Queen’s adventure on campus is only the first of this incomparable collection of short mysteries. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Paterno was seven when he left Castelmezzano, a small mountain town in Basilicata to set sail on one of the rattletrap ships headed to America. Thirty years later he was one of the top builders in New York City, among the first to construct the skyscrapers that would form the world's most famous skyline. Intelligence, brilliance, intuition and an ability to stay ahed of the times made him a leading figure in the life of Manhattan. He created garden communities, focused on new technologies and turned to the best architects. Paterno didn't just want to offer houses, but new lifestyles to tens of thousands of people. His first American dream looked like a white castle at the northernmost tip of Manhattan, where he lived for years with his wife and son, sorrounded by a small but very loyal retinue. A friend of Giuseppe Prezzolini, he donated a library of 20.000 books, the Paterno Library, to the Casa Italiana at Columbia University. Fiorello La Guardia, the Italian-American mayor of New York City, called him a genius. Born into poverty, Paterno died a wealthy man on the green of the most exclusive country club in Westchester.
Download or read book Land Grabbing written by Stefano Liberti and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2013-11-19 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the governments and corporations buying up vast tracts of the Third World, it is ‘land leasing’; to its critics, it is nothing better than ‘land grabbing’ – the engine powering a new era of colonialism. In this arresting account of how millions of hectares of fertile soil are stolen to feed wealthy westerners thousands of miles away, journalist Stefano Liberti takes readers on a tour of contemporary exploitation. It is a journey encompassing a Dutch-owned model farm in Ethiopia; a conference in Riyadh, where representatives of Third World governments compete to attract Saudi investors; meetings in Rome where the fate of nations is decided; and the headquarters of the Movement of Landless Workers in São Paulo. Since the food crisis of 2007–8, when the cost of staples such as rice and corn went through the roof, the race to acquire land in the southern hemisphere has become more intense than ever. Land Grabbing is the shocking story of how one half of the world is starved to feed the other.

Book Synopsis Comparative Law in a Global Context by : Werner F. Menski
Download or read book Comparative Law in a Global Context written by Werner F. Menski and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-03-30 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in its second edition, this textbook presents a critical rethinking of the study of comparative law and legal theory in a globalising world, and proposes an alternative model. It highlights the inadequacies of current Western theoretical approaches in comparative law, international law, legal theory and jurisprudence, especially for studying Asian and African laws, arguing that they are too parochial and eurocentric to meet global challenges. Menski argues for combining modern natural law theories with positivist and socio-legal traditions, building an interactive, triangular concept of legal pluralism. Advocated as the fourth major approach to legal theory, this model is applied in analysing the historical and conceptual development of Hindu law, Muslim law, African laws and Chinese law.
Book Synopsis Legal Orientalism by : Teemu Ruskola
Download or read book Legal Orientalism written by Teemu Ruskola and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2013-06-03 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Cold War ended, China has become a global symbol of disregard for human rights, while the United States has positioned itself as the world’s chief exporter of the rule of law. How did lawlessness become an axiom about Chineseness rather than a fact needing to be verified empirically, and how did the United States assume the mantle of law’s universal appeal? In a series of wide-ranging inquiries, Teemu Ruskola investigates the history of “legal Orientalism”: a set of globally circulating narratives about what law is and who has it. For example, why is China said not to have a history of corporate law, as a way of explaining its “failure” to develop capitalism on its own? Ruskola shows how a European tradition of philosophical prejudices about Chinese law developed into a distinctively American ideology of empire, influential to this day. The first Sino-U.S. treaty in 1844 authorized the extraterritorial application of American law in a putatively lawless China. A kind of legal imperialism, this practice long predated U.S. territorial colonialism after the Spanish-American War in 1898, and found its fullest expression in an American district court’s jurisdiction over the “District of China.” With urgent contemporary implications, legal Orientalism lives on in the enduring damage wrought on the U.S. Constitution by late nineteenth-century anti-Chinese immigration laws, and in the self-Orientalizing reforms of Chinese law today. In the global politics of trade and human rights, legal Orientalism continues to shape modern subjectivities, institutions, and geopolitics in powerful and unacknowledged ways.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the ongoing attempt to offer new interpretations of cultural phenomena, the Baroque is not one of the most frequently discussed periods, but we can easily agree that it merits new attention. Most of the essays contained in this volume are interdisciplinary; in particular, they integrate literary, ideological, social, and artistic dimensions. Others aim to contribute to a sharper definition of this rather elusive phenomenon.
