Book excerpt: Laws and norms that focus on women's lives in conflict have proliferated across the regimes of international humanitarian law, international criminal law, international human rights law and the United Nations Security Council. While separate institutions, with differing powers of monitoring and enforcement, implement these laws and norms, the activities of regimes overlap. Women's Rights in Armed Conflict under International Law is the first book to account for this pluralism and institutional diversity. This book identifies key aspects of how different regimes regulate women's rights in conflict, and how they interact. Using country case studies to reveal the practical implications of the fragmented protection of women's rights in conflict, this book offers a dynamic account of how regimes and institutions interact, the extent to which they reinforce each other, and the tensions and gaps in regulation that emerge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year, hundreds of thousands of women become victims of sexual violence in conflict zones around the world; in the Democratic Republic of Congo alone, approximately 1,100 rapes are reported each month. This book offers a comprehensive analysis of the causes, consequences and responses to sexual violence in contemporary armed conflict. It explores the function and effect of wartime sexual violence and examines the conditions that make women and girls most vulnerable to these acts both before, during and after conflict. To understand the motivations of the men (and occasionally women) who perpetrate this violence, the book analyzes the role played by systemic and situational factors such as patriarchy and militarized masculinity. Difficult questions of accountability are tackled; in particular, the case of child soldiers, who often suffer a double victimization when forced to commit sexual atrocities. The book concludes by looking at strategies of prevention and protection as well as new programs being set up on the ground to support the rehabilitation of survivors and their communities. Sexual violence in war has long been a taboo subject but, as this book shows, new and courageous steps are at last being taken Ð at both local and international level - to end what has been called the “greatest silence in history”.

Book excerpt: "A Thematic Guide to Documents on the Human Rights of Women" is the first volume in a new series: "The Raoul Wallenberg Institute Human" "Rights Guides," As the term guide' implies, the series will facilitate orientation in international human rights standards by presenting the content of substantive standards in a systematic way. The Guides map out the entire range of human rights and fundamental freedoms as they relate to specific categories of beneficiaries. Future volumes will be devoted to children, minorities, indigenous peoples, detainees, migrants, and so on. Volumes are also planned to deal with health, information, and humanitarian relief, in which the category of beneficiary is open ended. In all such areas, those who are professionally involved in human rights activities need guidance to substantive standards, which are neither widely known nor readily accessible. This first volume establishes the structure to be followed by future Guides. Part 1 groups the relevant provisions from different instruments according to specific rights and freedoms. Part 2 supplies a chronological list of all the instruments that have been excerpted in Part 1, enabling the user to locate the entire document if wished. Part 3 contains an extensive index of all relevant provisions.

Book excerpt: This report, which comprises three booklets, provides a comprehensive analysis of the crime of trafficking in persons and how different countries are responding to this crisis. Countries worldwide have been detecting and reporting a larger number of victims and are also convicting more traffickers than ever before. This may well be the result of an increase in the capacity to identify victims over the last few years. While the number of reporting countries did not significantly increase, the number of victims reported in different countries did increase. The trend has unfortunately been growing over the past few years.
