Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When transnational couples split, one of the parents wants to reestablish the status quo ante. But now there is a child. Rodrigo Meira brings to light this problem in Brazil and delivered the first research that has delved into the court files, with a view to understanding international abduction in Brazil. The author worked at the Brazilian Central Authority and is concluding his PhD in International Law, in which he examines Brazilian compliance, analyzing cases from 2002 to 2022 and interviewing other professionals who deal everyday with the problem. Meira shows what lies behind this procedural slowness, critically analyzing the culture of biased interpretation by procedural means. He also suggests good points for future changes in Brazilian Law. A compelling bestseller for students, undergraduate and graduate, treating core issues from a lawyer?s perspective. Rather than responding to child abduction with strict legal proceedings, the work argues that national solutions must be met, based on previous international experience. The Long and Winding Lawsuit is also a vade mecum for practitioners desiring a solid footing to make further enquiries on international child abduction in Brazil. This eye-opening book overlaps the lack of information on international abduction and explains the resilience of Brazilian Judiciary to comply with the conventional terms, suggesting what can be done to change this profile.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of 'collecting' undertaken by Joseph Antoine Bruni d'Entrecasteaux and his shipmates in Tasmania, the western Pacific Islands, and Indonesia. In 1791-1794 Bruni d'Entrecasteaux led a French naval expedition in search of the lost vessels of La Pérouse which had last been seen by Europeans at Botany Bay in March 1788. After Bruni d'Entrecasteaux died near the end of the voyage and the expedition collapsed in political disarray in Java, its collections and records were subsequently scattered or lost. The book's core is a richly illustrated examination, analysis, and catalog of a large array of ethnographic objects collected during the voyage, later dispersed, and recently identified in museums in France, Norway, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United States. The focus on artifacts is informed by a broad conception of collecting as grounded in encounters or exchanges with Indigenous protagonists and also as materialized in other genres--written accounts, vocabularies, and visual representations (drawings, engravings, and maps). Historically, the book outlines the antecedents, occurrences, and aftermath of the voyage, including its location within the classic era of European scientific voyaging (1766-1840) and within contemporary colonial networks. Particular chapters trace the ambiguous histories of the extant collections. Ethnographically, contributors are alert to local settings, relationships, practices, and values; to Indigenous uses and significance of objects; to the reciprocal, dialogic nature of collecting; to local agency or innovation in exchanges; and to present implications of objects and their histories, especially for modern scholars and artists, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous.

Book excerpt: Much of the devastation caused by the recent earthquake in Turkey was the result of widespread corruption between the construction industry and government officials. Corruption is part of everyday public life and we tend to take it for granted. However, preventing corruption helps to raise city revenues, improve service delivery, stimulate public confidence and participation, and win elections. This book is designed to help citizens and public officials diagnose, investigate and prevent various kinds of corrupt and illicit behaviour. It focuses on systematic corruption rather than the free-lance activity of a few law-breakers, and emphasises practical preventive measures rather than purely punitive or moralistic campaigns.

In doing so, it represents the grounded voices of authors whose work and lives mean that they engage, on a daily basis, with issues related to housing and spatial rights, and identity struggles around race, gender, disability, sexuality, citizenship and class. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social inclusion is on the agenda of governments, policymakers, and nonstate actors around the world. Underpinning this concern is the realization that despite progress on poverty reduction, some people continue to feel left out. This report aims to unpack the concept of social inclusion and understand better how policies can be designed to further inclusion. First, the report offers a definition of social inclusion as the "process of improving the terms for individuals and groups to take part in society." It unpacks different domains of society that excluded groups and individuals are at particular risk of being left out of -- markets, services, and spaces. Second, the report discusses the most important global mega-trends such as migration, climate chnage, and aging of societies, which will impact challenges and opportunities for inclusion. Finally, it argues that despite these challenges, change towards inclusion is possible and offers examples of inclusionary policies.
