Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ditched Dreams is a dazzling novel about workers in a mysterious mine where they must remain for two years without leaving. To escape that suffocating environment, the miners tell tales of frustrated love affairs, revenge, dreams, and witchcraft which are written down and retold by a worker nicknamed Foureyes. The novel is spiced with scatological and picaresque scenes, witchcraft spells and mythological beings, along with science-fiction inventions such as a Pleasurematic. Readers have recognized scenes alluding to classical literary works, biblical passages, adventure novels, old movie serials, and contemporary films. Ditched Dreams is a cavalcade in which down-to-earth Brazilian humor provokes non-stop Rabelaisian laughter as the whip of social criticism. The narrative, essentially oral, includes samples of the vast linguistic mosaic found in Brazilian Portuguese, dexterously adapted into a literary dialect that evokes vernacular English from everywhere and nowhere in particular.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, men dreamed of cutting a canal across the Florida peninsula. Intended to reduce shipping times, it was championed in the early twentieth century as a way to make the mostly rural state a center of national commerce and trade. Rejected by the Army Corps of Engineers as "not worthy," the project received continued support from Florida legislators. Federal funding was eventually allocated and work began in the 1930s, but the canal quickly became a lightning rod for controversy. Steven Noll and David Tegeder trace the twists and turns of the project through the years, drawing on a wealth of archival and primary sources. Far from being a simplistic morality tale of good environmentalists versus evil canal developers, the story of the Cross Florida Barge Canal is a complex one of competing interests amid the changing political landscape of modern Florida. Thanks to the unprecedented success of environmental citizen activists, construction was halted in 1971, though it took another twenty years for the project to be canceled. Though the land intended for the canal was deeded to the state and converted into the Cross Florida Greenway, certain aspects of the dispute--including the fate of Rodman Reservoir--have yet to be resolved.

Book excerpt: This book is at once a detailed ethnographic and historical analysis of one of the final modern-day experiences of first-culture contact, a classic example of historical geography, and an extraordinary tale of exploration, imperialist arrogance, blood-shed, suffering, courage, and near disaster. By the 1930's, the interior of the island of New Guinea, protected from outside penetration over the centuries by its rugged mountains and unruly rivers, remained one of the few places outsiders had never seen. In early January of 1935, the Papuan colonial administration dispatched patrol officers including 40 Papuan carriers and police, to explore the vast unknown country between the Strickland and Purari rivers. The expedition moved inland along the river systems by steam launch and canoe until, in mid-February, they abandoned their boats and proceeded on foot through the tropical forest and into the mountains. Along the way, the party encountered hitherto unsuspected populations - peoples of six tribes, numbering in the tens of thousands - who had never before seen white men and who were still using Stone Age tools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the history of Nevada City, California, through the eyes of the men that built it. For its first 100 years, everything in Nevada City revolved around gold. But this is not another book about finding gold. To get gold, you needed water — to pan for it, to wash it in a sluice, to blast away a hillside with an immense water cannon, or to turn the water wheel of a quartz-ore stamp mill. This book instead asks: How did they get the water? It reveals the engineering marvels that brought water to Nevada City’s dry hills from tens of miles away. But what if all the water in every ravine, creek and valley around Nevada City was controlled by just three men? Well, for three decades, every miner, farmer or business could only buy water from the powerful South Yuba Canal Company. What would happen if you got into an argument with them? Or couldn’t afford to pay their water bill? Or even dared to compete with them? The book traces the ingenuity and hard work of the town’s miners and ditch builders, highlighting in detail the history and origins of various local neighborhoods, including Nevada City itself, Hirschman's Pond, Sugar Loaf Mountain, Deer Creek, Scotts Flat, Manzanita Diggings, Gold Flat and various mining camps along Washington Ridge. This vivid portrayal follows the area’s evolution from the chaos of thousands of miners scratching out a living in clusters of muddy tents to a genteel town with hotels, stores, banks, theaters and libraries. What began as a search to uncover a sprawling network of old ditches, turned into a collection of never-before-told stories of the gold miners, the ruthless and greedy ditch company, and the rivals that it crushed. The domineering ditch company later enabled the next generation of monopoly to provide electrical power. The story of PG&E also started in Nevada City. This, in turn, led to the now more forward-looking stewardship of the Nevada Irrigation District. The unique format of this book blends beautiful archival images with more than 35 in-depth biographies of key figures in Nevada City. This 884 page hardcover book includes over 600 photos and illustrations, including 200 historic photographs and 75 hand-crafted maps based on modern lidar technology that reveal the locations of the old mining ditches, flumes, mines and tunnels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Kurdish boy grows up in a peaceful village in Kurdistan, Iraq. His life in his small village with a large family in their two-room mud brick home is happy and peaceful. He experiences all the joys, triumphs, and activities of a young boy growing up in the country, complete with sheep, dogs, family farming, and broken bicycles. Unfortunately, his life is systematically disrupted by military raids, the deaths of loved ones, economic government oppression, and violent prejudice against his people. These trials ignite a spark of passion for finding out the true history of his people as he strives for the peace, security, and hope that he held as a child. The new knowledge fuels the flames and drives him to assist in clandestine missions against the Iraqi Army. With new vigor, the flame bursts into a bonfire in his soul as he takes the next step to join the secret resistance forces of Kurdistan and becomes a Peshmerga, or “one who stands in front of death.” He spends years resisting government oppression, sometimes winning but always walking (sometimes running). Through captures, betrayals, surrenders, prisons, and escapes, he continued to hold onto his dream that he would find the peace and opportunity that he had enjoyed as a boy. This was the one bright dream that kept his feet moving and his heart pumping when all else seemed hopeless. His years of resisting the oppression of his people in search of the dream that he wanted for himself, his family, and all the people of Kurdistan are an inspiration to those who feel that they are just one person fighting against giants. His story stands as a testimony of what happens when you believe you have a mission in life and you never give up hope.

Book excerpt: With ample scriptural evidence, Ditching the Checklist challenges those who seek to supplement faith in Christ alone for salvation with exercises in piety or good works. Christian security is to be found in God's promise of salvation freely given in Jesus Christ and not in putting our faith in our faith or our own righteousness. God's word alone is sufficient to save sinners. Nothing other than Jesus is required to secure those consciences anxious about God's judgment.

Book excerpt: Rolling in Ditches with Shamans charts American anthropology in the 1920s through the life and work of one of the amateur scholars of the time, Jaime de Angulo (1887?1950). Although he earned a medical degree, de Angulo chose to live on an isolated ranch in Big Sur, California, where he participated fully in the lives of the people who were his ethnographic informants. The period of his most extensive research coincides almost perfectly with the professionalization of anthropology, and de Angulo provides a link between those who are generally recognized as the most important figures of the day: Franz Boas, Alfred Kroeber, and Edward Sapir. ø The fields of salvage ethnography and linguistics, which Boas emphasized, were aimed at recording the culture, language, and myths of the Native groups before they became completely acculturated. In keeping with these dictates, de Angulo recorded data from thirty groups, mostly in California, which otherwise might have been lost. In an unusual move for that time, he also wrote fiction and poetry describing the modern lives of the people he studied, something of little interest to Boas but of great interest today. His most enduring work is Indian Tales, a fictional synthesis of myths learned from various California Indians. De Angulo?s range of interests, originality, and expertise exemplified the curiosity and brilliance of those who pioneered American anthropology at this time.
