Book excerpt: Adult and juvenile fishes are usually capable of detecting and avoiding or withstanding most of the environmental effects of navigation traffic. However, since larval fishes are less capable of avoidance movements and more susceptible to environmental disturbances, they can be negatively affected by navigation traffic. Reported direct effects of traffic on larval fishes include turbulence, shear forces, currents, hull and propeller impacts, abrasion, wave and drawdown effects, and resuspension of sediments. Indirect effects of navigation traffic include releases of fuel, oils, exhaust gases, and other wastes associated with the operation of each tow; the construction and operation of more or larger lock and dam facilities needed for increased traffic; and the greater risk of catastrophic spills of toxic materials. Laboratory experiments were designed to investigate the effects of selected disturbances (turbulence, resuspension of sediment, and atmospheric exposure) on four species of larval fishes: paddlefish, channel catfish, grass carp, and common carp. Keywords: Commercial navigation traffic; Environmental impact; Laboratory simulation; Shipping; Physical effects studies. (kt).

Because aquatic systems are characterized by strong heterogeneity in biotic and abiotic conditions along a vertical gradient, the vertical distribution of larval fish can profoundly affect their growth and survival. In large systems such as the Great Lakes, vertical distribution patterns can also influence dispersal and ultimately settlement events. Despite its importance during early life stages, little is known about vertical distribution patterns of larval fish in Lake Michigan. My objective was to describe the vertical distribution of the larval fish community in pelagic waters of Lake Michigan and determine which biotic and abiotic factors most strongly influence their vertical distribution. Additionally with controlled laboratory experiments I sought to determine how two of these factors (light intensity and prey density) influence the foraging success of a fish species with a pelagic larval stage, yellow perch (Perca flavescens). To determine vertical distribution, the upper 27 meters of the water column was divided into six discrete depth bins where larval fish and zooplankton were collected, in addition to recording light intensity, and temperature. Larval fish from 5 species were collected during the study: alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus), bloater (Coregonus hoyi), burbot (Lota lota), deepwater sculpin (Myoxocephalus thompsonii), and yellow perch (Perca flavecens). Among the five species, I observed three general patterns of larval distribution. Alewife and yellow perch larvae were restricted to the epilimnion, deepwater sculpin were restricted to the hypolimnion, and bloater and burbot were collected throughout the upper 27 m of the water column, and exhibited diel differences in distribution patterns. My analysis elucidates the importance of abiotic over biotic factors in the structuring of larval fish vertical distribution in Lake Michigan, as temperature was shown to influence the distribution of most species, while density of crustacean zooplankton did not. The inter-specific differences of vertical distribution observed among the 5 species collected have important consequences for dispersal, settlement, and recruitment variability. In the laboratory I examined the influence of light intensity on foraging success and prey selection of larval yellow perch at both high (150 zooplankton/L) and low (25 zooplankton/L) prey densities, with a mixture of zooplankton taxa common to lakes containing yellow perch. In addition to light intensity and prey density, the effect of ontogeny of yellow perch larvae was examined by using fish ranging from 9 to 15 mm. The results of my study indicated that larval yellow perch are well adapted to feed at a wide range of light intensities, as there was no difference in foraging success between light intensities ranging from 0.1 to 60 ℗æmol s-1 m-2 PAR. Increasing prey density from 25 to 150 (zooplankton/L) significantly improved the foraging success of larval yellow perch. However, the influence of prey density on foraging success of larval yellow perch was dependent on fish length, with improved foraging success with increased prey density occurring only for larger larvae. Overall, prey selection by larval fish was influenced by light intensity, prey density, and fish length, but the set factors which influenced selection for specific prey types differed. The results of this study combined with evidence from other field and laboratory work, highlight the need for a better understanding of the influence of prey density on foraging success throughout ontogeny.

Book excerpt: The St. Johns River is the site of proposed water withdrawal projects to supply water to Florida's growing human population. Larval fish are directly killed by water withdrawal. Knowing where larval fish are concentrated spatially and seasonally allows planners and managers to better locate water withdrawal structures, and put in place water-management strategies to reduce the negative impact to fish populations. While limited sampling for American Shad (Alosa sapidissima) eggs and early larvae has been done in the past, no intensive year-round analysis of ichthyoplankton in the middle St. Johns River has been performed. This study implemented an intense sampling regimen in the middle St. Johns River to determine: i) the temporal and spatial patterns of larval fish abundance and distribution; ii) the effects of environmental variables on the ichthyoplankton assemblage structure and spatial distribution; and iii) the changes in American Shad (A. sapidissima) and Blueback Herring (A. aestivalis) larval abundance and distribution between 1969-1973 and 2008-2009. Six regions in the middle St. Johns River, FL, where water withdrawal structures have been proposed, were sampled using 0.5 m diameter ichthyoplankton nets towed for 10 minutes in a step-oblique manner to sample surface, mid-, and bottom water. Fixed sites, upriver and downriver from the proposed withdrawal structure, were selected for a total of 31 sampling sites. Daytime sampling was done weekly and bi-weekly from February 2008 through September 2009; once a month night sampling took place at the three central locations. A total of 8,071 eggs, 708,050 larvae, and 19,649 juveniles or adults were identified and measured. A total of 44 taxa were captured, but the ichthyoplankton assemblage was dominated by Gizzard Shad (35.4%), Threadfin Shad (34.2%), Clown Goby (7.1%), Naked Goby (7%), Black Crappie (2.9%), Bluegill (2.2%), Tidewater Silverside (2.1%), and American Shad (1.9%). Lake Monroe near Sanford, FL and the river just upriver (i.e., the SR46 location) had the highest larval collections (22% and 38.5% respectively), and were dominated by Gizzard and Threadfin Shad and the two goby species. These two sampling locations are downriver of the hypereutrophic Lake Jesup, and are the recipients of brackish water from relic saltwater deposits. Upriver sites were the most depauperate, with the narrow, muddy, sparsely-vegetated river near the State Road 50 bridge having the fewest larvae overall (5.1%), but containing >92% of all American Shad captured over the course of this project. Almost all spawning activity occurred from late winter through mid summer. Historic collections gauging American Shad reproductive output provided the opportunity to compare data from the modem 2008-2009 study and river herring data from 1953, 1965, and 1969-1973. Blueback Herring were collected over a narrower range of the SJR in 2008-2009 than in the earlier studies. American Shad spawning shifted upriver to the State Road 50 locations. This shift may be a response to annual water levels during the peak spawning season, with downstream spawning when river levels are high and upstream spawning when river levels are low. These results show that water withdrawal structures in either the river section upstream of Lake Monroe or near the State Road 50 bridge would be potentially detrimental to American Shad and Blueback Herring (NOAA Species of Concern) stocks. The remaining fish species have broad reproductive peaks throughout the sampling region, and would not be impacted as severely by water withdrawal. For all sites and species, seasonal water withdrawals in fall and winter for storage in municipal reservoirs, whenever river discharge is highest and spawning is least, may be the best strategy to minimize ichthyoplankton entrainment and negative impacts on fish communities.

Book excerpt: A thorough analysis of public policy and the Clean Water Act'seffect on water quality in the U.S. Using water quality data and historical records from the past 60years, this book presents the measured impact of the 1972 CleanWater Act on domestic waterways-ecologically, politically, andeconomically. Municipal Wastewater Treatment supports thehypothesis that the Act's regulation of wastewater treatmentprocesses at publicly owned treatment works (POTW) and industrialfacilities has achieved significant success. The authors' case ispresented in: * Background information on the history of water pollution controland water quality management * Chapters addressing long-term trends in biochemical oxygen demandloadings from municipal wastewater plants and the "worst-case"dissolved oxygen levels in waterways downstream of point sourcesbefore and after the Clean Water Act * Nine case study assessments of long-term trends of pollutantloading water quality and environmental resources associated withPOTW discharges Using long-term trends in dissolved oxygen as the key indicator ofwater quality improvements, this book provides a detailedretrospective analysis of the effectiveness of the water pollutioncontrol policies and regulations of the 1972 Clean Water Act. Thesuccesses of the Act that have been achieved over the past 30 yearsare placed in the historical context of the "Great SanitaryAwakening" of the 19th century and changes in public policies forwater supply and water pollution control that have evolved duringthe 20th century to protect public health and the intrinsic valueof aquatic resources. Case study sites include the ConnecticutRiver, Hudson-Raritan Estuary, Delaware Estuary, Potomac Estuary,Upper Chattahoochee River, Ohio River, Upper Mississippi River, andWillamette River. Complete with end-of-chapter summaries and conclusions, MunicipalWastewater Treatment: Evaluating Improvements in National WaterQuality is an essential book for engineers, scientists, regulators, and consultants involved in water quality management and wastewatertreatment, as well as students of environmental engineering, environmental science, and public policy.
