenga Berman examines the use of this recurring figure in such canonical novels as Jane Eyre, Uncle Tom's Cabin, and Indiana, as well as in the antislavery discourse of the period. "Creole" in its etymological sense means "brought up domestically," and Berman shows how the campaign to reform slavery in the colonies converged with literary depictions of family life. Illuminating a literary genealogy that crosses political, familial, and linguistic lines, Creole Crossings reveals how racial, sexual, and moral boundaries continually shifted as the century's writers reflected on the realities of slavery, empire, and the home front. Berman offers compelling readings of the "domestic fiction" of Honoré de Balzac, Charlotte Brontë, Maria Edgeworth, Harriet Jacobs, George Sand, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and others, alongside travel narratives, parliamentary reports, medical texts, journalism, and encyclopedias. Focusing on a neglected social classification in both fiction and nonfiction, Creole Crossings establishes the crucial importance of the Creole character as a marker of sexual norms and national belonging.

Book excerpt: Examining the role of Asian and indigenous male servants across the Asia Pacific from the late-19th century to the 1930s, this study shows how their ubiquitous presence in these purportedly 'humble' jobs gave them a degree of cultural influence that has been largely overlooked in the literature on labour mobility in the age of empire. With case studies from British Hong Kong, Singapore, Northern Australia, Fiji and British Columbia, French Indochina, the American Philippines and the Dutch East Indies, the book delves into the intimate and often conflicted relationships between European and American colonists and their servants. It explores the lives of 'houseboys', cooks and gardeners in the colonial home, considers the bell-boys and waiters in the grand colonial hotels, and follows the stewards and cabin-boys on steamships travelling across the Indian and Pacific Oceans. This broad conception of service allows Colonialism and Male Domestic Service to illuminate trans-colonial or cross-border influences through the mobility of servants and their employers. This path-breaking study is an important book for students and scholars of colonialism, labour history and the Asia Pacific region.
