Download or read book Regulating Labor written by Chris Howell and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2011-11-24 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May and June of 1968 a dramatic wave of strikes paralyzed France, making industrial relations reform a key item on the government agenda. French trade unions seemed due for a golden age of growth and importance. Today, however, trade unions are weaker in France than in any other advanced capitalist country. How did such exceptional militancy give way to equally remarkable quiescence? To answer this question, Chris Howell examines the reform projects of successive French governments toward trade unions and industrial relations during the postwar era, focusing in particular on the efforts of post-1968 conservative and socialist governments. Howell explains the genesis and fate of these reform efforts by analyzing constraints imposed on the French state by changing economic circumstances and by the organizational weakness of labor. His approach, which links economic, political, and institutional analysis, is broadly that of Regulation Theory. His explicitly comparative goal is to develop a framework for understanding the challenges facing labor movements throughout the advanced capitalist world in light of the exhaustion of the postwar pattern of economic growth, the weakening of the nation-state as an economic actor, and accelerating economic integration, particularly in Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. In a world where technologies are constantly evolving, it is a real challenge for archivists, librarians, museum curators and information professionals to keep track of and record living theatre. Audiovisual recording techniques are now cheap and accessible to many; electronic storage and dissemination of information and images has radically altered the relationship between the managers of collections and their potential users; new techniques have introduced new possibilities for interactivity in exhibitions and displays. These are just some of the issues addressed by the SIBMAS (International Association of Libraries and Museum of the Performing Arts) during its 25thAnnual Conference, held in Barcelona in 2004.

Book excerpt: In this important and timely book, researchers from different countries compare their experiences and offer contrasting views on the future of social protection. They consider the theoretical aspects of the intergenerational debate, relations between generations within the family, the living standards of elderly people, and the question of social time. For the first time in history, three and sometimes four generations are living at the same time; this book examines the new interactions between family change, labour force participation and population ageing.

Book Synopsis Collaborating for Change by : Susan Marine
Download or read book Collaborating for Change written by Susan Marine and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the midst of unprecedented attention to gender based violence (GBV) globally, prompted in part by the #MeToo movement, this book provides a new analysis of how higher education cultures can be transformed. It offers reflections from faculty, staff and students about how change has happened and could happen on their campuses in ways that go beyond implementation of programmes and policies. Building on what is already known from decades of scholarship and practice in the US, and more recent attention elsewhere, this book provides an inter-disciplinary, international overview of attempts to transform higher education cultures in order to eradicate GBV.. Change happens because people act, usually with others. At the heart of transformative efforts lie collaborations between faculty, staff, students, activists and community organisations. The contributors to the book reflect on what makes for constructive, effective collaborations and how to avoid the common mistakes in working with others to end GBV. They consider what has worked to challenge the reluctance-or outright hostility-they have encountered in their work against GBV and how their collaborations have succeeded in transforming the ways we think about GV and what we do about it.Chapters focus on experiences in Canada, the US, England, Scotland, France and India to examine different approaches to tackling GBV in higher education. They reveal the cultural variations in which GBV occurs as well as the similarities across cultures-that GBV Is committed overwhelmingly by men against women and reflects a determination to assert masculine power. Together, they demonstrate that, to make higher education a safe environment for all, nothing short of a transformation is required"--
