This book was released on 2013 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Diversifying the rural economy is essential for economic growth, employment and sustainable development in rural areas. This report concludes that the Commission and the Member States have, only to a limited extent, obtained value for money through the funding of the measures aimed at diversifying the rural economy. This was due to a lack of a clear demonstration of the need for support, the absence of specific objectives, and excessively broad eligibility and selection criteria. Member States did not take adequate steps to mitigate the risks of deadweight, displacement and overspending resulting in an inefficient use of resources. The ECA makes recommendations to help the Commission and Member States remedy these weaknesses." -- Page [4] of cover.

This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper empirically investigates the role of off-farm and non-agricultural activities in Myanmar’s rural sector, based primarily on the nationally representative MLCS 2016/17. We find evidence of extensive diversification: rural households are generating about 25 percent of their income on the farm; the remaining income comes from wage labor (34 percent), non-agricultural businesses (27 percent), and about 15 percent from passive sources (remittances and others). More than half of rural households engage in non-farm activities. Despite this large participation, the non-farm sector is informal and has yet to reach its full job-creating potential. Diversification is broad-reaching, and prevalent at all levels of income; however, wealthier households participate more heavily in the non-farm sector. Land constraints, household size, education levels, and gender all appear correlated with households’ propensity to diversify. Since the start of the twin crises, we continue to see significant diversification in rural incomes and all sectors – farm and non-farm – suffering very similar income shocks.

Book Synopsis Diversification and Accumulation in Rural Tanzania by : Pekka Seppälä
Download or read book Diversification and Accumulation in Rural Tanzania written by Pekka Seppälä and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 1998 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent studies on rural Africa increasingly reveal a pattern of development which is more complex than that proposed in earlier unilinear theories. The researchers have recently located intricate systems of patronage, local networks of cooperation, indigenous social safety nets but also alarming rates of differentiation. This study extends the analysis of local complexity to the labour sphere, showing how rural producers tend to diversify into multiple sources of income resulting in innovative straddling between them. The diversification which is a necessity for the poorest households provides the means for risk aversion and accumulation for the wealthier ones. Diversification and Accumulation in Rural Tanzania is a thought-provoking and theoretically challenging work showing how cultural issues penetrate economic practices and modify the outcome of any economic interventions.

Download or read book Transformation and Diversification of the Rural Economy in Asia written by Roehlano Mariano Briones and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This paper seeks to analyse the transformation and diversification of the rural economy in Asia, focusing on the implications for income and employment opportunities for rural communities. Rural non-farm employment is a sizeable component of rural employment, tends to concentrate in services, and over time has grown more quickly than agricultural demployment. Non-farm income accounts for a significant share of rural household incomes. This paper suggests a role for a cluster-based industrial policy to further support the rapid expansion of rural non-farm employment. In some areas, this will be composed of rural industries; services will nonetheless continue to comprise the bulk of the rural non-farm economy, drawing its impetus primarily from interaction with existing or emerging urban centres."--Page 4.
Book Synopsis Rural Wealth Creation by : John L. Pender
Download or read book Rural Wealth Creation written by John L. Pender and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the role of wealth in achieving sustainable rural economic development. The authors define wealth as all assets net of liabilities that can contribute to well-being, and they provide examples of many forms of capital – physical, financial, human, natural, social, and others. They propose a conceptual framework for rural wealth creation that considers how multiple forms of wealth provide opportunities for rural development, and how development strategies affect the dynamics of wealth. They also provide a new accounting framework for measuring wealth stocks and flows. These conceptual frameworks are employed in case study chapters on measuring rural wealth and on rural wealth creation strategies. Rural Wealth Creation makes numerous contributions to research on sustainable rural development. Important distinctions are drawn to help guide wealth measurement, such as the difference between the wealth located within a region and the wealth owned by residents of a region, and privately owned versus publicly owned wealth. Case study chapters illustrate these distinctions and demonstrate how different forms of wealth can be measured. Several key hypotheses are proposed about the process of rural wealth creation, and these are investigated by case study chapters assessing common rural development strategies, such as promoting rural energy industries and amenity-based development. Based on these case studies, a typology of rural wealth creation strategies is proposed and an approach to mapping the potential of such strategies in different contexts is demonstrated. This book will be relevant to students, researchers, and policy makers looking at rural community development, sustainable economic development, and wealth measurement.
