Book excerpt: The Miami-Inspiration porphyry Cu-Mo deposit is associated with a Late Cretaceous/Early Paleocene pluton in the southwestern North American porphyry Cu province. Hypogene Cu and Mo mineralization in the Miami-Inspiration deposit is related to porphyritic intrusions of the Schultze Granite (67-61 Ma) and is manifested as vein- and veinlet-hosted and disseminated sulfides in the Schultze Granite and the ~1.7 Ga Pinal Schist. The deposit has been rotated and extended by several generations of mid-Tertiary normal faults which have tilted originally shallower forms of alteration toward the northeast while deeper forms are exposed in the southwest portions of the deposit. Map patterns show that pervasive sulfide-poor potassic alteration (K-feldspar-quartz-biotite ± pyrite) in the southwest and center of the deposit is in contact with sulfide-bearing potassic (K-feldspar-quartz-biotite-chalcopyrite-pyrite) and transitional potassic-sericitic alteration (stable K-feldspar-sericite-chalcopyrite-pyrite) to the north and northeast. Early dark micaceous veins are present in strongly localized pockets in barren potassic alteration, and gray-green sericite veins are present in the sulfide-bearing potassic zone. Sericitic alteration (quartz-sericite-pyrite) postdates and overprints potassic and transitional potassic-sericitic alteration, as sericite pervasively replaces hydrothermal K-feldspar. Propylitic alteration (chlorite-magnetite-epidote-actinolite-calcite) is observed in the northeastern portions of the deposit, while coarse muscovite (“greisen”) alteration (muscovite-quartz-K-feldspar ± pyrite ± chalcopyrite) overprints potassic and barren potassic alteration and mineralization in the southwestern parts of the system. Copper mineralization (chalcopyrite and minor bornite) is mostly concentrated in the sulfide-bearing potassic, transitional potassic-sericitic, and sericitic alteration zones. Vein-hosted molybdenum mineralization in quartz + molybdenite veins and veinlets is common where potassic alteration is overprinted by sericitic alteration. These interpreted alteration and mineralization patterns are similar to other quartz monzodioritic-granitic porphyry Cu-Mo systems in the Globe-Miami district and the southwestern porphyry province.

Book excerpt: In order to improve our understanding of poorly studied Mexican Porphyry Copper Deposits in the SW regional metallogenetic province, a detailed study of the hydrothermal fluid evolution of La Caridad porphyry copper-molybdenum deposit, and its connection to a high sulfidation epithermal deposit, was performed using oxygen, hydrogen and sulfur stable isotopes combined with fluid inclusion studies. In addition, U-Pb and Re-Os geochronology from La Caridad, Milpillas and El Arco porphyry deposits were performed to constrain the timing of mineralization and magmatism in northwest Mexico. Uranium-lead zircon ages from La Caridad suggest a short period of magmatism, between 55.5 and 53.0 Ma. Re-Os molybdenite ages from potassic and phyllic hydrothermal veins yielded identical ages within error, 53.6" 0.3 Ma and 53.8" 0.3 Ma, respectively. Four stages of hypogene alteration and mineralization are recognized at La Caridad porphyry copper deposit. The isotopic composition of the water in equilibrium with hydrothermal alteration minerals is consistent with highly evaporated lacustrine waters mixed with magmatic waters or vapor separated from magmatic fluids, however, sulfur isotopes and fluid inclusions data support the lacustrine-magmatic water hypotesis. Milpillas porphyry copper deposit in the Cananea Mining District, yielded a crystallization age of 63.9" 1.3 Ma. Two Re-Os molybdenite ages yielded an identical age of 63.1" 0.4 Ma, Suggesting a restricted period of mineralization. Re-Os data indicate that mineralization in Cananea District, spanned 4̃ m.y. in three discrete pulses at 5̃9 Ma, 6̃1 Ma and 6̃3Ma. El Arco porphyry copper deposit, Baja California, Mexico, yielded a Middle Jurassic crystallization age (U-Pb) of 164.7" 6.7 Ma and a Re-Os mineralization age of 164.1" 0.4 Ma and not 1̃00 Ma as previously determinated. Porphyry copper deposits in Mexico range in age from 164 Ma to 54 Ma and the mineralization in Sonora state ocurred in two different periods, but magmatism overlaps in space and time.

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The White Pine Fork Mo porphyry has an estimated resource of 16 Mt of Mo at 0.1% Mo. The host intrusions are K-feldspar- and quartz-porphyritic monzo- to syeno-granites characterised by LREE enrichment, fractionated HREEs and negative Nb, Ta, Sr and Ti anomalies, consistent with a subarc mantle melt source. The granites also have an adakitic geochemical signature. A U-Pb age for zircon from a clast in the mineralized breccia pipe at White Pine yielded an age of 26.52±0.42 Ma, which falls within the error of the White Pine intrusion age of 26.61±0.24 Ma. Re-Os ages for duplicate samples of the Mo-mineralised quartz breccia are 30.21±0.14 and 29.84±0.15 Ma, which correlate with the age of the Little Cottonwood stock rather than the host intrusion and may represent Re-Os inheritance. In contrast, Buckingham Mo (-Cu) porphyry has an estimated resource of 1,000 Mt of Mo at 0.1% Mo and is hosted in Cretaceous K-feldspar- and quartz-porphyritic granites. Four feldspar- and quartz-porphyritic granites in the area were dated using LA-ICP-MS U-Pb of zircon and yielded ages of 38.68±0.53, 39.28±0.58, 40.76±0.41, and 40.81±0.51 Ma and therefore unrelated to the Buckingham deposit, and instead are correlated with Tertiary magmatism associated with Au skarns in the nearby Battle Mountain district. The Tertiary intrusions are feldspar- and quartz porphyritic granites. Primitive mantle-normalized geochemistry of both suites of intrusive rocks have LREE enrichment, fractionated HREE, negative Nb, Ta and Ti anomalies and a slight enrichment of Zr and Hf, consistent with a subarc mantle source for both suites. The most prominent alteration in both systems is phyllic alteration comprising an assemblage of white micas, quartz and pyrite. Potassic alteration was also observed at the White Pine Fork Mo breccia pipe and kaolinite and chlorite observed in SWIR data suggest advanced argillic alteration around the Buckingham system. These petrographic observations are substantiated by the whole rock geochemistry. The potassic, phyllic, and possible advanced argillic alteration were mapped out by the absolute values of trace elements. The trace element geochemistry of quartz and pyrite can be used to fingerprint deposit types and as vectors towards mineralisation in alteration systems around ore deposits. At White Pine Fork, the hydrothermal quartz is characterised by higher Ti and As than the igneous quartz. The Li content of hydrothermal quartz is greater near the centre of the White Pine Fork deposit than in its margins. At Buckingham, quartz in the breccia cement at the centre of the deposit shows the highest concentration of Al, Li, K, Ca, As, and Sb, and metals (i.e. Cu, Fe, Zn, and Pb), whereas the igneous and sedimentary quartz shows the highest Ti values. The high values indicate that the primary Ti contents were not subjected to recalibration during hydrothermal alteration. The Al and Sb contents of quartz decrease away from the centre of deposit at Buckingham. This trend was not observed at White Pine Fork.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Botija Cu-Mo-Au porphyry deposit is located in the Cobre Panamá mining district, which contains several deposits with a global measure and indicated and inferred resource of 14.8 MT of Cu. These deposits are associated with the Cerro Petaquilla batholith, which has U/Pb zircon ages of 26-33 Ma (Whattam et al., 2012; Baker et al., 2016). The Botija deposit is an elongate tabular body striking northeast and dipping 20-40° N and measures 2 km (length) x 1 km (width) x 600 m (height) in size. The deposit is hosted in andesite, the equigranular Petaquilla granodiorite, and a younger crowded porphyritic granodiorite with 15-50 vol.% groundmass of quartz and K-feldspar. Phenocrysts include plagioclase, hornblende ± K-feldspar and occasionally 5-15 vol.% rounded quartz eyes. Ore is characterized by Cu-Fe sulfides (chalcopyrite > bornite) that is dominantly disseminated, but also present in magmatic-hydrothermal quartz veins. Systematic vein measurements at Botija demonstrate that copper ores are spatially associated with a quartz vein density >0.5 vol.%; these veins have two modes of structural orientation (azimuth of strike/right-hand dip) of 233/50°NW and 295/45°NE. Most similar early quartz veins are emplaced along near-vertical hydrofractures in numerous porphyry deposits globally. The present dip of these quartz veins suggest that the veins and the Botija deposit have been moderately tilted about 40° south-southeast after mineralization. Typical potassic and sericitic alteration and zonation is present in Botija, however, a late overprint of chlorite and zeolite has obscured much of the original magmatic hydrothermal alteration footprint. Although the Botija deposit exhibits many of the common porphyry copper features, its geometry is atypical with abrupt spatial transitions (

This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Situated in northwest B.C Canada, the Southwest Zone Cu-Au breccia-centered deposit is one of twelve mineralized centers in the Galore Creek alkalic porphyry district. Formed in an island arc-setting outboard of ancestral North America in the lateTriassic, deposits in the Galore Creek district have a combined measured and indicated resource of 785.7 Mt at 0.52 per cent Cu, 0.29 g/t Au and 4.87g/t Ag. Mineralisation in the Southwest Zone is centered in narrow hydrothermally cemented breccias. Composite dikes of megacrystic orthoclase-phyric syenite and megacrystic orthoclase and plagioclase-phyric monzonite are cut by polylithic, poorly sorted pebblecobble clast size matrix-rich breccias. Hydrothermally cemented breccias, characterised by the cement (infill) assemblage phlogopite " K-feldspar " magnetite " anhydrite " diopside " suiphide, overprint the western contact between matrix-bearing breccias and megacrystic porphyries. Coeval with cemented breccia formation, intrusions of biotite phyric monzodiorite occur at the matrix-bearing breccia-wall rock contact and in the matrix-bearing breccias. Biotite-phyric monzodiorite and the principal cemented breccia domains are co-spatial and syn-Cu-Au. Drilling has outlined a zone of>0.3% hypogene Cu approximately 20-100m thick, 500m wide and 400m in length that strikes 100, dips 45-60°S, and has a semiellipsoidal morphology. This mineralisation is coincident with potassic (stage D) alteration and infill. Cu-poor, diopside-dominated (calc-[potassic]) alteration formed contemporaneously with, and locally flanks, potassic-D infill. Sulphide minerals are zoned from a core of chalcopyrite-bomite, to chalcopyrite>pyrite, to pyrite>chalcopyrite out to pyrite only. Garnet-bearing peripheral propylitic alteration overlaps with a pyrite and Au-halo and locally overprints potassic and calc-Q, otassic) assemblages. Based on electron microprobe analysis, systematic spatial variations in Ti-content and Fe3/Fe2 of infill biotite are evi.

Book excerpt: Post-mineral structural dismemberment of the western and northwestern edge of the Cananea porphyry copper district has controlled, to some degree, the distribution and extent of secondary copper mineralization of deposits in that part of the district. Geologic mapping, detailed analysis of basin fill and pediment gravel sedimentology, and synthesis of existing structural and mineralogical information for the Mariquita deposit in particular was employed to better understand the post-mineral structural history of the northwestern Cananea district. The overall goal is to place some constraints on the relative timing between unroofing and enrichment of the deposits within the district.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the last decade, the high and continuing demand for gold has prompted a global gold rush on a scale never before seen, not even in the heady days of Ballarat, California and the Yukon. Gold is being sought on every continent and, with very few exceptions, in every country around the world. Such interest and fierce competition has demanded considerable innovation and improvement in exploration techniques paralleled by a rapid expansion of the geological database and consequent genetic modelling for the many different types of gold deposits now recognized. This proliferation of data has swamped the literature and left explorationist and academic alike unable to sift more than a small proportion of the accumulating information. This new book represents an attempt to address this major problem by providing succinct syntheses ofall major aspects ofgold metallogeny and exploration, ranging from the chemical distribution of gold in the Earth's crust, and the hydrothermal chemistry of gold, to Archaean and Phanerozoic lode deposits, epithermal environments, chemical sediments, and placer deposits, and culminates in chapters devoted to geochemical and geophysical exploration, and the economics of gold deposits. Each chapter is written by geoscientists who are acknowledged internationally in their respective fields, thus guaranteeing a broad yet up-to-date coverage. In addition, each chapter is accompanied by reference lists which provide readers with access to the most pertinent and useful publications.
