Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dogs, Children, and other Wild Things is a collection of ten stories using the personalities of real people in improbable circumstances. It is somewhere between Alice in Wonder Land, and The Wizard of Oz in the first three stories. Three girls face dangers and adventure in a fantasyland of Screamers and Book Worms. Using their own abilities, with assistance from grandpa to get in and out of the fantasy land, they end up with a unique treasure which will serve them well for going to school and acing the tests. The next five stories are about unusual situations, some of them non-human, and how they were resolved. And the last two are love stories, different from those in most romances. The stories can be read independently with enjoyment. However, since the personalities of the members of a real family are woven throughout them, they are best read from first to last. You are suddenly in a forest with a nine foot high bear and a ten foot high bird: Do you stop reading the story, or do you go along for the adventures to the very end? Your sister is a queen in the land of the Screamers. Can you rescue her? "X" and "Y" have been eaten by the giant Omni. Will all the computers in the world go bonkers? Are bees like wasps? Can you survive? Are wolves married? Do you have any other Questions? Is the US President about to be killed? Is this a job for Spy Dog? Can you become a billionaire? Ever try the Golden Gas? Have you ever watched a worm? What did you think about? Ever been ignored by someone you love? Did you try raisins? From your front yard you wave at an airplane. Can it be too high for you to hear it? Get the answers to these questions by reading, Dogs, Children, and other Wild Things Leo Farr is happily married and has five children and five grandchildren. He is presently retired from the State of California and living in Sacramento, California. Over the years, as a counselor and supervisor in the Department of Rehabilitation, as a coach for youth sports, and as a father he has shown a deep interest in the development of children. He has written one other book, Stacey and her Lessons in Learning.

A stray cat. A wild boy. A man who plays with fire. Eleven-year-old Zoë trusts no one. Her father left before she was born. At the death of her irresponsible mother, Zoë goes to live with her uncle, former surgeon and famed metal sculptor, Dr. Henry Royster. She's sure Henry will fail her as everyone else has. Reclusive since his wife’s death, Henry takes Zoë to Sugar Hill, North Carolina, where he welds sculptures as stormy as his moods. Zoë and Henry have much in common: brains, fiery and creative natures, and badly broken hearts. Zoë confronts small-town prejudice with a quick temper. She warms to Henry’s odd but devoted friends, meets a mysterious teenage boy living wild in the neighboring woods, and works to win the trust of a feral cat while struggling to trust in anyone herself. In this award-winning coming-of-age tale for young readers, Zoë’s questing spirit leads her to uncover the wild boy’s identity, lay bare a local lie, and begin to understand the true power of Henry’s art. Then one decisive night she and the boy risk everything in a reckless act of heroism . . .

Book excerpt: “Bella, Bella, Bella! A wonderful, funny, heartfelt tale of a very good ‘bad’ dog, and her enduring quest for that thing we all seek: a place to call home. I loved this book! I love Bella!” —Garth Stein, New York Times bestselling author of The Art of Racing in the Rain Perfect for fans of Racing in the Rain and Because of Winn Dixie! Ali Standish, author of the critically acclaimed The Ethan I Was Before and August Isle, delivers a rebarkable tale of one extraordinary pup’s search for a new family, inspired by her real-life rescue dog Bella. Bella is the very best dog a family could ask for. Only her family, the McBrides, don’t see it that way. Ever since Mrs. McBride’s belly started growing, they don’t seem to appreciate the way Bella cleans the crumbs from the kitchen floor or how she’s always willing to play fetch after a long day. And when Bella’s valiant attempt to save the Christmas tree ends in disaster, she finds herself being swiftly abandoned at the pound. As the reality sinks in that she is unwanted, Bella is heartbroken. Where did she go wrong? Things look bleak until a kind couple, the Roses, take Bella in. Her new life is filled with wonderful things like parks and snowballs, vanilla ice cream, and the National Geographic Channel. But as the weather turns cold again, the Roses start acting strangely and Bella wonders if she can really trust them. Do they actually love her, or is history about to repeat itself? And will Bella be able to find a true home in time for Christmas this year?

We try to balance enthusiasm with clear-eyed, honest engagement with the material and with our readers. Book excerpt: An irresistible, nostalgic, insightful—and totally original—ramble through classic children’s literature from Vanity Fair contributing editor (and father) Bruce Handy. “Consistently intelligent and funny…The book succeeds wonderfully.” —The New York Times Book Review “A delightful excursion…Engaging and full of genuine feeling.” —The Wall Street Journal “Pure pleasure.” —Vanity Fair “Witty and engaging…Deeply satisfying.” —Christian Science Monitor In 1690, the dour New England Primer, thought to be the first American children’s book, was published in Boston. Offering children gems of advice such as “Strive to learn” and “Be not a dunce,” it was no fun at all. So how did we get from there to “Let the wild rumpus start”? And now that we’re living in a golden age of children’s literature, what can adults get out of reading Where the Wild Things Are and Goodnight Moon, or Charlotte’s Web and Little House on the Prairie? In Wild Things, Bruce Handy revisits the classics of American childhood, from fairy tales to The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and explores the backstories of their creators, using context and biography to understand how some of the most insightful, creative, and witty authors and illustrators of their times created their often deeply personal masterpieces. Along the way, Handy learns what The Cat in the Hat says about anarchy and absentee parenting, which themes link The Runaway Bunny and Portnoy’s Complaint, and why Ramona Quimby is as true an American icon as Tom Sawyer or Jay Gatsby. It’s a profound, eye-opening experience to reencounter books that you once treasured after decades apart. A clear-eyed love letter to the greatest children’s books and authors, from Louisa May Alcott and L. Frank Baum to Eric Carle, Dr. Seuss, Mildred D. Taylor, and E.B. White, Wild Things will bring back fond memories for readers of all ages, along with a few surprises.

'I had a letter from George this morning - he says Corfu's wonderful. Why don't we pack up and go to Greece?' 'Very well, dear, if you like,' said Mother unguardedly. Escaping the ills of the British climate, the Durrell family - acne-ridden Margo, gun-toting Leslie, bookworm Lawrence and budding naturalist Gerry, along with their long-suffering mother and Roger the dog - take off for the island of Corfu. But the Durrells find that, reluctantly, they must share their various villas with a menagerie of local fauna - among them scorpions, geckos, toads, bats and butterflies. Recounted with immense humour and charm My Family and Other Animals is a wonderful account of a rare, magical childhood. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is composed of three long stories about coaching, eating, and mankind. Are these stories fiction or non fiction? In their entirety, they are neither, for in their entirety they are both. The fictitious part of the stories illustrates a real problem that needs a resolution, a solution, and that solution leads to a reality that can be used by people to resolve real problems that permeate the lives of many of them. The stories are like a beautiful spider's web showing signs of struggle - and at it heart a beast capable of ruining a marvelous sport, preventing the control of an addition, and killing its own mate. Sometimes the solution is so drastic that it would never be used, maybe. Since I couldn't find a word that adequately described the stories written in this book, I made one up. The word is Ficlution: Fic, the first syllable of fiction-lu, the middle syllable of solution-and tion, the last syllable of fiction and solution for a new word: Ficlution, meaning fiction which is about a real problem needing a solution, a form of story which focuses emotions toward a reality of facts, a form of story that causes the reader to analyze and think, even as they read for the pure enjoyment of the story, that is if it works, and, of certainty, that is up to the reader. Leo Farr is happily married and has five children and five grandchildren. He is presently retired from the State of California and living in Sacramento, California. Over the years, as a counselor and supervisor in the Department of Rehabilitation, as a coach for youth sports, and as an author he has shown a deep interest in the development of children and the personality of adults. He has written two other books: Stacey and her Lessons in Learning and Children, Dogs, and other Wild Things.
