Book Synopsis Editorial and Opinion by : Steven M. Hallock
Download or read book Editorial and Opinion written by Steven M. Hallock and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2006-11-30 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1930 there were 288 competitive major newspaper markets in the United States. Today, there are fewer than 30. The diminishing diversity of opinion and voices in newspapers editorials is taking place even as technological advances seemingly provide more sources of (the same) information. As Hallock shows, the concentration of media ownership in fewer and fewer hands allows those individuals and entities an inordinate amount of influence. In this intriguing book, he examines 18 newspaper markets to show us exactly how and where this troubling trend is occurring, what it means for the political landscape, and, ultimately, how it can affect us all. Newspaper editorials say a lot about the society in which we live. They are not just an indication and reflection of the issues of the day and of which way the political wind is blowing. They are also a part of the political climate that sets the agenda for politicians, and helps them discern which are the hot-button issues and which side people are on. Journalists and politicians enjoy a level of symbiosis in their relationships-they influence each other indirectly. It therefore follows that when fewer ideas, and a narrower range of opinions, are expressed in the nation's newspapers, there is a real danger that our thinking can become more simplistic as well.

Book Synopsis Market Regulation by : Roger Sherman
Download or read book Market Regulation written by Roger Sherman and published by Addison-Wesley Longman. This book was released on 2008 with total page 968 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Market Regulation gives students the economic intuition to analyze the history of antitrust and regulation, diagnose current corporate strategy, and evaluate possible policy recommendations. Roger Sherman grounds modern examples in historical context and develops thought-provoking discussions to motivate students from many different majors. The structure of the text can easily be adapted for use in a variety of courses. Three main sections--antitrust, industry regulation, and social regulation--present the basic theories. The industry regulation chapters (Part II) are self-contained for flexibility, covering specific industries such as communications, postal service, and energy. "Roger is one of those scholars who is a true credit to the academic world. Not only is he a fine researcher but he has been a great positive influence on graduate students and colleagues over the years. His book is a comprehensive treatment of regulation by one of the best qualified to write such a book." --Michael Crew, Rutgers University

Download or read book Press Concentration and Monopoly written by Robert G. Picard and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1988 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to address the problem of economic concentration and monolopoly in the newspaper industry. Some of the chapters are written from an economic standpoint and deal with the factors that bring about this occurence with the resulting effect that economic conditions have on newspapers' content. The volume also deals with public policy issues involving antitrust, joint operating agreements and other actions. This study provides pragmatic, reliable, independent information about the results of concentration and monopoly and considers their impact on concrete issues such as news diversity, employee relations, advertising rates, and concern for public service, among others.
