Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WHEN Catholic Dogma is mentioned there are those who ask, is it worth while to spend time in discussing dogma when there is so tl1uch, york to be done? Give your mind and your labor, they say, to the rescue and help of the wretched and the depraved, the sinful and the unfortunate; go and practise toward them that love which is the fulfilling of the law; but do not waste your energies upon disputations about creeds. Yet the Church has always occupied itself very largely with dogma, and has strenuously insisted upon the importance of it. With a world to convert, S. Paul filled his letters chiefly with dogma. In the tremendous decline and fall of the Roman empire, and wreck of civilization, the Church dwelt on dogma perpetually, and the Church was in earnest then as now to convert and save the world. In tilnes of reformation not only is righteousness of life emphasized, but the faith of the Church is scrutinized with the keenest criticism. Hoe does it happen that at specially critical times dogma is made so prominent in the Church's life? Inasmuch as it is the peculiar business of the Church, among all the institutions in the world, to teach Christianity, anything that it has uniformly held to be matter of highest importance has a strong a priori claim upon our attention. We cannot excuse ourselves for not attending to it by saying that: it does not interest us. If it be important it is our duty to attend to it. If it make any difference 'whether we believe one thing or another, we are bound to find out what the truth is and to maintain it. In determining whether it is worth while to spend our time in studying and discussing the dognlas of Christianity, we need first to see clearly what Christianity really is. If it were merely a system of conduct, or a system of conduct and worship, much might fairly be said in disparagement of creeds and theology. The fulfilling of the law is love to God and love to man; why trouble ourselves with anything more? A popular expression of the day is that Christianity is a life and not a doctrine; therefore, it is urged, let us devote all our energies to right living and not mind the disputations of the schools

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dogma is one of those words. Many people see dogma as a bad thing-as the unreasonable, unthinking adherence to a belief, even in the face of contrary evidence. But when the Catholic Church presents some of her teachings as dogmas, she does not mean that these tenets are irrational or to be thoughtlessly embraced. Dogma is the bedrock of truth, an inexhaustible feast for the mind, not an impediment to thinking. Why? Because dogmas rest on the Word of God, Truth Himself, who can neither deceive nor be deceived, and who wants his Word to be known. The great theologian Charles Journet explores the meaning of dogma in his classic work What is Dogma? In what sense are dogmas an object of faith? How do reason and faith relate to dogmas? How are dogmas both essentially unchangeable and yet open to development? Are dogmas accessible only in learned theological language or are there common-sense ways of understanding them? Journet addresses these and other important questions. He also discusses examples of dogmatic development: the dogmas of the Trinity, of Christology, and of Mariology. And he explores the relationship of dogma and mystical contemplation. In short, Journet shows why "dogma" is a subject of which Catholics need not be afraid.

Book excerpt: "The English translation of my "Grundriss der Dogmengeschichte" has been made, in accordance with my expressed wish, by my former pupil and esteemed friend, Mr. Edwin Knox Mitchell. It is my pleasant duty to express to him my heartiest thanks. English and American theological literature, possess excellent works, but they are not rich in products within the realm of the History of Dogma. I may therefore perhaps hope that my "Grundriss" will supply a want. I shall be most happy, if I can with this book do my English and American friends and fellow-workers some service - a small return for the rich benefit which I have reaped from their labors. In reality, however, there no longer exists any distinction between German and English theological science. The exchange is now so brisk that scientific theologians of all evangelical lands form already one Concilium. Adolf Harnack. Wilmerdorf near Berlin, March 17th, 1892"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a playful foreword that isn't, Juan Luis Segundo calls his present work posthumous - both because the sensitivity of the topic puts any future works in jeopardy, and because it provides the logical key to all his previous theological work. Thirty years a theologian, Segundo has tried to interpret the meaning of the gospel for believers today. One of the pioneers of Latin American liberation theology, he has tried especially to discern the relevance of faith to the emancipation of human beings from conditions of oppression. In 'The Liberation of Dogma' he turns to foundational questions of Christian faith seldom addressed by liberation theology: the meaning of revelation, and its articulation in dogma. Beginning with a brilliant historical survey of the development of scripture, Segundo lays the basis for his understanding of revelation as a process of divine pedagogy, an interaction between God and the human community in which the latter learn how to learn. The subsequent history of dogma reflects a continuation of the biblical story as the church learns to test and apply paradigms of faith to the challenges of an unfolding cultural and historical situation. Segundo examines the collision that occurred in the Middle Ages, when Greek dogmatic formulations -carefully worded to address problems posed by Hellenistic culture - were imposed on the new barbarian tribes as ready-made truths. This resulted in the loss of a dynamic understanding of revelation and faith, from which the church has only emerged since Vatican II. In his conclusion, Segundo develops a theology of revelation attuned to the signs of the times, a perspective influenced by the experience of Latin America's base communities. According to Segundo, Knowledge of God as 'revealing' something occurs to us when we are discovered to have a historical sensitivity that converges with God's own intentions. It is from a perspective and practice attuned to the Reign of God that we are free to discern God's revelation in history today.

Book excerpt: Philip Schaff's The Creeds of Christendom is a massive set, originally published in three volumes and here reproduced across five volumes, cataloging and explaining the many different creeds from the myriad Christian denominations. The differences in belief between Calvinists, Lutherans, and Presbyterians, for example, can often be subtle, so a thorough examination of the particulars as well as an explanation for how those different beliefs result in a different worldview is necessary. Volume One: Part I covers: . creeds in general . the Ecumenical creeds . the creeds of the Greek Church . the creeds of the Roman Church . the creeds of the Evangelical Churches . the creeds of the Evangelical Lutheran Churches . the creeds of the Evangelical Reformed Churches. This volume contains the table of contents for all of Volume One. Swiss theologian PHILIP SCHAFF (1819-1893) was educated in Germany and eventually came to the United States to teach at the German Reformed Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania. He wrote a number of books and hymnals for children, including History of the Christian Church and The Creeds of the Evangelical Protestant Churches.
