Book excerpt: "If your dream is to have better deer hunting on your property, then QDM is the answer." &break;&break;Quality deer management began in the Texas brush country, but it has quickly spread across the nation to become one of the hottest topics in the whitetail world. &break;&break;Outdoor writer and photographer Charles Alsheimer embraced the QDM concept in the 1980ss. Since then, he's experimented with his property and made it a whitetail paradise. Join Alsheimer for a class in QDM basics. You'll learn about foot plots, hunting strategies, buck age structure, nutritional requirements and proper adult-doe-to-antlered-buck ratios. &break;&break;More than 150 of Alsheimer's photographs illustrate his QDM experience. Look at the impressive deer Alsheimer killed on his farm, travel with him to commercial QDM outfitters, and learn more about the behavior of white-tailed deer through the seasons. &break;&break;Alsheimer is the first to admit there are no quick fixes for implementing a long-term QDM program. In other words, it's more than dropping a handful of clover seeds in a food plot. But if you're ready for the challenge, or just want to learn more about this popular management program, this book is for you.

But until now, there has been little comprehensive information on how to set up a property to improve the local deer herd and your overall hunting success. The expert advice inside White-tailed Deer Management and Habitat Improvement will benefit properties of all sizes--from 10 to 1,000 acres or more. Plus, the majority of this work can be done on small properties with little more than an investment of time and sweat equity. Steve Bartylla has more than 20 years of experience setting up and managing hunting properties, as well as consulting for other landowners who want to manage their lands for healthy, mature bucks. His hands-on knowledge will provide detailed instruction on how to boost your hunting success by improving the land, the quality of mature deer and your overall hunting plan. YOU'LL LEARN HOW TO: • Add and enhance food sources • Create cover • Influence deer movement • Help doe populations • Manage for older, larger bucks • Hunt more often and decrease disturbances

Winner of the Texas Chapter of The Wildlife Society Outstanding Book Award for 2011! Winner of a CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title Award for 2011! Biology and Management of White-tailed Deer organizes and presents information on the most studied large mammal species in the world. The book covers the evolutionary history of the species, its anatomy, physiology, and nutrition, population dynamics, and ecology across its vast range (from central Canada through northern South America). The book then discusses the history of management of white-tailed deer, beginning with early Native Americans and progressing through management by Europeans and examining population lows in the early 1900s, restocking efforts through the mid 1900s, and recent, overabundant populations that are becoming difficult to manage in many areas. Features: Co-published with the Quality Deer Management Association Compiles valuable information for white-tailed deer enthusiasts, managers, and biologists Written by an authoritative author team from diverse backgrounds Integrates white-tailed deer biology and management into a single volume Provides a thorough treatment of white-tailed deer antler biology Includes downloadable resources with color images The backbone of many state wildlife management agencies' policies and a featured hunting species through much of their range, white-tailed deer are an important species ecologically, socially, and scientifically in most areas of North America. Highly adaptable and now living in close proximity to humans in many areas, white-tailed deer are both the face of nature and the source of conflict with motorists, home-owners, and agricultural producers. Capturing the diverse aspects of white-tailed deer research, Biology and Management of White-tailed Deer is a reflection of the resources invested in the study of the species’ effects on ecosystems, predator-prey dynamics, population regulation, foraging behavior, and browser physiology.

This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now becoming clear that relatively few U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) waste sites will be cleaned up to the point where they can be released for unrestricted use. "Long-term stewardship" (activities to protect human health and the environment from hazards that may remain at its sites after cessation of remediation) will be required for over 100 of the 144 waste sites under DOE control (U.S. Department of Energy, 1999). After stabilizing wastes that remain on site and containing them as well as is feasible, DOE intends to rely on stewardship for as long as hazards persistâ€"in many cases, indefinitely. Physical containment barriers, the management systems upon which their long-term reliability depends, and institutional controls intended to prevent exposure of people and the environment to the remaining site hazards, will have to be maintained at some DOE sites for an indefinite period of time. The Committee on Remediation of Buried and Tank Wastes finds that much regarding DOE's intended reliance on long-term stewardship is at this point problematic. The details of long-term stewardship planning are yet to be specified, the adequacy of funding is not assured, and there is no convincing evidence that institutional controls and other stewardship measures are reliable over the long term. Scientific understanding of the factors that govern the long-term behavior of residual contaminants in the environment is not adequate. Yet, the likelihood that institutional management measures will fail at some point is relatively high, underscoring the need to assure that decisions made in the near term are based on the best available science. Improving institutional capabilities can be expected to be every bit as difficult as improving scientific and technical ones, but without improved understanding of why and how institutions succeed and fail, the follow-through necessary to assure that long-term stewardship remains effective cannot reliably be counted on to occur. Long-Term Institutional Management of U.S. Department of Energy Legacy Waste Sites examines the capabilities and limitations of the scientific, technical, and human and institutional systems that compose the measures that DOE expects to put into place at potentially hazardous, residually contaminated sites.

Book excerpt: Policymakers and program managers are continually seeking ways to improve accountability in achieving an entity's mission. A key factor in improving accountability in achieving an entity's mission is to implement an effective internal control system. An effective internal control system helps an entity adapt to shifting environments, evolving demands, changing risks, and new priorities. As programs change and entities strive to improve operational processes and implement new technology, management continually evaluates its internal control system so that it is effective and updated when necessary. Section 3512 (c) and (d) of Title 31 of the United States Code (commonly known as the Federal Managers' Financial Integrity Act (FMFIA)) requires the Comptroller General to issue standards for internal control in the federal government.

Book excerpt: The Dept. of Energy (DoE) has long suffered from contract and mgmt. oversight weaknesses. Since 1990 DOE contact mgmt. has been on a list of programs at high risk for fraud, waste, abuse, and mismanagement. In 2003 DoE¿s Office of Science (Science) unveiled its 20-year plan to acquire and upgrade potentially costly research facilities. In light of DoE¿s history and the potential cost of this ambitious plan, the author was asked to examine Science¿s project mgmt. performance. This report determined: (1) the extent to which Science has managed its projects within cost and schedule targets; (2) the factors affecting project mgmt. performance; and (3) challenges that may affect Science¿s future performance.
