Book Synopsis A Handbook on Low-Energy Buildings and District-Energy Systems by : L.D. Danny Harvey
Download or read book A Handbook on Low-Energy Buildings and District-Energy Systems written by L.D. Danny Harvey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of Choice Magazine - Outstanding Academic Titles for 2007 Buildings account for over one third of global energy use and associated greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. Reducing energy use by buildings is therefore an essential part of any strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and thereby lessen the likelihood of potentially catastrophic climate change. Bringing together a wealth of hard-to-obtain information on energy use and energy efficiency in buildings at a level which can be easily digested and applied, Danny Harvey offers a comprehensive, objective and critical sourcebook on low-energy buildings. Topics covered include: thermal envelopes, heating, cooling, heat pumps, HVAC systems, hot water, lighting, solar energy, appliances and office equipment, embodied energy, buildings as systems and community-integrated energy systems (cogeneration, district heating, and district cooling). The book includes exemplary buildings and techniques from North America, Europe and Asia, and combines a broad, holistic perspective with technical detail in an accessible and insightful manner.

Book Synopsis District Energy in Cities by : United Nations Publications
Download or read book District Energy in Cities written by United Nations Publications and published by UN. This book was released on 2017-03-29 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report identifies modern district energy as the most effective approach for many cities to transition to sustainable heating and cooling, by improving energy efficiency and enabling higher shares of renewables. This publication is one of the first reports to provide concrete policy, finance and technology best-practice recommendations on addressing the heating and cooling sectors in cities through energy efficiency improvements and the integration of renewables, both of which are central to the energy transition. These recommendations have been developed in collaboration with 45 champion cities, all of which use district energy, with 11 of them using it to achieve 100 per cent renewables or carbon-neutral targets.

Download or read book Central Heating written by George Steele and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Central Heating: A Design and Installation Manual is a guide to modern domestic heating systems for those involved in the trade. The book discusses the benefits of heating systems, the effects of heating, the effect of insulation on comfort and cost, and the process of heat and moisture transfer. The text also describes the concepts, possibilities, and prevention of condensation; the basic heating system; and circuit hydraulics and variation. The chemical effect of water, the selection of hardware (i.e. gas-, oil-, and solid-fuel boilers; emitters; and cylinders), temperature control, and the design of a heating system are also considered. The book tackles the relationship between boiler size, system size, capital cost and running costs, as well as the installation of heating systems. The text will be invaluable to students taking up central heating installation related courses, householders considering installing central heating, and electricians.
Book Synopsis Planning of Geothermal District Heating Systems by : Alberto Piatti
Download or read book Planning of Geothermal District Heating Systems written by Alberto Piatti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1992-09-30 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geothermal waters, hot enough to provide direct heating, are available in many parts of the world. Some are exploited already but many more are only now being considered, as planners begin to recognize the environmental benefits of this unfamiliar energy resource. The relative economic benefits are more marginal, however, and a successful scheme requires careful design and optimization. The nature of geothermal resources imposes special conditions which may be unfamiliar to many plant engineers. In addition, many different approaches are possible, depending on the characteristics of the resource and the user and on the operator's requirements. Must the scheme be optimized for energy recovery or for financial return, or is it more important that it should remain profitable over as wide a range of conditions as possible? This book, written by professional plant engineers with first-hand experience, is designed to guide plant engineers through the different options and to help in this optimization process.

Book Synopsis Shaping an Inclusive Energy Transition by : Margot P. C. Weijnen
Download or read book Shaping an Inclusive Energy Transition written by Margot P. C. Weijnen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-06-24 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book makes a case for a socially inclusive energy transition and illustrates how engineering and public policy professionals can contribute to shaping an inclusive energy transition, building on a socio-technical systems engineering approach. Accomplishing a net-zero greenhouse gas emissions economy in 2050 is a daunting challenge. This book explores the challenges of the energy transition from the perspectives of technological innovation, public policy, social values and ethics. It elaborates on two particular gaps in the design of public policy interventions focused on decarbonization of the energy system and discusses how both could be remedied. First, the siloed organization of public administration fails to account for the many interdependencies between the energy sector, the mobility system, digital infrastructure and the built environment. Cross-sector coordination of policies and policy instruments is needed to avoid potentially adverse effects upon society and the economy, which may hamper the energy transition rather than accelerate it. Second, energy and climate policies pay insufficient attention to the social values at stake in the energy transition. In addressing these gaps, this book intends to inspire decision makers engaged in the energy transition to embrace the transition as an opportunity to bring a more inclusive society into being.
