Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive history of the Wesleyan movement in the United States. An expansive, substantive history of the Wesleyan tradition in the United States, Doctrine, Spirit, and Discipline offers a broad survey of the Methodist movement as it developed and spread throughout America, from the colonial era to the present day. It also provides an theological appraisal of these developments in light of John Wesley's foundational vision. Beginning with Wesley himself, Watson describes the distinctiveness of the tradition at the outset. Then, as history unfolds, he identifies the common set of beliefs and practices which have unified a diverse group of people across the centuries, providing them a common identity through a number of divisions and mergers. In the midst of the sweeping changes happening in Methodism and the pan-Wesleyan movement today, Watson shows that the heart of the Wesleyan theological tradition is both more expansive and substantive than any singular denominational identity. "A fresh, panoramic overview of the history of the Methodist movement. . . Promises to be a standard textbook on the history of Methodism for years to come." —TIMOTHY C. TENNENT, Asbury Theological Seminary

His sphere of action is the broadest; his influence the widest and to him is given Nature and Life for his heritage and his possession. He holds dominion over the Outward. He is the rightful Sove reign of the Earth, fitted to subdue all things to him selfi'and to know of no superior, save God. And yet he enters upon the scene of his labors, a feeble and wailing Babe, at first unconscious of the place as signed him, and needs years of tutelage and discipline to fit him for the high and austere duties that await him. Book Synopsis Teaching with Authority by : Jimmy Akin
Download or read book Teaching with Authority written by Jimmy Akin and published by Catholic Answers Press. This book was released on 2018-10-15 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique, valuable, and long-overdue resource for all Catholics as well as those inquiring about the Faith, Teaching with Authority will help deepen your understanding of what the Church teaches by showing you (maybe for the first time) how and why and where it does. Not another catechism or "Catholicism for beginners" book, Teaching with Authority isn't about understanding specific teachings of the Faith (even the complicated and misunderstood ones) but rather about understanding Catholic teaching itself. Where does the Church's teaching authority come from? How do we weigh dogmas versus practices, doctrines versus disciplines, conciliar declarations versus papal interviews? How do we sort through the many kinds of ecclesial documents and determine their relative authority and relevance? And, in an age when accusations of heresy fly regularly across social media, Jimmy also tackles the issues of incredulity, apostasy, and schism-showing you how to recognize different forms of dissent

Book Synopsis The Doctrine of Endless Punishment by : William Greenough Thayer Shedd
Download or read book The Doctrine of Endless Punishment written by William Greenough Thayer Shedd and published by . This book was released on 1886 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the request of the editor of the North American Review, the author of this book prepared an argument in defense of the doctrine of Endless Punishment, which was published in the number of that periodical for February, 1885. It was agreed that the writer should have the right to republish it at a future time. Only the rational argument was presented in the article. The author now reproduces it, adding the biblical argument, and a brief historical sketch. Every doctrine has its day to be attacked, and defended. Just now, that of Eternal Retribution is strenuously combated, not only outside of the church, but to some extent within it. Whoever preaches it is said, by some, not "to preach to the times"--As if the sin of this time were privileged, and stood in a different relation to the law and judgment of God, from that of other times. Neither the Christian ministry, nor the Christian church, are responsible for the doctrine of Eternal Perdition. It is given in charge to the ministry, and to the church, by the Lord Christ himself, in his last commission, as a truth to be preached to every creature. Speaking generally, those who believe that there is a hell, and intelligently fear it, as they are commanded to do by Christ himself, will escape it; and those who deny that there is a hell, and ridicule it, will fall into it. Hence the minister of Christ must be as plain as Christ, as solemn as Christ, and as tender as Christ, in the announcement of this fearful truth. - Preface
