Book excerpt: It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of facial hair must be in want of a shave. And tidying. And a fake date. My name is Holly Hyman. I love order and prime numbers—and I’m in trouble. The company I work for is pivoting, and not in a way I like. Our new management? Alex Chortsky, a gorgeous, scruffy Russian devil. Our new direction? VR entertainment of the spicy kind. Maybe I wouldn’t mind it so much if my life’s work wasn’t meant for children. Or if I hadn’t accidentally hooked up with a VR version of my wickedly handsome boss. The only way to save my dream project is to make a Faustian bargain. For one night, I pretend to be Alex Chortsky’s girlfriend. What could possibly go wrong? NOTE: This is a standalone, raunchy, slow-burn romantic comedy featuring a quirky, nerdy Anglophile heroine, a scorching hot Russian hero, and an unruly, oversized puppy. If any of the above is not your cup of tea, run away now. Otherwise, buckle in for a laugh-out-loud, feel-good ride.

Book excerpt: Imagine a president embroiled in scandal, an opposition party frothing at the mouth with his impending resignation or conviction, and the only thing standing between the other guys and the White House is the vice-president. Now imagine the remnants of a war thought long over that has at least one more battle to be waged. That is the premise of Taken Identity, the story of life-long friends trying to right a wrong, and prevent a disaster. From Washington to Maine to Europe and beyond, Taken Identity follows the course of events that puts the president in a precarious position and his most trusted advisors in the role of human shield. The relationships within the circle of friends, at times, are forced to withstand the most brutal of beatings. From high-tech to old fashioned footwork and know-how, Taken Identity introduces you to a by-the-people, for-the-people White House and an extended circle of aides who strive, like all of us, to adhere to the letter of the law, but sometimes are forced to bend it. Its easy to do the right thing, but much harder to do the wrong things for the right reasons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third James Maxted thriller from the internationally bestselling author, “a master of the sly double- and triple-cross” (The Seattle Times). The Treaty of Versailles has finally been signed, officially ending the World War I peace negotiations, and the action shifts east, to Tokyo, where a team assembled at Max’s behest anxiously awaits his arrival on the docks. The dashing Royal Flying Corps veteran turned secret service operative had arrived in Paris soon after the end of the Great War to investigate the suspicious death of his father, a British diplomat named Sir Henry, and soon plunged into a treacherous game of cat-and-mouse with the people behind his father’s death: German spymaster Fritz Lemmer and the dark horse of the Japanese diplomatic contingent, Count Tomura. It is in Japan—where Sir Henry worked as a young government agent—that Max hopes to finally uncover the whole truth behind his father’s murder and take down Lemmer’s spy network once and for all. But what Max’s cohort doesn’t know is that his own storyline seems to have come to an end in a villa outside Marseilles. Stuck in limbo, the team decides to pursue their only lead—right into Lemmer’s den. Loaded with death threats, knife fights, a kidnapping or two, and a coded list that has the power to dismantle whole governmental hierarchies, The Ends of the Earth is a masterful work of historical cut-and-thrust that tests the bonds of family and country to their very limit. “Thrilling . . . The third and most satisfying entry in an excellent series of old-school spy thrillers.” —Kirkus Reviews

Book excerpt: The Good Spy Wife is a story of aging FBI agent, Gunter Martini, as told by his wife, Bootsie. The saga begins with her suspicions that the next-door neighbor, Alexander, is a Russian agent. The reader is drawn into the drama as the story explodes along with the cigarette boat when Gunter dares to venture out for a boat ride to Bomb Island on the 50,000 acres Lake Murray on the night of a impending hurricane. His drowning is dubious, as no body floats to the surface. The wife trusts in God and believes that he is alive. When he reappears later in the Soviet Union he invites his wife to join him as he works toward an assignment involving the elimination of the American president, as the Soviet country believes the President of the United States and his democratic ideals stand in the way of progress for the Soviet Union. He must die, as the current leadership in America is an affront for growth of the new Russia. Set during the Cold War in the late 1980s, Bootsie and Gunter struggle with separation during difficult times in their own marriage. Bootsie grows spiritually through the unexplained meeting of strangers who appear to her as angels, and through drawing on her own strengths when alone. Ultimately, after many twists and turns of the story, the couple realizes that God is the only help for the frailty of their lives, and each makes plans to rebuild his or her life around their new beliefs. However, will this turn out to be the happy conclusion? One can only discover this knowledge through reading the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 12-WEEK NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER "Helen Rappaport paints a compelling portrait of the doomed grand duchesses." —People magazine "The public spoke of the sisters in a gentile, superficial manner, but Rappaport captures sections of letters and diary entries to showcase the sisters' thoughtfulness and intelligence." —Publishers Weekly (starred review) From the New York Times bestselling author of The Last Days of the Romanovs and Caught in the Revolution, The Romanov Sisters reveals the untold stories of the four daughters of Nicholas and Alexandra. They were the Princess Dianas of their day—perhaps the most photographed and talked about young royals of the early twentieth century. The four captivating Russian Grand Duchesses—Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Anastasia Romanov—were much admired for their happy dispositions, their looks, the clothes they wore and their privileged lifestyle. Over the years, the story of the four Romanov sisters and their tragic end in a basement at Ekaterinburg in 1918 has clouded our view of them, leading to a mass of sentimental and idealized hagiography. With this treasure trove of diaries and letters from the grand duchesses to their friends and family, we learn that they were intelligent, sensitive and perceptive witnesses to the dark turmoil within their immediate family and the ominous approach of the Russian Revolution, the nightmare that would sweep their world away, and them along with it. The Romanov Sisters sets out to capture the joy as well as the insecurities and poignancy of those young lives against the backdrop of the dying days of late Imperial Russia, World War I and the Russian Revolution. Helen Rappaport aims to present a new and challenging take on the story, drawing extensively on previously unseen or unpublished letters, diaries and archival sources, as well as private collections. It is a book that will surprise people, even aficionados.

Testing toys with your scorching hot boss is still professional... right? Hard Ware Two dogs, both alike in adorableness, in New York City, where we lay our scene… Okay, maybe that’s a tad dramatic, but who knew a puppy meet-cute could go so horribly wrong? One moment, we're strolling through Central Park, and the next, a mysterious, mouthwateringly hot stranger is demanding I get my Chihuahua tested for STDs. Since he turns out to be the key to getting my newest business venture funded, I guess I’ll do it. It has nothing to do with wanting to see him again. And again. And maybe one more time... Hard Byte In the cerulean, fantasy-inducing eyes of my new Russian boss, Alex Chortsky (a.k.a. the Devil), “project integration” means turning my life’s work into a high-tech "toy." Uh-huh, that kind. When committing corporate sabotage to save my project doesn’t go as planned, my job is on the line, and the only way out is to make a deal with the Devil himself. One fake date in exchange for his help on my project—what could possibly go wrong?
