Book excerpt: "A tense psychological drama with a voice that pulls you in and a twist you won't see coming."—Gretchen McNeil, author of Ten A 2018 Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection. Theo Mackey only remembers one thing for certain about the fire that destroyed his home: he lit the match. Sure, it was an accident. But the blaze killed his mom and set his dad on a path to self-destruction. Everything else about that fateful night is full of gaping holes in Theo’s mind, for good reason. Maybe it’s better that way. As captain of the Ellis Hollow Diving Team, with straight A's and solid friends, he's only one semester away from securing a scholarship, and leaving his past behind. But when a family history project gets assigned at school, new memories come rushing to the surface, memories that make Theo question what he really knows about his family, the night of the fire, and if he can trust anyone—including himself. "Heartbreaking, human and heroic, Demetra Brodsky's Dive Smack is a Perfect 10!"— Karen LaFace, 1992 USA Olympic Springboard Diver At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

One of the most wonderful things about it is that the results are immediate. My whole perception and relationship to money has undergone a major, substantial change." —Chris Attwood, writer and teacher, California "I've spent most of my life trying to figure out what's true and what's real. I have to say I now have a clear glimpse into what it really is." —Tom Hill, Colorado "Before Busting Loose from The Money Game, I was very unhappy and frustrated in my life. I was driven to find more ways to make money. I changed jobs, cities, countries, went back to school, read books. Financially, the stress was causing anxiety attacks and migraines so severe I stayed in bed. The joy I feel now is priceless. Money is there when I need it, in the amount that's needed, no matter what occurs (car repairs, unplanned trips, etc.). It's absolutely amazing!" —Suresh Thakoor, Texas "As a retired professor on a fixed and limited income, I always lived from a tight budget and felt compressed by it-especially at the end of the year. I don't use a budget anymore and have opened up new streams of income that were always closed to me in the past." —Howard Rovics, Connecticut "It opened a whole new dimension for me and shifted my perspective on life completely. I especially love how practical it is. The application is so simple, so effective . . . and fun!" —Doris Kahle, Hagen, Germany "I'd had a lot of success in the corporate arena, made a ridiculous amount of money and lost a ridiculous amount of money. But I was caught in a cycle of making it, losing it. I needed to break that cycle-for myself and my family-and this gave me the keys to do that. Busting Loose from The Money Game opened a window I had no clue even existed. This is very cutting-edge, a revolutionary approach to unwrapping yourself from limitations. If you're not satisfied with where you are financially and you're concerned about your future, get this book!" —Ben Coleman, Texas

Book excerpt: The first major English translation of one of contemporary Japan's bestselling and most celebrated authors From Akutagawa Award-winning author Yoko Ogawa comes a haunting trio of novellas about love, fertility, obsession, and how even the most innocent gestures may contain a hairline crack of cruel intent. A lonely teenage girl falls in love with her foster brother as she watches him leap from a high diving board into a pool--a peculiar infatuation that sends unexpected ripples through her life. A young woman records the daily moods of her pregnant sister in a diary, taking meticulous note of a pregnancy that may or may not be a hallucination--but whose hallucination is it, hers or her sister's? A woman nostalgically visits her old college dormitory on the outskirts of Tokyo, a boarding house run by a mysterious triple amputee with one leg. Hauntingly spare, beautiful, and twisted, The Diving Pool is a disquieting and at times darkly humorous collection of novellas about normal people who suddenly discover their own dark possibilities.

Its players face singular challenges in overcoming the stress, anxiety, and fear of failure (and success) that characterize that environment. As the team psychiatrist for the Baltimore Orioles and the Baltimore Ravens since 1996, the author of Sports Psychiatry: Strategies for Life Balance and Peak Performance is uniquely aware of the knowledge and skills mental health practitioners require to work effectively with athletes as they strive to play better, heal better, and feel better. The book is grounded in evidence-based psychiatry, but is written in a style that will engage and inform not only mental health professionals, but also primary care and sports medicine physicians, athletic trainers, team owners and managers, interested laypeople -- and, of course -- athletes themselves. Absorbing narratives exemplify the themes and issues covered in each chapter, including how to recognize and conquer stress, how to prepare mentally for competition, how to manage pain, and how to tune out the myriad distractions of the athlete's life and focus on performance. The strategies that Dr. McDuff offers are down-to-earth, insightful, and informed by his many years of experience treating players at the highest level. Practical and compassionate, Sports Psychiatry: Strategies for Life Balance and Peak Performance will be of enormous help to readers inside and outside the sports arena.

Book excerpt: This biography of the WWII flying ace recounts his legendary career in the RAF, his time as a POW and his postwar life as a beloved public figure. One of the most famous fighter pilots of the Second World War, Basil Gerald “Stapme” Stapleton achieved flying ace status in the Battle of Britain and was immortalized in Richard Hillary’s classic wartime memoir The Last Enemy. Born in Durban, South Africa, Stapleton joined the Royal Air Force in 1939 and flew Spitfires with 603 Squadron. His legendary escapades during the Battle of Britain account for nearly twenty enemy aircraft destroyed, probably destroyed or damaged. Stapleton later became flight commander of 257 Squadron and a gunnery instructor at RAF Kenley and Central Gunnery School, Catfoss. He returned to combat in 1944, flying Typhoons as commander of 247 Squadron. For his courageous combat during the Battle of Arnhem, he received the Dutch Flying Cross. In December of 1944, he was forced to land inside German lines and spent the rest of the war as a prisoner in Stalag Luft I on the Baltic coast. Nicknamed 'Stapme' after a phrase used in his favorite cartoon 'Just Jake', Stapleton was a larger-than-life character who became a beloved public figure in his postwar life. With his handlebar mustache and good-humored bravado, he became for many the quintessential ace fighter pilot. In this authoritative and intimate volume, Stapleton tells his full story to historian David Ross, author of the acclaimed biography Richard Hillary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A triumphant memoir by the former editor-in-chief of French Elle that reveals an indomitable spirit and celebrates the liberating power of consciousness. In 1995, Jean-Dominique Bauby was the editor-in-chief of French Elle, the father of two young children, a 44-year-old man known and loved for his wit, his style, and his impassioned approach to life. By the end of the year he was also the victim of a rare kind of stroke to the brainstem. After 20 days in a coma, Bauby awoke into a body which had all but stopped working: only his left eye functioned, allowing him to see and, by blinking it, to make clear that his mind was unimpaired. Almost miraculously, he was soon able to express himself in the richest detail: dictating a word at a time, blinking to select each letter as the alphabet was recited to him slowly, over and over again. In the same way, he was able eventually to compose this extraordinary book. By turns wistful, mischievous, angry, and witty, Bauby bears witness to his determination to live as fully in his mind as he had been able to do in his body. He explains the joy, and deep sadness, of seeing his children and of hearing his aged father's voice on the phone. In magical sequences, he imagines traveling to other places and times and of lying next to the woman he loves. Fed only intravenously, he imagines preparing and tasting the full flavor of delectable dishes. Again and again he returns to an "inexhaustible reservoir of sensations," keeping in touch with himself and the life around him. Jean-Dominique Bauby died two days after the French publication of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. This book is a lasting testament to his life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We All Wrote on the Same Outhouse Walls is a warm-hearted very humorous book about the many joys and few sorrows of growing up during the 40s and 50s in a small town exiled in the Appalachian foothills. The book is about the author's small hometown which The Wall Street Journal described as "Intact but decaying: pure 19th Century." The Journal suggested that the town could be "On the scale of Williamsburg," but the town folks "Don't want to be preserved, saved or otherwise bothered by outsiders, no matter how good their intentions." This priceless narrative tells about first grade in a one-room schoolhouse called Possum Hollow, a splendid misspent youth, and a homespun education which was acquired while working in a country story and hanging out in a poolroom. The hilarious description of an endangered time and place is about colorful and unforgettable characters. It tells memorable stories and folklore which began with "I mind the time," and ended somewhat in borderline disbelief, but always in laughter. It's about nicknames, front porches, and coon dog field trials after church. And it's' about the down-home wit, sayings and opinions that made the personalities and their town so engaging. The book also tells what the old timers, the orthopedic set, would tell you, whether asked or not, about the 60s movement, the break-up of the traditional family, the present day media, and the theory of victimization. Their opinions, today, would be unfashionable to some, but refreshingly politically inappropriate to others. Not that the author's small hometown was perfect or blameless. The good old fashioned behavior by some of getting drunk on Saturday night and going to church on Sunday was alive and well. The town has its assortment of saints and sinners. But when it came to values and time-honored beliefs which now seem out-dated, back then small towns had them. maybe that's what one of John Steinbeck's characters in Mice and Men pointed out when the character commented, "There's nothing wrong anymore." We All Wrote on the Same Outhouse Walls is a must read for all of you who will enjoy a nostalgic visit back to your youth or your small hometown. It will bring back happy memories of a better time and make you glad that you were there. The book is also a must read for young readers who wonder what it was really like, and if they really were "the good old days." Most of all the book is for those of you who just want a good laugh.

In his first Olympics, he failed miserably, not winning a single medal. Four years later saw a different story: he mounted the podium twice, winning both gold and bronze. The difference? In the intervening years, he’d changed the focus of his quest from seeking glory for himself to giving glory to God. In Greater Than Gold, Boudia provides a behind-the-scenes access to the rarefied world of world-class athletics while also showing readers that when they place their hope in God, they receive what they’ve been seeking all along.
