Subcommittee on the Geochemical Environment in Relation to Health and Disease and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: An attempt is made to identify relationships between the geochemical environment and certain diseases: cancer, cardiovascular disease and urolithiasis. The sources of trace elements and simple inorganic compounds are discussed, as well as radioactive elements. Water quality and soil types are analyzed and related to plant foods and the bioavailability of trace elements. There are plants that accumulate certain elements, such as selenium, fluorine and zinc. Phytates are an example of the interaction of substances within plants. The effects on food of processing, sewage--recycling and coal fly ash are considered. Data and maps show the links of environmental factors to the diseases.

Download or read book Trace Elements in Health written by J. Rose and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2016-07-29 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trace Elements in Health: A Review of Current Issues presents how some metals affect health, growth, and well-being of man and animals in a variety of ways, when the amounts involved are excessive or deficient. This book discusses the various aspects of trace elements in three points of view. First, the toxicological and beneficial properties are described in eleven chapters. Chapter 1 deals with general toxicological properties, while Chapters 2 to 11 reviews advances in the field of elements that include cadmium, copper, indium, thallium, lead, mercury, molybdenum, selenium, zinc, and transuranic series. The next chapters focus on the genetic effects, health of children, and birth rate problems related to trace elements. Finally, this text concludes with a discussion on the role of trace elements in agriculture, focusing on requirements of plants and animals, consequences of excesses and imbalances of trace elements in soils, and animal diets. This publication is valuable to veterinarians and practitioners of disciplines such as physiology, dietetics, and medicine.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trace metals occur as natural constituents of the earth's crust, and are ever present constituents of soils, natural waters and living matter. The biological significance of this disparate assemblage of elements has gradually been uncovered during the twentieth century; the resultant picture is one of ever-increasing complexity. Several of these elements have been demonstrated to be essential to the functions of living organisms, others appear to only interact with living matter in a toxic manner, whilst an ever-decreasing number do not fall conveniently into either category. When the interactions between trace metals and plants are considered, one must take full account of the known chemical properties of each element. Consideration must be given to differences in chemical reactivity, solubility and to interactions with other inorganic and organic molecules. A clear understanding of the basic chemical properties of an element of interest is an essential pre-requisite to any subsequent consideration of its biological significance. Due consideration to basic chemical considerations is a theme which runs through the collection of chapters in both volumes.

Book Synopsis The Natural Geochemistry Of Our Environment by : David H Speidel
Download or read book The Natural Geochemistry Of Our Environment written by David H Speidel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Natural Geochemistry of Our Environment shows that the Earth is a water world, whose water is transformed readily from the solid to the liquid to the gaseous state. This book, is an outgrowth of a report prepared in 1979 by Drs. Speidel and Agnew for the U.S. Science, Research, and Technology Subcommittee, provides just such a background to enables one to comprehend the natural system and the way that human activities affect that environment.

Book Synopsis Earth Materials and Health by : National Research Council
Download or read book Earth Materials and Health written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-05-09 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A range of natural earth materials, like arsenic or fluoride, have long been linked to significant human health effects. Improved understanding of the pervasive and complex interactions between earth materials and human health will require creative collaborations between earth scientists and public health professionals. At the request of the National Science Foundation, U.S. Geological Survey, and National Aeronautics and Space Administration, this National Research Council book assesses the current state of knowledge at the interface between the earth sciences and public health disciplines. The book identifies high-priority areas for collaborative research, including understanding the transport and bioavailability of potentially hazardous earth materials, using risk-based scenarios to mitigate the public health effects of natural hazards under current and future climate regimes, and understanding the health risks that result from disturbance of earth systems. Geospatial information - geological maps for earth scientists and epidemiological data for public health professionals - is identified as one of the essential integrative tools that is fundamental to the activities of both communities. The book also calls for increased data sharing between agencies to promote interdisciplinary research without compromising privacy.
