Book excerpt: For the past 40 years, American college and university administrators have registered record low retention and high attrition rates. Education experts and researchers have claimed the problems are embarrassing to the United States’ higher education institutions. Based on the problems, graduate school administrators are unable to graduate doctoral students at U.S. population growth rates. Currently, only 1% of Americans hold PhD degrees. Compared to other industrialized countries such as Japan, China, and Mexico, the rate is insignificant. The purpose of the mixed methods case study was to investigate if there was a relationship between motivation and retention rates at the doctoral level. The goal of the study was to determine if extrinsic and intrinsic motivational factors and constraints were associated with persistence in a graduate doctoral program. Data were collected from 193 doctoral and graduate students for the quantitative study, while 20 doctoral and graduate students participated in a qualitative study followed by a thorough semi-structured interview. Inductive and deductive analyses were performed, transcribed, and opened, while axial coding provided emergent themes and sub-themes. The research showed a direct relationship between financial implications, attrition and retention rates, and motivation in doctoral level students. Many doctoral students believed the primary reason they were unable to pursue doctoral programs was based on financial hardship. Doctoral students who responded to the survey added that motivation was the second significant variable that helped them continue their studies.

Regardless of their background, color, race, creeds, ethnicity, physical impairment, religion, sex, gender, class, neighborhoods, parents' affiliation, political party, and anything else, a child deserved to be taught and deserved respect. Every mind is important (.i.e., Helen Keller). A community that is nurtured by its educators sends signals of a healthy environment. In order for any community to cure its problem education should be the highest priority. Education can change the way people conducted old business. Education can change the world; a community that embraces education is subject to be a better place. To become a better place the community should work together with all stakeholders then create avenues for better learning. There are many challenges that are waiting for the learners ahead. However, life itself is a great challenge, the mission of any institution is to hand all of its students tool to compete and have the students ready to enter a better future. Challenge can come on all forms for example, challenge to study and complete a program. Students face challenges to know technology and compete with the world economy. Without a well rounded, highly qualified, devoted teachers and faculty members, schools would not be able to meet its tasks to educate its population. The main role of a school is to provide quality education to its patrons. Schools and education are connected to enhance human knowledge and possible prepare humans for a better Planet. I believe if the head can help the lower part of a body in the end it whole. I believe I have the highest potential to handle the necessary needs that I can manage as director to help growth. A community cannot exist unless there is effective leadership. Leaders can make a difference in each endeavor that is being undertaken. Environment can be anything from classrooms to the inside campus, the streets, online and far away to the community. Finally, every student can learn when student is given an opportunity to grasp knowledge.

Such outcomes are inconsistent with the rigorous evaluation that occurs prior to being accepted into a doctoral program (Bair & Haworth, 2005). Despite deemed levels of student excellence, promise and efforts made by programs to counter student departure (Offerman, 2011), attrition rates remain alarmingly high (Bair & Haworth, 2005; Gardner, 2009). The purpose of this book is to provide a view into doctoral student work-lives and their efforts to find a balance between often seemingly conflicting responsibilities. In addition to contributing to the ongoing dialogue on work-life balance in doctoral studies (Brus, 2006; Golde, 1998; Moyer, Salovey, & Casey-Cannon, 1999), the intention of this book is to provide other doctoral students with potential coping mechanisms, guidance, and assurance that they are not alone in this process. Lastly, we anticipate that these doctoral student narratives will help illuminate potential strategies that doctoral programs, departments, and institutions can incorporate in their efforts to help students successfully complete their program of study. Book excerpt: This is a study examining the interaction between certain doctoral student engagement indicators (peer, institution, curriculum, faculty, spirituality) and student satisfaction. The scope is to understand if student sense of community is a significant moderator to this interaction in order to address the issue of student attrition. It is important to understand these interactions and the influence of sense of community so that institutions of higher education better analyze student commitment. The outcomes of this study may be used as a means to design and implement engagement strategies that are effective in student retention and completion. Doctoral students were invited through email to participate in a Likert survey comprised of multiple scales measuring the key engagement indicators along with sense of community and student satisfaction. The quantitative results show that engagement is a predictor of satisfaction and, in some cases, is significantly moderated by sense of community. This study supports contemporary research conclusions suggesting that both student engagement and academic communities are paramount to student satisfaction which will ultimately lead to higher rates of retention. Recommendations for future research include determining how online students will be better served through engaging academic communities and strategies designed to enhance the engagement experiences.

Book excerpt: Approximately 50% of doctoral students in social science, humanities, and educational doctoral programs fail to earn the Ph.D. This number is 10% to 15% higher for students enrolled in online or limited-residency programs. Using in-depth interviewing and qualitative data analysis techniques, this study examined participants' recollections of their experience as students in a limited-residency doctoral program and their reasons for withdrawal. The study addresses the following question "What is the nature of the participants' experiences of doctoral attrition in a limited-residency doctoral program?". The use of a grounded theory analysis helped identify obstacles that ultimately cause students to withdraw from limited-residency programs. The elucidation of these barriers led to the development of a theoretical model comprised of three components; each clarified relationships between attrition and a support issue (i.e., advisor support, dissertation support and program support). These components were then combined into a single theoretical model that identified the nature of participants' experience of attrition. The theoretical model helps identify steps faculty and administration could take in order to reduce attrition. The study's findings are presented in a discussion of themes found throughout the participant's narratives. Recommendations for effective doctoral education practices from existing literature are supported in the findings of this study. The limited-residency doctoral program may consider offering several forms of support to improve doctoral retention. Additionally, the program should give close attention to the relationship between the advisor and the student. Recommendations were made regarding significant program factors, accountability measures for dissertation committees and chairperson, improved monitoring of attrition, and improving the overall communication with the dissertation students. The concluding chapter includes implications of the findings and recommendations for further research regarding doctoral student attrition.

Book excerpt: Despite the existence of an established and growing body of literature examining the causes of and the possible cures for doctoral attrition, a remarkably small amount of attention has been paid to faculty beliefs and attitudes regarding this phenomenon. Comprehensive survey data regarding the content and nature of these beliefs do not exist, and questions regarding the origins of these beliefs have neither been asked nor answered. This study documents faculty beliefs regarding student attrition from doctoral programs in a systematic and quantitative fashion, and situates these beliefs within a heuristics and biases approach in order to explore certain aspects of this belief structure (Gilovich, Griffin, & Kahneman, 2002; Tversky & Kahneman, 1974). This study was conducted at two separate research universities with high research activity located on the East Coast of the United States. All full-time faculty members directly involved in teaching and advising doctoral students were invited to complete the researcher designed Doctoral Attrition Survey and 233 responded (20.67%). Quantitative data analysis of survey results included descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, t-tests, repeated measures analysis of variance, the Bayesian parameter estimation test (Kruschke, 2013), maximum likelihood factor analysis, and principal axis factor analysis. A number of conclusions can be drawn from the findings of this study. First, this study establishes that faculty members systematically underestimate the amount of attrition which occurs in doctoral program in general as well as the amount which occurs within their own 0́3programs. Faculty who participated in this study estimated an overall doctoral attrition rate of 24% when the true rate has been established at 43% (Council of Graduate Schools, 2008). Faculty similarly underestimate the rate of doctoral attrition within their own programs. Second, this study suggests that faculty perceptions of the amount of attrition which occurs and the timing of that attrition may be influenced by the availability heuristic. With one exception, faculty members estimated significantly higher levels of attrition for phases of study where they spent more time with doctoral students, and significantly lower levels of attrition for phases of study where they spent less time with doctoral students. Third, this study indicates that faculty members use the representativeness heuristic when assessing the chances that individual students will complete a course of doctoral study. Fourth, this study establishes that while faculty understandings of the parameters of doctoral attrition are influenced by cognitive heuristics, faculty conceptualize the underlying causes and factors which influence attrition in a manner consistent with both the theory and the literature on the topic. Finally, this study extends the generalizability of the heuristics and biases approach in general and the representativeness heuristic in particular to a highly educated segment of society: university professors.

Book excerpt: To advance our understanding of doctoral student experiences and the high attrition rates among STEM doctoral students, we examined the psychological profiles of different types of doctoral students and conducted a preliminary examination of the effects of two social psychological interventions. We used latent class analysis (LCA) on self-reported psychological threat data from 1081 incoming doctoral students across three universities and found that the best-fitting model delineated four threat profiles: Engaged and Confident, Relaxed and Nonchalant, Engaged but Worried, and Disengaged and Worried. These profiles predicted outcomes measured at the beginning and end of students' first semester of graduate school that may influence attrition risk, including differences in academic preparation (e.g., prior attainment of a master's degree), self-evaluations (e.g., academic self-control), attitudes towards graduate school and academia (e.g., burnout), and interpersonal relations and perceived fit (e.g., sense of belonging). The demographic distributions of profiles also differed, with groups more likely to face social identity threat (e.g., women) being overrepresented in higher threat profiles (i.e., Engaged but Worried and Disengaged and Worried students) and underrepresented in lower threat profiles (i.e., Engaged and Confident and Relaxed and Nonchalant students). Moreover, students completed randomly assigned belonging intervention, affirmation intervention, or control writing exercises early in their first semester and we preliminarily examined effects of each intervention by threat profile on outcomes at the end of the first semester. We did not find robust evidence for intervention efficacy overall or difference in efficacy by class. We conclude that LCA may be useful to identify students at high risk of negative outcomes and that future work should further investigate the appropriateness of tailoring interventions by student threat profile to ultimately promote retention.
