Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The election of populist politicians in recent years seems to challenge the commitment to democracy, if not its ideal. This book argues that majority rule is not the problem; rather, the institutions that stabilize majorities are responsible for the suppression of minority interests. Despite the popular notion that social choice instability (or “cycling”) makes it impossible for majorities to make sound legislation, Yuhui Li argues that the best part of democracy is not the large number of people on the winning side; it is that the winners can be easily divided and realigned with the losers in the cycling process. He shows that minorities’ bargaining power depends on their ability to exploit division within the winning coalition and induce its members to defect, an institutionalized uncertainty that is missing in one-party authoritarian systems. Dividing the Rulers theorizes why such division within the majority is important and what kind of institutional features can help a democratic system maintain such division, which is crucial in preventing the “tyranny of the majority.” These institutional solutions point to a direction of institutional reform that academics, politicians, and voters should collectively pursue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do some voters split their ballots, selecting a Republican for one office and a Democrat for another? Why do voters often choose one party to control the White House while the other controls the Congress? Barry Burden and David Kimball address these fundamental puzzles of American elections by explaining the causes of divided government and debunking the myth that voters prefer the division of power over one-party control. Why Americans Split Their Tickets links recent declines in ticket-splitting to sharpening policy differences between parties and demonstrates why candidates' ideological positions still matter in American elections. "Burden and Kimball have given us the most careful and thorough analysis of split-ticket voting yet. It won't settle all of the arguments about the origins of ticket splitting and divided government, but these arguments will now be much better informed. Why Americans Split Their Tickets is essential reading for anyone interested in understanding the major trends in U.S. electoral politics of the past several decades." -Gary Jacobson, University of California, San Diego "When voters split their tickets or produce divided government, it is common to attribute the outcome as a strategic verdict or a demand for partisan balance. Burden and Kimball strongly challenge such claims. With a thorough and deft use of statistics, they portray ticket-splitting as a by-product of the separate circumstances that drive the outcomes of the different electoral contests. This will be the book to be reckoned with on the matter of ticket splitting." -Robert Erikson, Columbia University "[Burden and Kimball] offset the expansive statistical analysis by delving into the historical circumstances and results of recent campaigns and elections. ... [They] make a scholarly and informative contribution to the understanding of the voting habits of the American electorate-and the resulting composition of American government." -Shant Mesrobian, NationalJournal.com

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: InThe Division of Christendom, revered historian Hans J. Hillerbrand details the events and ideas of the sixteenth century and contends that the Protestant Reformation must be seen as an interplay of religious, political, and economic forces in which religion played a major role. Hillerbrand tells the fascinating story of the ways in which theological disagreements divided the centuries-old Christian church and the roles that leading characters such as Luther, Zwingli, Anabaptists, and Calvin played in establishing new churches, even as Roman Catholicism continued to develop in its own ways. The book covers all significant aspects of this period and interprets these important events in their own context while reflecting on the consequences of the Reformation for later periods and for today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the course of most of Russia's turbulent history, czars ruled. The story of these men and women - as diverse as the lands they governed - is, in many ways, the story of Russia itself. From the birth of the Kievan state in the second half of the ninth century to the murder of Czar Nicholas II and his family in 1918, historians James P. Duffy and Vincent L. Ricci trace the long and twisted line of imperial rule in Russia, offering many insights into the uses and abuses of absolute power, as well as a glimpse at world history through the eyes of those who made it. The Czars is a vital page in the literature of Russian history.

Aristotle (384—322 B.C.) was a Greek philosopher and scientist. His writings cover many subjects—including physics, biology, zoology, metaphysics, logic, ethics, aesthetics, poetry, theater, music, rhetoric, linguistics, politics and government—and constitute the first comprehensive system of Western philosophy. According to the Encyclopædia Britannica, “Aristotle was the first genuine scientist in history . . . [and] every scientist is in his debt.” Plato (428/427 or 424/423–348/347 B.C.E.) was a philosopher, as well as mathematician, in Classical Greece. He is considered an essential figure in the development of philosophy, especially the Western tradition, and he founded the Academy in Athens, the first institution of higher learning in the Western world. Along with his teacher Socrates and his most famous student, Aristotle, Plato laid the foundations of Western philosophy and science. Alfred North Whitehead once noted: “the safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato.” ——BOOKS BY ARISTOTLE—— —LOGIC— INSTRUMENT, TOOL, ORGAN | ORGANON [*] CATEGORIES ON INTERPRETATION PRIOR ANALYTICS POSTERIOR ANALYTICS TOPICS SOPHISTICAL REFUTATIONS —PHYSICS— PHYSICS ON THE HEAVENS ON GENERATION AND CORRUPTION METEOROLOGY ON THE UNIVERSE ON THE SOUL LITTLE PHYSICAL TREATISES | PARVA NATURALIA [*] SENSE AND SENSIBILIA ON MEMORY ON SLEEP ON DREAMS ON DIVINATION IN SLEEP ON LENGTH AND SHORTNESS OF LIFE ON YOUTH, OLD AGE, LIFE AND DEATH, AND RESPIRATION ON BREATH HISTORY OF ANIMALS PARTS OF ANIMALS MOVEMENT OF ANIMALS PROGRESSION OF ANIMALS GENERATION OF ANIMALS ON COLORS ON THINGS HEARD PHYSIOGNOMONICS ON PLANTS ON MARVELLOUS THINGS HEARD MECHANICS ON INDIVISIBLE LINES THE SITUATIONS AND NAMES OF WINDS ON MELISSUS, XENOPHANES, AND GORGIAS PROBLEMS —METAPHYSICS— METAPHYSICS —ETHICS AND POLITICS— NICOMACHEAN ETHICS GREAT ETHICS EUDEMIAN ETHICS ON VIRTUES AND VICES POLITICS ECONOMICS CONSTITUTION OF THE ATHENIANS —RHETORIC AND POETICS— RHETORIC RHETORIC TO ALEXANDER POETICS SELECT FRAGMENTS ——BOOKS ABOUT ARISTOTLE—— ARISTOTLE ARISTOTLE AND ANCIENT EDUCATIONAL IDEALS ARTICLES ON ARISTOTLE ——BOOKS BY PLATO—— CHARMIDES LYSIS LACHES PROTAGORAS EUTHYDEMUS CRATYLUS PHAEDRUS ION SYMPOSIUM MENO EUTHYPHRO APOLOGY CRITO PHAEDO GORGIAS LESSER HIPPIAS ALCIBIADES I MENEXENUS ALCIBIADES II ERYXIAS THE REPUBLIC TIMAEUS CRITIAS PARMENIDES THEAETETUS SOPHIST STATESMAN PHILEBUS LAWS —SPURIOUS TEXTS— HIPPARCHUS THE RIVAL LOVERS THEAGES MINOS EPINOMIS SISYPHUS AXIOCHUS DEMODOCUS HALCYON ON JUSTICE ON VIRTUE DEFINITIONS EPIGRAMS THE EPISTLES ——BOOKS ABOUT PLATO—— INTRODUCTION TO THE PHILOSOPHY AND WRITINGS OF PLATO PLATO AND PLATONISM THE INFLUENCE OF PLATO ON SAINT BASIL ARTICLES ON PLATO CATHOLIC WAY PUBLISHING
