Book excerpt: Eric Hammond's 'The Splendour of God' beckons readers into a realm where the sacred and the secular intertwine, offering a unique and thought-provoking exploration of spirituality. In this enthralling book, Hammond embarks on a quest to unravel the mysteries of the divine, presenting a tapestry of ideas that bridge the gap between faith and reason. Rather than approaching spirituality from a purely religious perspective, Hammond takes a refreshing approach by incorporating philosophical, scientific, and mystical insights. He seamlessly weaves together diverse strands of thought, inviting readers to contemplate the nature of existence, the purpose of life, and the interplay between humanity and the transcendent. 'The Splendour of God' is not a mere collection of abstract concepts; it is a transformative journey. By exploring the various dimensions of human experience, he invites readers to question their assumptions and transcend limitations, ultimately leading to a deeper understanding of the divine. Throughout the book, Hammond draws upon a wide range of sources, from ancient wisdom traditions to modern scientific discoveries, to support his exploration.

Book excerpt: Winner of Grawemeyer Award In this remarkable and timely work - in many ways the culmination of his systematic theology - world-renowned theologian Jurgen Moltmann stands Christian eschatology on its head. Moltmann rejects the traditional approach, which focuses on the End, an apocalyptic finale, as a kind of Christian search for the "final solution." He centers instead on hope and God's promise of new creation for all things. "Christian eschatology," he says, "is the remembered hope of the raising of the crucified Christ, so it talks about beginning afresh in the deadly end." Yet Moltmann's novel framework, deeply informed by Jewish and messianic thought, also fosters rich and creative insights into the perennially nettling questions of eschatology: Are there eternal life and personal identity after death? How is one to think of heaven, hell, and purgatory? What are the historical and cosmological dimensions of Christian hope? What are its social and political implications. In a heartbreakingly fragile and fragment world, Moltmann's comprehensive eschatology surveys the Christian vista, bravely envisioning our "horizons of expectation" for personal, social, even cosmic transformation in God.

Book Synopsis Hagia Sophia and the Byzantine Aesthetic Experience by : Dr Nadine Schibille
Download or read book Hagia Sophia and the Byzantine Aesthetic Experience written by Dr Nadine Schibille and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2014-11-28 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paramount in the shaping of early Byzantine identity was the construction of the church of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople (532-537 CE). This book examines the edifice from the perspective of aesthetics to define the concept of beauty and the meaning of art in early Byzantium. Byzantine aesthetic thought is re-evaluated against late antique Neoplatonism and the writings of Pseudo-Dionysius that offer fundamental paradigms for the late antique attitude towards art and beauty. These metaphysical concepts of aesthetics are ultimately grounded in experiences of sensation and perception, and reflect the ways in which the world and reality were perceived and grasped, signifying the cultural identity of early Byzantium. There are different types of aesthetic data, those present in the aesthetic object and those found in aesthetic responses to the object. This study looks at the aesthetic data embodied in the sixth-century architectural structure and interior decoration of Hagia Sophia as well as in literary responses (ekphrasis) to the building. The purpose of the Byzantine ekphrasis was to convey by verbal means the same effects that the artefact itself would have caused. A literary analysis of these rhetorical descriptions recaptures the Byzantine perception and expectations, and at the same time reveals the cognitive processes triggered by the Great Church. The central aesthetic feature that emerges from sixth-century ekphraseis of Hagia Sophia is that of light. Light is described as the decisive element in the experience of the sacred space and light is simultaneously associated with the notion of wisdom. It is argued that the concepts of light and wisdom are interwoven programmatic elements that underlie the unique architecture and non-figurative decoration of Hagia Sophia. A similar concern for the phenomenon of light and its epistemological dimension is reflected in other contemporary monuments, testifying to the pervasiveness of these aesthetic values in early Byzantium.
