Book excerpt: As a result of the declining contribution of rice based farming in East Asia, investment in agriculture must diversify to maintain rural incomes. In the short term, countries should : 1) diversify toward crops for which there is a promising market ( fruits, vegetables, livestock products ) rather than sugar, rubber, coconuts and palm oil; and 2) expand small scale industry, marketing, and construction in rural areas. Long term needs include : a) higher yielding secondary food crops; b) better integration of livestock and crop production; c) more flexible irrigation and drainage systems; and d) improved technology to lower the cost of production. The paper concludes that the challenge to agriculture in East Asia is to sustain rice farming whicle expanding into a more flexible, diverse agriculture. The task for aid agencies will be to come up with suitable analytical skills and technical knowledge for the switch from commodity based project lending to broader sectoral support.

Book excerpt: "This paper seeks to analyse the transformation and diversification of the rural economy in Asia, focusing on the implications for income and employment opportunities for rural communities. Rural non-farm employment is a sizeable component of rural employment, tends to concentrate in services, and over time has grown more quickly than agricultural demployment. Non-farm income accounts for a significant share of rural household incomes. This paper suggests a role for a cluster-based industrial policy to further support the rapid expansion of rural non-farm employment. In some areas, this will be composed of rural industries; services will nonetheless continue to comprise the bulk of the rural non-farm economy, drawing its impetus primarily from interaction with existing or emerging urban centres."--Page 4.

Book excerpt: More than the Soil focuses on the social, cultural, economic and technological processes that have transformed rural areas of Southeast Asia. The underlying premise is that rural lives and livelihoods in this region have undergone fundamental change. No longer can we assume that rural livelihoods are founded on agriculture; nor can we assume that people envisage their futures in terms of farming. The inter-penetration of the rural and urban, and the degree to which rural people migrate between rural and urban areas, and shift from agriculture to non-agriculture, raises fundamental questions about how we conceptualise the rural Southeast Asia and the households to be found there.

Book excerpt: This book looks at the major policy challenges facing developing Asia and how the region sustains rapid economic growth to reduce multidimensional poverty through socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable measures. Asia is facing many challenges arising from population growth, rapid urbanization, provision of services, climate change and the need to redress declining growth after the global financial crisis. This book examines poverty and related issues and aims to advance the development of new tools and measurement of multidimensional poverty and poverty reduction policy analysis. The book covers a wide range of issues, including determinants and causes of poverty and its changes; consequences and impacts of poverty on human capital formation, growth and consumption; assessment of poverty strategies and policies; the role of government, NGOs and other institutions in poverty reduction; rural-urban migration and poverty; vulnerability to poverty; breakdown of poverty into chronic and transitory components; and a comparative study on poverty issues in Asia and other regions. The book will appeal to all those interested in economic development, resources, policies and economic welfare and growth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Debates about public expenditure in the agricultural sector have reopened in many developing and emerging economies because of high budget deficits and changes in public opinion. As a result, agricultural policy in many of these countries is beginning to take a more market-oriented approach to agrarian problems, most notably through the introduction of contract farming. This book explores the policy issues around contract farming and its transformative potential and addresses the lack of empirical research on this topic by focusing on South Asia: principally India, Bangladesh and Nepal. The book first addresses the effects of contract farming (vertical coordination) on productivity, food security indicators (yield, consumption expenditures, prices), employment and input usage. Then it draws lessons from the South Asian case studies on the impact of institutional changes, like contract farming, on income and food security of smallholder households. The core of the book includes case study chapters on several commodities that are produced under contract farming, including vegetables and fisheries in Bangladesh, low-value crops in Nepal and coffee in India. Other chapters also explore contracts, storage, input usage and technical efficiency in these cases. This book serves as an essential guide to academics, researchers, students, legislative liaisons and think tank groups interested in agrarian issues, agricultural economics and agricultural policy in emerging economies and particularly in South Asia.

Book excerpt: This paper examines the transformation and diversification of the rural economy in Asia, focusing on the role and importance of the rural non-farm economy and employment in economic transformation and related diversification of employment and income opportunities for rural communities. Looking at the linkages across sectors (agriculture and others) and across regions (urban and rural), the paper stresses the role of agriculture and urban centers as key drivers of the rural non-farm economy. It considers strategic directions to be pursued to leverage diversification opportunities for rural economies to reduce rural poverty and inequality.
