Book excerpt: Today St. Luke is known as the author of the third Gospel of the New Testament, but two thousand years ago he was Lucanus, a Greek, a man who loved, knew the emptiness of bereavement, and later traveled through the hills and wastes of Judea asking, "What manner of man was my Lord?" And it is of this Lucanus that Taylor Caldwell tells here in one of the most stirring stories ever lived or written.

Book excerpt: Concern. Compassion. Doubt. Despair. Anger. Hope. Imagine juggling these feelings every day in a situation where your ability to manage them could be the difference between life and death. For Dr Chris Luke, a consultant in emergency medicine, these experiences are an intrinsic part of the job - ranging from rage at a system that often leaves vulnerable people waiting anxiously, to the incomparable satisfaction of relieving patients' suffering and distress and making a real difference in people's lives and in society. Here, Dr Luke reveals his own rollercoaster journey from orphanage boy to one of the leading emergency physicians in the country. Luke's recollections and reflections on a life spent on the frontline - grappling with his own health issues, burnout and sometimes despair at a dysfunctional system - make for compelling reading. A Life in Trauma is a frank, remarkable account of a career spent helping others, sometimes at a painful personal cost, and ultimately offers a positive outlook on the potential of Ireland's healthcare system in the future.

Book excerpt: With a profound understanding of both the Scriptures and the classical world that influenced Luke, this exposition leads us through the artistry of Luke’s presentation. However familiar the terrain of this Gospel, we will find that having an experienced guide makes a difference. By bringing out the significance of the narrative as a whole, David Gooding’s analysis will help us to arrive at a confident understanding of Luke’s message and open up insightful lines of application at each step along they way. Right from the start of his Gospel Luke makes it clear that the story of Jesus is neither ancient myth nor contemporary fable. It is straightforward history. To emphasize this he provides us with historical co–ordinates. He informs us, for example, that when John began publicly to introduce Christ to His nation it was in the fifteenth year of Emperor Tiberius’ reign, while Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea, during the high–priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas. This is, then, an historical account. But what does Luke’s history of Jesus mean? And how can we be certain that we have understood the message that he has presented in his account of Christ’s life? David Gooding asks us to begin by recalling that Luke is an ancient and not a modern historian. A modern historian might compile a list of the things that Jesus did and taught, and then add his own explanations. But Luke has more in common with ancient historians such as Thucydides and writers of Old Testament books such as Judges and 1 and 2 Samuel. With minimal comment, he has grouped the material about Christ in a way that leads thoughtful readers to discover for themselves the point and purpose of each incident. Luke is, then, both historian and artist. It has often been lamented that Christ’s public ministry on earth was so short–lived, and His death at the hands of His enemies a tragedy. But Luke will not have it so. Following Christ’s own statements, he divides his Gospel into two parts: the coming of Christ from Glory into our world, and His going back to Glory. David Gooding shows that by arranging the events of each part into discreet stages and movements, Luke is proclaiming that Christ was carrying out a definite mission – His going, by way of His cross, resurrection and ascension was as deliberate as His coming.

Book excerpt: Most of us know Luke as just the writer of one of the gospels. We tend to forget he was the first Christian physician and a historian par excellence. In Doctor Luke, author R. J. Cranston starts with a short, biographical sketch of Luke, the physician-writer of the gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. These books, written by Luke and inspired by God, are excellent examples of literature. Within these books are many medical miracles, including selected healings by the Great Physician, Jesus Christ. Cranston helps you to understand the significance of those healings and why they were important to God's ministry. Doctor Luke provides a medically focused look at Luke's books. Your understanding of the Bible and of the books of Luke and Acts will be enhanced through the work of R. J. Cranston.

Book excerpt: A Change of Heart By: M.M. Angelo Cecil R. Durden, a North Carolina entrepreneur contacted M.M. Angelo to share a deeply emotional and recurring dream he had for years. The plot revealed itself on a cold, rainy Valentine’s Day weekend in 2018. His hope is to share it with our racially tense nation in the anticipation of helping others in similar situations, thus, the author created “A Change of Heart”. This literary narrative takes place in a sleepy little North Carolina town set back in the 80’s. This sobering journey reveals a life-altering tribulation between a black family and a white family, unbeknownst to one another as the go about their modest, daily lives. Each of which have unpretentiously raised their one-and-only loving sons. The middle-aged father figures are extraordinarily steeped in unabated prejudicim, from our American post-segregation era, however, the other family members do not hold the same credence. With an immense amount of conflict, illness and tragedy, yet from a series of profound and sobering unfortunate events, the patriarchs are inadvertently trusted to rise up out of their divergent state. But do they?

This was Mary's life. Very little is known of these early years, but Mary must have celebrated milestones just as we do today. Jesus had a first tooth, a first word, a first step, a first day of school, siblings, graduations, and other milestones like our children today. The only witness to all these events was Mary. Learn of Jesus' relationship with his brothers and sisters and many cousins, including John the Baptist and Matthew. In Jesus, My Son, you will watch Jesus' life unfold through the eyes of his mother.
