Book excerpt: Historically, colleges and universities have used intelligence-based admissions tests to select students who demonstrate the intelligence to succeed academically. These institutions also have employed strategies to help students stay in school and graduate. However, despite tests and support strategies, the National Center for Education Statistics in 2018 reported a six-year completion rate of about 60% of first-time, full-time bachelor's degree-seeking students for the 2010 cohort, including both traditional and online students. One study shows retention in online classes can be 10% to 15% lower than in traditional face-to-face courses (Carr, 2000). Meanwhile, higher education institutions today face increasing pressure to raise graduation rates, which are sometimes linked with state funding. This has inspired administrators and faculty to search for more ways to help admitted students succeed. Angela Duckworth and other researchers contend that intelligence alone does not mean success in long-term goals, like earning a bachelor's degree. Duckworth contends people need Grit - a combination of passion and perseverance. This study set out to determine whether Grit mattered in the academic success of online undergraduate students at the University of Arkansas. It focused on determining whether these students' Grit scores, collected through a survey, correlated to GPA and persistence (enrolling in spring 2019 or graduating in fall 2018). If Grit mattered, the survey could be used as another tool to identify students who needed extra support, before they dropped out of college. The Grit-S survey was administered to all 998 University of Arkansas students identified as studying in online undergraduate degree programs. About 200 responded, identified themselves as studying in online degree programs, and agreed to provide the researcher access to their 2018 fall semester GPA and/or their enrollment status (enrolled or not) in spring 2019. Contrary to many other Grit-based studies, this U of A study showed no statistically significant relation between students' Grit scores and their fall GPA and persistence, when other predictors and covariates were controlled. It appears the Grit survey would not be a useful tool in helping U of A administrators and faculty identify online students who would benefit from additional support.

Book excerpt: This study investigated the relationship between four sub-scales scores of the Grit Scale and academic success measured by the end of first-year college grade point average among first generation college students of color to determine whether this relationship is relevant for enhancing the university's admissions process. The Grit Scale is a self-assessment instrument that measures the noncognitive personality trait of grit and includes four sub-scales -Grit Overall (GO), Perseverance of Effort (PE), Consistency of Interest (CI), and Ambition. A convenience sample of 217 first-year college students at a small private Midwestern university participated in this study. Alongside the Grit Scale score, the other independent variables of this study are high school grade point average score and the American College Testing composite score (ACT). The dependent variable is the end of first-year college grade point average (CGPA). Pearson's and Spearman's correlation analyses were utilized to test the research hypotheses. The findings indicate that high school grade point average is strongly correlate with CGPA for both groups of students, ACT is strongly correlated with CGPA for first-generation students of color and moderately correlated among traditional students, and none of the Grit Scale subscales show correlation with CGPA except Ambition that correlated moderately with CGPA of first-generation students of color.

However, like others before it, this study does not indicate support for overall grit scores on student retention and persistence outcomes. Therefore, grit should not be considered as a non-cognitive predictor for the admissions process. These null findings were present for overall grit scale scores and grit subdimension scores (passion, perseverance). One significant interaction was found between Pell recipiency and the perseverance subdimension of the grit scale in predicting persistence through graduation, which may imply that students at high risk of stopping or dropping out of college with higher perseverance grit scale scores may be more likely to persist towards earning a degree. Moving forward, professionals interested in using the overall grit scale to capture predictive validity should carefully consider if the overall grit scale is the most precise tool available for study. Furthermore, proponents of grit should consider the study of the subdimension of perseverance of effort, introducing grit to students as an intervention after college enrollment, and the study of alternative non-cognitive predictors with the potential to forecast retention and persistence. Finally, and most importantly, scholars well versed in the overall grit literature must share their knowledge across campus, especially with institutional strategic leaders and practitioners, to ensure that professionals interested in using grit as an intervention fully understand its capabilities and limitations.

Some researchers have shown that a higher level of grit assisted college students in earning a higher grade point average (GPA) and completing a college credential. My study focused on grit and its relationship to college GPA, course completion rate, and the number of activities and programs participated in during one semester, along with the interaction effects of grit with a growth mindset on GPA and course completion rate through five research questions. A survey was administered to community college students participating in a TRIO Student Support Services Program (SSS), qualifying for the program as low-income, first-generation, and/or students with disabilities. Analysis of the data obtained from the survey helped to answer the research questions using linear regression, standard multiple regression, and correlation. There was little research focusing on the relationship between grit, college GPA, and course completion rates for underserved students in TRIO SSS programs, especially at community colleges, along with few research studies that look at an interaction effect between grit and growth mindset regarding college achievement. This study was unable to provide statistically significant results to show relationships between grit, college GPA, course completion rate, or the number of TRIO SSS services and activities participated in, nor an interaction effect between grit and college completion rate on GPA & completion rate. Limitations and future research recommendations are discussed.

Grit levels were measured using the eight-item Grit-S scale that was administered to students in classes of a large suburban community college. Individual-level institutional data also were collected at the time of application and during the time students were enrolled. Community college student success was assessed using two measures: (1) students' completion of all the courses they enrolled in at the beginning of the semester, and (2) students' end-of-semester, noncumulative, grade point average. Persistence was assessed by determining students' enrollment status during the semester immediately following data collection. If students were enrolled as of the college's official census day, they were considered to have persisted. Preliminary bivariate correlations were conducted in addition to multiple linear regressions. Multiple logistic regression was performed to determine to what extent grit predicted end-of-semester grade point averages, course completion rates, and semester-to-semester persistence of community college students. The results of the study indicated that grit was a predictor of student success; "grittier" community college students were more likely than students with lower grit scores to complete the classes they enrolled in and to have higher end-of-semester grade point averages. Grit was not found to be a predictor of semester-to-semester persistence.

Research on predictors of postsecondary performance has focused significantly on the relationship between performance and traditional cognitive measures, yet a growing body of literature examines other factors that may play a role, including that of grit, a non-cognitive trait described as a disposition toward perseverance and passion for long-term goals. Moreover, for graduates who enter the workforce in a profession as demanding as teaching, characteristics such as grit have proven significant in terms of their linkage with success in the profession. This quantitative study was an examination of the relationship between grit and academic performance in order to more accurately identify what may contribute to students postsecondary academic performance. Specifically, this study compared the predictive value of grit scores to that of high school GPA and SAT scores, two cognitive variables which have long been considered the best predictors of student academic performance. This study also investigated the role of grit in predicting student GPA in postsecondary study. The study sample was comprised of 130 native first- or second-year students majoring in education. Data for this quantitative study come from the online administration of the Grit-S survey in conjunction with institutional data on student performance. The overall findings of this study contribute to the increased understanding of the complexities related to predictors of postsecondary student performance, specifically in regard to undergraduate students pursuing degrees in education. The findings illustrate a positive, statistically significant relationship between grit and academic performance. Consistent with previous studies, HSGPA was identified as a significant predictor of success at the postsecondary level. Additional key findings and their implications for practice in higher education are presented along with offerings for further research opportunities.

Braxton and associates’ Revised Theory of Student Departure in Commuter College and Universities served as the theoretical framework for this study. This study was exploratory, sequential mixed method design, incorporating survey data from 2015 as well as qualitative interview data from 2020 and 2021. Results indicated a negative, moderate relationship between grit scores and mindset scores, a weak, negative relationship between academic mindset and first-year college GPA, a positive, moderate relationship between grit scores and first-year GPA. In addition, participants perceived that having a productive academic mindset, family support, supportive faculty and staff, flexible course offerings, and affordability could be factors influencing their persistence in postsecondary education settings. Given these findings, institutions should consider developing programming to improve faculty and staff support, becoming more family friendly, utilizing intentional and flexible course scheduling, and review costs of obtaining a postsecondary credential and begin to look for more ways in which college might be more affordable.

Analysis of qualitative data yields the common attributes among the target population and the life events responsible for developing their resiliency. This study informs the reader about the sources of motivation for first-generation college students and how they persevered through setbacks in order to graduate from college. The results revealed that first-generation college graduates are positively impacted by higher education which is evidenced by their social mobility. The findings from this study may cause researchers to continue the work to discover what motivates first-generation students to persist through college in order to earn their four-year degree.

Traditionally, cognitive abilities such as aptitude and intelligence have been used to measure and predict whether a student will be successful in college. However, there is evidence that noncognitive abilities such as determination or effort are as important and as indicative of success as cognitive abilities. This nonexperimental, causal-comparative study utilized a multivariate analysis of variance to analyze archival data of 832 undergraduate students from a large private university to determine the differences between the overall grit score, perseverance of effort subscore, and consistency of interest subscore of students who persist and those who do not persist. For the purpose of this study, persistence was defined as a first-year undergraduate students’ retention at the institution from the first term to second consecutive term. No significant difference was found between students who persisted and those who did not. The findings indicate the usefulness of measuring college students’ overall grit scores and grit’s subscores in order to determine whether or not they will persist at the institution, and further opportunities are presented in order to accomplish more research on the relation of noncognitive abilities to student persistence at the college level.

Book excerpt: The pathway for community college students to transfer vertically into four-year institutions to complete a bachelor's degree was designed nearly a century ago, yet it remains plagued by the same structural problems, such as confusing admissions processes, lack of transparent advising resources, and unrealistic time-to-degree demands without guidance (Handel & Williams, 2012). These transfer pathways have been built upon cognitive variables and provide minimal insight into the role non-cognitive qualities play in vertical transfer students' first-semester academic performance and social integration. This quantitative non-experimental study examined the relationship between 405 vertical transfer students' self-reported grit, academic performance, and social integration during their first semester of enrollment in a four-year college or university. The students are referred to in the study as the VTR cohort. Following analysis of the cohort's Short Grit Scale (Grit-S) surveys, along with academic performance and social integration data retrieved from the study site's Ellucian Banner, Canvas, and OrgSync platforms, the data provided clear conclusions to the research questions. Except for a weak statistically significant negative correlation between students' grit and missing assignments in Canvas, one of the variables defining the VTR cohort's academic performance, there was no statistically significant relationship between grit and the cohort's academic performance or social integration and no difference in grit scores based upon grade point average (GPA) performance above or below 2.00. The study findings suggest that vertical transfers demonstrate the capacity to successfully complete an associate degree, and therefore are "gritty" upon entrance into a four-year institution. Strayhorn's (2008) research demonstrated a positive association between grit and achievement, which serves to support the lack of such a relationship in this study. Furthermore, vertical transfer students may opt not to formally engage with structured social integration platforms and services within four-year institutions, but the absence of formal engagement does not correlate with students' low grit scores or any significant reduction in their academic performance. Based upon these conclusions, the researcher recommends the study site and the field of higher education continue to examine the non-cognitive variables and practices that may impact the transfer pathway, both for vertical transfers and for the 13 other subsets within the transfer population (Handel & Williams, 2012). Conclusively, further qualitative research is suggested to explore the personal experiences of vertical transfer students during their transition into four-year institutions.

The purpose was to determine if the use of vignettes provided more validity evidence than short simple-sentence item endorsements. The data were gathered from a sample population of undergraduate students from The University of Alabama. Focus group data were gathered to help provide insight during the item development process, and an expert panel was used to help select which items were most appropriate based on the item content. A pilot study was conducted to see how the initial item pool was functioning. The results from the pilot facilitated in the selection of the final items to form the Grit-V. The study therefore investigated whether the Grit-V provided more validity evidence than the existing measure of grit (Grit-S). The study further investigated the relationships between grit and other non-cognitive constructs (student engagement, academic motivation, and the Big Five personality dimensions). Additionally, the study determined the predictive strength of grit and the other variables on student success, which was measured by student GPA, classes dropped, and changed majors. Finally, the study investigated whether socioeconomic status was a significant moderator variable between grit and GPA. The results showed that the Grit-V provided more evidence of validity than the Grit-S. Grit and conscientiousness were the strongest predictors of GPA, and grit, academic motivation, and student engagement were the strongest predictors of dropping classes. Grit was not a significant predictor for changed majors. Additionally, SES was not a significant moderator variable in the predictive model.

Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship between factors of GEMM (grit, efficacy, mindset & motivation) and academic probation status removal as well as student perception of personal contributors to academic probation, tutorial interventions, and the effectiveness of a mandatory academic probation workshop at a large urban community college in Southern California. A mixed-method design was used. Survey data, as well as personal interview data, was collected. A total of 695 students out of 830 students who were placed on A1 probation status attended a mandatory workshop prior to the beginning of the Fall 2015 semester. Out of the 695 students, 194 completed their GEMM pre-survey correctly and were assessed to determine if factors of GEMM correlated with successful academic probation status removal. A total of 211 students expressed interest in participating in the review of GEMM tutorial interventions, with 31 students committing to participate in the intervention program, and only 13 completing. Academic self- efficacy was the only GEMM factor found to be predictive of academic probation status removal. Student perception of the online GEMM tutorial interventions was overwhelmingly positive with the majority of the students favoring the video content of personal student interviews. Participation and follow-through proved to be problematic for this study, and only 79 out of the 695 students on A1 academic probation returned to good standing by the following semester. Implications and recommendations for future research are contained within.

Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this study was to collect evidence on the construct validity of grit using convergent, discriminant, and predictive validity principles. To accomplish this purpose and extend previous research on grit, college students from two schools completed an instrument comprised of a cognitive ability test, and a questionnaire. The questionnaire was comprised of existing and multiple measures of grit, interest, self-efficacy, locus of control, and conscientiousness along with a number of college success measures. Structural equation modeling was used as the primary statistical analysis technique. Factor analysis, correlation analysis, and path analysis were also used. First, the results from a series of exploratory factor analyses based on four sources of evidence revealed four different factor structures of grit: (a) two-factor structure comprised of perseverance of effort and consistency of interest, (b) three-factor structure comprised of goal attainment, focus, and perseverance, (c) four-factor structure comprised of perseverance of effort, consistency of interest, harmonious passion and obsessive passion, and (d) two-factor structure comprised of grit and passion. Second, the results based on four different path analysis models found conscientiousness to be the sole predictor of both GPA and long-term college goals. Conscientiousness was an even better predictor of college success than cognitive ability - not grit. Third, a series of correlation analyses based on different measures of grit and conscientiousness found a statistically significant strong positive relationship between grit and conscientiousness. Fourth, the resulting confirmatory factor analysis' Pearson correlation coefficients revealed a statistically significant "strong" to "very strong" positive relationship among all five latent constructs: interest, self-efficacy, locus of control, conscientiousness, and grit. Finally, results from the structural equation model found interest to be a predictor of subjective college success and conscientiousness to be the dominant predictor of both subjective college success and objective college success. Overall, the results from this study indicate that grit was not only hardly distinguishable from conscientiousness and other motivational constructs, it disappeared altogether. The dominant predictor of college success was conscientiousness. The popularity around grit may just be in its name.
