Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caddis flies are important indicators of environmental quality in aquatic biotopes. This Atlas is the first book which enables the identification of the entire European caddis fly fauna since McLachlan’s Revision and Synopsis of 1874-1880. Identification of European caddis flies has proved difficult as a result of the widely scattered literature, and has therefore been a matter for specialists for more than hundred years. This Second Edition of The Atlas of European Trichoptera contains over 1400 species which means an increase of 25% since the first edition of 1983. Identification of specimens is one of the most difficult tasks in Zoology. This volume presents information which will enable the reader to develop his own opinions and will also help him reach decisions concerning the accuracy of his own results. The identification of specimens is undertaken by comparing the detailed drawings of the most important characteristics of all species known in Europe, the Mediterranean countries north of the Sahara, the Canary islands, Madeira, the Azores islands and the adjacent eastern regions including the Arab Peninsula and Iran. The fauna of Turkistan and Siberia is partially included. Explanations of the drawings are provided mainly by symbols which enable the use of this book independent of language. This concept has been proved successful in University courses. The introductory chapters are in English, German and French. Should a reader not understand any of these languages, the translation of these few pages, including the pages of explanations, will provide sufficient understanding for the entire book.

Book excerpt: In a very short time - only about six years since the Mapping European Butterflies project was announced or some seven years since the preparations were started - the results in the form of The Distribution Atlas of European Butterflies can now be presented to the public. The database of the Atlas consists of 228,931 data records provided by 250 recorders from all over Europe or extracted from all the major national, regional and private data banks. The Atlas contains about 450 dot distribution maps of all the European butterflies. For the first time ever a distribution atlas of European butterflies will be available and at the same time Europe will be the first continent ever to have all its butterfly species plotted on precise and comprehensive distribution maps. Apart from providing significant species specific chronological data for taxonomists and biogeographers, the prime purpose of the Atlas is to aid and promote the conservation of European butterflies. The analysis and evaluation of the distribution data contained in the Atlas will facilitate the identification of priorities in selecting species and areas for European significance for convervation purposes. Thus, The Distribution Atlas of European Butterflies constitutes a major contribution towards the advancement of our knowledge of European butterflies.

Book excerpt: Identification and Ecology of Freshwater Arthropods in the Mediterranean Basin covers the entire Mediterranean basin, including parts of Europe, Asia, Africa and the Mediterranean islands, but excluding other biogeographic locations with Mediterranean climates located outside the region. The book provides an extensive description of the taxonomy and ecology of aquatic arthropods encountered in lentic and lotic habitats, as well as in less studied underground and estuarine habitats. It offers expanded taxonomic identification keys to major groups of arthropods with a description of their ecology and distribution. Keys for insects include aquatic larval stages and water-dwelling adults of Coleoptera and Heteroptera. Additional sections focus on taxa that can be encountered in adjacent brackish and estuary ecosystems as long as the taxon primarily occurs in freshwaters. This is a much-needed, comprehensive resource on the taxonomy and ecology of freshwater arthropods with an introduction to recent molecular tools for identifications. It will be particularly useful for freshwater ecologists, limnologists, environmentalists and students in the ecological sciences. Presents taxonomic keys to genera and species to the majority of aquatic arthropod families Provides coverage of all freshwater ecosystems of the Mediterranean basin, with case studies and examples Includes numerous photographs of the aquatic arthropods described in the chapters Covers the ecology and taxonomy of organisms living in more traditionally studied lakes and streams as well as in less studied underground and estuarine habitats

Book excerpt: After providing a historical overview, this book highlights the current state of knowledge, gaps in our knowledge, recent findings and future prospects with regard to the biological, chemical, geological, and geographical specificities of the Plitvice lakes in Croatia. The Plitvice lakes are a unique environment and home to tufa – a type of calcium carbonate deposit that provides a substrate for living organisms. Its formation process has resulted in a vastly diverse environment of lakes, streams and riparian habitats. The Plitvice lakes have, therefore, historically been both an inspiration and a challenge for scientists, nature enthusiasts, artists, etc. Today, the lakes continue to offer an in-situ laboratory for new discoveries in all aspects of freshwater science. As in most habitats, global changes have become an important issue. Since the Plitvice lakes have remained largely untouched by direct human impacts and have a long historical tradition in research, they represent an ideal subject for assessing the effects of global changes in a temperate freshwater system. This book provides an ecological overview of the biogeochemical processes at work in a unique and virtually pristine European freshwater tufa-forming environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book surveys the frontier of scientific river research and provides examples to guide management towards a sustainable future of riverine ecosystems. Principal structures and functions of the biogeosphere of rivers are explained; key threats are identified, and effective solutions for restoration and mitigation are provided. Rivers are among the most threatened ecosystems of the world. They increasingly suffer from pollution, water abstraction, river channelisation and damming. Fundamental knowledge of ecosystem structure and function is necessary to understand how human acitivities interfere with natural processes and which interventions are feasible to rectify this. Modern water legislation strives for sustainable water resource management and protection of important habitats and species. However, decision makers would benefit from more profound understanding of ecosystem degradation processes and of innovative methodologies and tools for efficient mitigation and restoration. The book provides best-practice examples of sustainable river management from on-site studies, European-wide analyses and case studies from other parts of the world. This book will be of interest to researchers in the field of aquatic ecology, river system functioning, conservation and restoration, to postgraduate students, to institutions involved in water management, and to water related industries.

Book excerpt: This book series provides comprehensive information on distribution and ecological preferences of European freshwater organisms. The first volume summarises the current knowledge on European caddisflies (Trichoptera), based on the evaluation of over 1,400 literature references. The distribution within the European ecoregions (including Turkey and the Caucasian region) is given for 1,426 European Trichoptera species and subspecies, categorised into 136 genera and 23 families. A wide variety of ecological preferences is presented as numerical codes, including feeding types, habitat and current preferences, temperature and altitude preferences, life duration and flight periods, and the response to environmental stress. The compilation is a unique tool for analysing freshwater biota, both for basic and applied purposes such as ecosystem monitoring and the implementation of European directives in the field of environmental protection.
