Book excerpt: Seeing, Doing, and Knowing is an original and comprehensive philosophical treatment of sense perception as it is currently investigated by cognitive neuroscientists. Its central theme is the task-oriented specialization of sensory systems across the biological domain. Sensory systems are automatic sorting machines; they engage in a process of classification. Human vision sorts and orders external objects in terms of a specialized, proprietary scheme of categories - colours, shapes, speeds and directions of movement, etc. This 'Sensory Classification Thesis' implies that sensation is not a naturally caused image from which an organism must infer the state of the world beyond; it is more like an internal communication, a signal concerning the state of the world issued by a sensory system, in accordance with internal conventions, for the use of an organism's other systems. This is why sensory states are both easily understood and persuasive. Sensory classification schemes are purpose-built to serve the knowledge-gathering and pragmatic needs of particular types of organisms. They are specialized: a bee or a bird does not see exactly what a human does. The Sensory Classification Thesis helps clarify this specialization in perceptual content and supports a new form of realism about the deliverances of sensation: 'Pluralistic Realism' is based on the idea that sensory systems coevolve with an organism's other systems; they are not simply moulded to the external world. The last part of the book deals with reference in vision. Cognitive scientists now believe that vision guides the limbs by means of a subsystem that links up with the objects of physical manipulation in ways that bypass sensory categories. In a novel extension of this theory, Matthen argues that 'motion-guiding vision' is integrated with sensory classification in conscious vision. This accounts for the quasi-demonstrative form of visual states: 'This particular object is red', and so on. He uses this idea to cast new light on the nature of perceptual objects, pictorial representation, and the visual representation of space.

The scholarship in this area, however, has left two important aspects of perception underexplored: its relevance to understanding a priori knowledge-traditionally conceived as independent of perception-and its role in human action. This book provides a full-scale account of perception, a theory of the a priori, and an account of how perception guides action. In exploring perception and action, it clarifies the relation between action and practical reasoning, the notion of rational action, and the relation between knowledge of the practical (of how things are done) and practical knowledge (knowing how to do things). In the first part of the book, Robert Audi lays out a theory of perception as experiential, representational, and causally connected with its objects. He argues that perception is a discriminative response to its objects; it embodies phenomenally distinctive elements; and it yields rich information that underlies human knowledge. Part Two presents a theory of self-evidence and the a priori. Audi's theory is perceptualist in that it explicates the apprehension of a priori truths by articulating its parallels to perception. The theory also unifies empirical and a priori knowledge by clarifying their reliable causal connections with their objects-connections many have thought impossible for a priori knowledge. The final part explores how perception guides action, the role of propositional knowledge in our abilities to do what we know how to do, the nature of reasons for action, the role of inference in determining it, and the overall conditions for its rationality. Addressing longstanding questions left unaddressed in the current literature, Audi's comprehensive theory of perception will appeal to scholars and students interested in philosophy of perception, mind, and epistemology.

The outward appearance is dressed up to hide what is on the inside. But the devil is a liar, what is outside should just be an enhancement of the beauty that is on the inside of them. The two must link up; the inside and outside have to connect in order to walk in the truth of God given self esteem. Self esteem is the inner strength, confidence, and beauty that we possess as human beings. It is not arrogant or haughty it is powerful. The enemy wants to take this from you. The bible says, the thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). The enemy hates God’s children, and the self esteem that reflects the glory of Jesus Christ blinds him from seeing and getting a shot to destroy it. The building up of self esteem starts in the mind. When a woman looks into the mirror, if she likes what she sees then her thoughts register and it is displayed outwardly. If she doesn’t like what she sees, she first analyzes if it is something she can quickly fix; such as a small flaw. Anything beyond her immediate control causes her to develop a complex which begins to develop in her subconscious mind and travels to her heart. This is the plan of the enemy leading to the destruction of her self esteem. The enemy seeks to devour our self esteem. His mission is to attack us with low self esteem in order to entangle us and hold us captive. He plays tricks with our minds to try to make us believe his lies. It is imperative that we do not come into agreement with him. Our mind and our thoughts must be subject to the Lord Jesus Christ. We have the power to command every thought that comes in our mind to be subject to Jesus Christ. We have to guard our hearts. God tells us in His word to guard our hearts for out of it springs the issues of life. (Proverbs 4:23). In other words it is what is in our hearts that show people who we really are. This is why we must be hidden in Christ; our place of refuge. He will keep us in His care so that who He say’s we are, will reflect to those who see us. As long as we walk this earth we will have enemies. King David was a giant killer. He defeated his enemies because the confidence inside of him came from God. The more confident we become, the more the enemy will try to destroy our self esteem. However, we already have power over him and his tactics so there is no need to fear him. In order to be all that God has created us to be we must build our self esteem on His foundation, it is a sure and eternal foundation. Self Esteem established by God is authentic. There used to be a saying, “Is it live or is it Memorex?” Is the sound of what we hear live, real, is it recorded, or is it someone else’s voice? Camouflaged self esteem is derived from someone else’s voice. Authentic self esteem is eccentric. Its beauty is exuberant. The principles of godly self esteem are not gender specific. God created men in His image and beauty so that same truth applies to men
