This doctrine, to say the least, is one of the great central points, from which the various different and conflict ing systems Of theological, mental, and moral science, take their departure. TO determine a man's senti ments in respect to the Will, is to determine his position, in most important respects, as a theologian. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hegel's Doctrine of the Will It is this conception of development that has caused the history of philosophy to be regarded as a part of philosophy itself. A more sympathetic appreciation is gradually com ing to see in the different systems which history presents, the progressive efl'ort on the part of the human spirit to reach a more adequate conception of the world as rational. An earnest study of these systems but strengthens our faith in the spiritual nature and ultimate destiny of man. The refutation of a system, says Hegel, only means that its limits are passed, and that the fixed principle in it has been reduced to an organic element in the completer system that follows. Thus, the history of philosophy in its true mean ing deals not with the past, but with the eternal and veritable present: and in its results resembles not a museum of the aberrations of the human intellect, but a pantheon of God like figures representing various stages of the immanent logic of all human thought. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Distinctions and Anomalies, Arising Out of the Equitable Doctrine of the Legal Estate The endeavour at the same time made to deal with the matter upon principle, and more especially to find an intel ligible basis for the doctrines of the priority of the legal estate and tacking, may also be of some practical utility. The ascertainment of principles is of importance as well to the study of the law, as to its successful amendment1 and judicial development. If the explanation of tacking here advanced be the true one, it will appear that there has been in recent times a tendency of the courts to extend in more than one direction that justly reprobated doctrine, which, however, ao cording to the accepted judicial axiom is to be applied only within the bare limits of the old authorities which established it. But if the theories put forward should prove upon further investigation not to be sustainable, they may perhaps claim the merit appertaining to hypotheses in general, that they are necessary steps to something more certain. Perhaps too the statement as a whole of equitable doctrine concerning the legal estate as it now stands - its intricacy, its fortuitous results, its occasional injustice, its technicality and immaturities - may help to make more clear the urgency of the case for the legislative reform of English property law. Gordon, in manuscript. He urged its immediate publication, and consented to write an introduction to its pages. Before the closing chapters were completed he had passed away from his useful life. On this account his name has no connection with the book, further than this grateful acknowledgment of his encouraging words. The learned Dr. Harnack, in his History of Dogma, when speaking of the Christian's faith in God as the father of Jesus Christ, makes the following comprehensive statement So far as this God is believed to be the omnipotent Lord of heaven and earth, the Christian religion includes a knowledge of God, of the world, and of the purpose of created things. These three spheres, then, are the proper objects of our contemplation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Perfect Life: In Experience and Doctrine, a Restatement It is good to see that the time has once more come round when the world of authors and of readers are interested in the persons who have had adventures with God. So far as Tolstoy, and William James, and Harold Begbie may have contributed to bring about the new relish, we will remember them with gratitude; so far as they have failed to exhaust the ideals and the fascinations of the highest Christian living, we will feel free, and even called upon, to continue our study of experience, and will continue to educe therefrom doctrine as sound and vital as we may be able. Meantime, in the present state of the public mind, a new work on "The Perfect Life in Experience and Doctrine" ought to be sure of a wide and warm welcome, not only in circles specifically religious, but also among all persons who approach the theme from the side of psychology, or of education, or of art, or of ethics, or of any other human interest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Doctrine and Duty Made Plain and Attractive Our fathers made much of sound doctrine, emphasizing its importance on all occasions. The modern tendency is to steer shy of it. In fact, there is a growing aversion to doctrine, which is alarming If we are to believe the Scripture, sound doc trine is of the greatest importance to happiness in this life and that which is to come. Saint Paul says: All Scripture is given by the inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine (2 Tim. 3. Also he said to Timothy, Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine, continue in them; for in doing this thou shalt save both thy self and them that hear thee (1 Tim. 4. From these quotations, it is evident that doctrine is not only profitable, but upon it rests the salva tion of men. Yet some people say: It is a matter of little consequence what we believe, just so we live right; persons can believe any thing, or nothing, but if they keep a good con science they will be saved. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of God Christianity is a doctrine Of God and a life in God. It is scarcely more; for its great peculiarity is its proclamation Of a work of gracious help from God to man, performed because God is what he is, and all its substance beyond this consists in the unfolding Of what it means, in experience and thought, that God is such a Being as Jesus Christ makes known. Christianity is religion with such a God, and Christian theology is the doctrine of such a God, and of that which follows from his being. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Man It is hardly necessary to remind the reader that almost every section and subsection of this book touches con troversial points, and that no two writers will agree on every detail of such a subject as this. I have spared no pains to secure accuracy of fact, but am very conscious, in other respects, of the limitations of this volume; some of these are due to the necessary limits of space, though far more to the demands the subject makes on both theological learning and Christian experience. The writer will be thankful for any friendly criticisms. He can hardly expect to avoid all mistakes, and his work will, no doubt, have many imperfections. It is his desire to conform, in all respects, to the Catholic Faith - that Faith which was once for all delivered to the saints, and which is taught in the Holy Scriptures, summed up in the Creeds, and affirmed by the undisputed General Councils By that standard he.would have his statements criticised and, when necessary, corrected.
