Book Synopsis Justice, Law and Culture by : J.K. Feibleman
Download or read book Justice, Law and Culture written by J.K. Feibleman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following pages contain a theory of justice and a theory of law. Justice will be defined as the demand for a system of laws, and law as an established regulation which applies equally throughout a society and is backed by force. The demand for a system of laws is met by means of a legal system. The theory will have to include what the system and the laws are in tended to regulate. The reference is to all men and their possessions in a going concern. In the past all such theories have been discussed only in terms of society, justice as applicable to society and the laws promul gated within it. However, men and their societies are not the whole story: in recent centuries artifacts have played an increasingly important role. To leave them out of all consideration in the theory would be to leave the theory itself incomplete and even distorted. For the key conception ought to be one not of society but of culture. Society is an organization of men but culture is something more. I define culture (civilization has often been employed as a synonym) as an organization of men together with their material possessions. Such possessions consist in artifacts: material objects which have been altered through human agency in order to reduce human needs. The makers of the artifacts are altered by them. Men have their possessions together, and this objectifies and consolidates the culture.

Book excerpt: This volume of essays by Japanese and Western scholars sheds light on the process of modernization in nineteenth-century Japan, focusing on two significant aspects of Japan's .transition to a modern society: the decision to live for a time with the necessary evil of relying on the skill and advice of foreign employees (oyatio gaikokujin) and the decision to dispatch Japanese students overseas (Pyugakusei). The. essays make clear that the success of both these programs went beyond aiding Japan's modernization goals; their indirect effects often extended much further than planned, influencing even today the fields of education, science, and history and affecting other countries' knowledge about Japan
Book Synopsis Transforming Fate into Destiny by : Samuel Wells
Download or read book Transforming Fate into Destiny written by Samuel Wells and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-03-04 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stanley Hauerwas is a distinctive and controversial theologian. His work demands attention in every debate on theological ethics today. His project is to transform Christian ethics from the fate of the individual in crisis to the destiny of the Church in its faithfulness. In this critical evaluation of Hauerwas' work, Samuel Wells sets out the drama and debate of Hauerwas' new agenda. He agrees that the Christian story is at the heart of the Church's practice. Yet he goes beyond Hauerwas. He draws attention to the neglect, in narrative ethics, of the way the Church's story ends. Wells intends that Christians finally see their lives in the context, not of blind fate, but of divine destiny.

Book excerpt: Author and leader who is also a servant; a motivator who is also a steward; a teacher: conscientious and innovative; a counselor: compassionate yet assertive. A man of integrity and honor; Elder Sean D. Smith is not only a minister but a visionary. While Webster’s dictionary defines excellence as the quality of being excellent; state of possessing good qualities in an eminent degree, exalted merit; and superiority in virtue; this definition could easily have been simplified by stating: the works of the Lord through Sean D. Smith Born May 4th of 1993, Sean is the only child of Latanya Williams. At an early age Sean developed a heart for God and his people. December 14th of 2008 Sean accepted his call into the ministry under the leader of Elder Daniel X. Smith. At the age of 15 years old Sean preached his first sermon entitled "Nothing Old Attached". While the road has not been easy Sean would say it has definitely been worth it and ten years later Sean has developed into a powerful young man of God flowing in all five ministry gifts. Elder Smith's life continues to be an example of the works of the Lord: how ability and anointing come together to create an illustration of a chosen vessel. Eyes have not seen, nor ears heard, the great things God has in store for Elder Sean D. Smith and his family.

Book Synopsis Between Truth and Power by : Julie E. Cohen
Download or read book Between Truth and Power written by Julie E. Cohen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-02 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A work of ambitious interdisciplinary scholarship that explores the ways that law and technology interact. Our current legal system is to a great extent the product of an earlier period of social and economic transformation. From the late nineteenth century through the mid-twentieth century, as accountability for industrial-age harms became a pervasive source of conflict, the US legal system underwent profound, tectonic shifts. Today, struggles over ownership of information-age resources and accountability for information-age harms are producing new systemic changes. In Between Truth and Power, Julie E. Cohen explores the relationships between legal institutions and political and economic transformation. Systematically examining struggles over the conditions of information flow and the design of information architectures and business models, she argues that as law is enlisted to help produce the profound economic and sociotechnical shifts that have accompanied the emergence of the informational economy, it is too is transforming in fundamental ways. Drawing on elements from legal theory, science and technology studies, information studies, communication studies and organization studies to develop a complex theory of institutional change, Cohen develops an account of the gradual emergence of legal institutions adapted to the information age and of the power relationships that such institutions reflect and reproduce. A tour de force of ambitious interdisciplinary scholarship, Between Truth and Power will transform our thinking about the possible futures of law and legal institutions in the networked information era.
