Book excerpt: Concern. Compassion. Doubt. Despair. Anger. Hope. Imagine juggling these feelings every day in a situation where your ability to manage them could be the difference between life and death. For Dr Chris Luke, a consultant in emergency medicine, these experiences are an intrinsic part of the job - ranging from rage at a system that often leaves vulnerable people waiting anxiously, to the incomparable satisfaction of relieving patients' suffering and distress and making a real difference in people's lives and in society. Here, Dr Luke reveals his own rollercoaster journey from orphanage boy to one of the leading emergency physicians in the country. Luke's recollections and reflections on a life spent on the frontline - grappling with his own health issues, burnout and sometimes despair at a dysfunctional system - make for compelling reading. A Life in Trauma is a frank, remarkable account of a career spent helping others, sometimes at a painful personal cost, and ultimately offers a positive outlook on the potential of Ireland's healthcare system in the future.
Book Synopsis Readmission Prevention by : Josh Luke
Download or read book Readmission Prevention written by Josh Luke and published by ACHE Management. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a result of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), readmissions have become a new area of focus as care delivery moves from a volume-based model to a value-based one. Acute hospitals are calling upon post-acute providers to assist them in improving care coordination to avoid penalties. Post-acute providers are taking steps to become the provider of choice as hospitals, health systems, and managed care organizations turn to them for support. In the absence of proven historical programs, this book gives hospital executives and post-acute care providers proven tactics and tools they can apply to reduce and prevent unnecessary hospitalizations. Written in a conversational style by a seasoned healthcare executive, the book starts by defining the origins of readmissions and the impact of the ACA, then describes three phases of readmission prevention planning and offers innovative strategies for executives to position their facility as a provider of choice. Specific readmission prevention tactics are addressed for different levels of post-acute care, including: Acute care hospitals and health systems Skilled nursing facilities Physicians and Pharmacists Long-term acute care and acute rehabilitation hospitals Home health agencies Hospice and palliative care agencies Assisted-living facilities Home care and private-duty nursing Throughout the book, short perspectives written by experts in the different specialty areas provide additional viewpoints on critical issues in care transitions. The book concludes with case examples from healthcare organizations that have successfully implemented new tactics and strategies as part of a larger coordinated program in preventing readmissions.
Book Synopsis According to Luke by : David Gooding
Download or read book According to Luke written by David Gooding and published by Myrtlefield House. This book was released on with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a profound understanding of both the Scriptures and the classical world that influenced Luke, this exposition leads us through the artistry of Luke’s presentation. However familiar the terrain of this Gospel, we will find that having an experienced guide makes a difference. By bringing out the significance of the narrative as a whole, David Gooding’s analysis will help us to arrive at a confident understanding of Luke’s message and open up insightful lines of application at each step along they way. Right from the start of his Gospel Luke makes it clear that the story of Jesus is neither ancient myth nor contemporary fable. It is straightforward history. To emphasize this he provides us with historical co–ordinates. He informs us, for example, that when John began publicly to introduce Christ to His nation it was in the fifteenth year of Emperor Tiberius’ reign, while Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea, during the high–priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas. This is, then, an historical account. But what does Luke’s history of Jesus mean? And how can we be certain that we have understood the message that he has presented in his account of Christ’s life? David Gooding asks us to begin by recalling that Luke is an ancient and not a modern historian. A modern historian might compile a list of the things that Jesus did and taught, and then add his own explanations. But Luke has more in common with ancient historians such as Thucydides and writers of Old Testament books such as Judges and 1 and 2 Samuel. With minimal comment, he has grouped the material about Christ in a way that leads thoughtful readers to discover for themselves the point and purpose of each incident. Luke is, then, both historian and artist. It has often been lamented that Christ’s public ministry on earth was so short–lived, and His death at the hands of His enemies a tragedy. But Luke will not have it so. Following Christ’s own statements, he divides his Gospel into two parts: the coming of Christ from Glory into our world, and His going back to Glory. David Gooding shows that by arranging the events of each part into discreet stages and movements, Luke is proclaiming that Christ was carrying out a definite mission – His going, by way of His cross, resurrection and ascension was as deliberate as His coming.

Book Synopsis Thirty Rooms to Hide in by : Luke Sullivan
Download or read book Thirty Rooms to Hide in written by Luke Sullivan and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Luke Longstreet Sullivan has a simple way of describing his new memoir: “It's like The Shining . . . only funnier.” And as this astonishing account reveals, the comment is accurate. Thirty Rooms to Hide In tells the story of Sullivan's father and his descent from being one of the world's top orthopedic surgeons at the Mayo Clinic to a man who is increasingly abusive, alcoholic, and insane, ultimately dying alone on the floor of a Georgia motel. For his wife and six sons, the years prior to his death were years of turmoil, anger, and family dysfunction; but somehow, they were also a time of real happiness for Sullivan and his five brothers, full of dark humor and much laughter. Through the 1950s and 1960s, the six brothers had a wildly fun and thoroughly dysfunctional childhood living in a forbidding thirty-room mansion, known as the Millstone, on the outskirts of Rochester, Minnesota. The many rooms of the immense home, as well as their mother's loving protection, allowed the Sullivan brothers to grow up as normal, mischievous boys. Against a backdrop of the times—the Cold War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, fallout shelters, JFK's assassination, and the Beatles—the cracks in their home life and their father's psyche continue to widen. When their mother decides to leave the Millstone and move the family across town, the Sullivan boys are able to find solace in each other and in rock 'n' roll. As Thirty Rooms to Hide In follows the story of the Sullivan family—at times grim, at others poignant—there is a wonderful, dark humor that lifts the narrative. Tragic, funny, and powerfully evocative of the 1950s and 1960s, Thirty Rooms to Hide In is a tale of public success and private dysfunction, personal and familial resilience, and the strange power of humor to give refuge when it is needed most, even if it can't always provide the answers.
