From the recreational diver, to the elite deep saturation commercial divers, to the military special operations divers, and everything in between. Diver Medical Technician—Care of the Injured Diver, addresses the knowledge and skills required for the DMT to care for the vast variety of injuries that can befall anyone working or playing in a subaquatic environment. This workbook is intended to accompany the Diver Medical Technician—Care of the Injured Diver, 1st Edition textbook. It will hopefully provide exercises that will challenge the student and reinforce what was learned from both Diver Medical Technician—Care of the Injured Diver and lessons taught in the classroom. This workbook will also act as an examination review for both the NBDHMT and IMCA certification examinations. In many cases the Diver Medical Technician is the only healthcare professional available with the skills and knowledge to save the life of the injured diver. This workbook will test the knowledge of those skills and the knowledge base required to treat those injured in the diving and off-shore environment.

Beyond the injuries sustained due to operating in a dysbaric environment, the Diver Medical Technician must care for numerous non-diving related injuries, injuries that occur in the diving workplace. This is the off-shore commercial environment, the public safety environment, and the field of military operations. These divers are not only exposed to the physics of the undersea world, but also the injury potential of the industrial workplace. In many cases the Diver Medical Technician is the only healthcare professional available with the skills and knowledge to save the life of the injured diver. This text addresses those skills and the knowledge base required to treat those injured in the diving and off-shore environment.

This text has been written to provide trained Diver Medics with a reference guide to care for individuals in need of not only emergency care but also many of the non-emergent clinical medical issues that arise in remote locations. It is assumed that the medics utilizing this material are trained to a level of at least emergency medical technician or equivalent and are properly supplied and equipped. This is not a survival or 'do-it-yourself' manual. Rather it is a combination of several fields of medicine and treatment regiments that would apply to the Diver Medic's skill set in an isolated area. In many cases, the Diver Medic working in the remote areas of the world, isolated from definitive healthcare facilities or advanced emergency medical services, may be the only source of healthcare for those in his or her charge. As such, their medical mission will not be limited to providing just emergency care to those critically ill or injured. It will also involve dealing with common medical issues that are experienced on a day-to-day basis. The working environment could be an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico or the North Sea, an isolated installation in the Middle East, or a saturation habitat stored at 1000 fsw (300+meters). Not ideal conditions by any means. Evacuation or advanced assistance can be hours, if not days away. The information contained in this book is a presented in a straight forward, nuts-and-bolts way. The clinical issues are formatted in a, 'what it is, what causes it, what are the signs and symptoms, and how do we treat it' manner for ease of use. It is sincerely hoped that this practical guide will find its way into every Diver Medic's kit. and make life a little easier along the way.

Book excerpt: This book is designed to be a physician's guide for those interested in diving and hyperbaric environments. It is not a detailed document for the erudite researcher; rather, it is a source of information for the scuba-diving physician who is searching for answers put to him by his fellow nonmedical divers. Following the publication of The Underwater Handbook: A Guide to Physiology and Performance for the Engineer there were frequent requests for a companion volume for the physician. This book is designed to fill the void. Production of the book has been supported by the Office of Naval Research and by the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, Research and Development Command, under Navy Contract No. NOOOOI4-78-C-0604. Our heartfelt thanks go to the many authors without whose contributions the book could not have been produced. These articles are signed by the responsible authors, and the names a~e also listed alphabetically in these preliminary pages. Every chapter was officially reviewed by at least one expert in the field covered and these reviewers are also listed on these pages. Our thanks go to them for their valuable assistance. We are grateful to Marthe Beckett Kent for editing Chapter III. Our thanks also go to Mrs. Carolyn Paddon for typing and retyping the manuscripts, and to Mrs. Catherine Coppola, who so expertly handled the many fiscal affairs.

Leonard Starbeck served for over 28 years in the U.S. Navy and Marines, and in this fascinating memoir he answers that very question. Follow along as he tells stories of his many adventures travelling the world as an Independent Medical Diver (DMT/IDC) and a tactical medic, and more recently as a surgical nurse and Merchant Marine Medical Service Officer. Read how he dealt with harrowing medical emergencies associated with diving and high pressure conditions from deep ocean dives to the top of 12,000 foot mountains looking for unexploded bombs. On any given day he could be sailing, diving, shooting, or parachuting out of a plane, on duty as a medical corpsman, a boat driver, a marine mammal tech, a dive instructor, a gofer, a chauffeur, and a gardener. Buckle up and enjoy the stories of his incredible adventures.
