Book excerpt: This research proposes a methodology to solve distributed optimization problems where quasi-autonomous decision entities directly interact with each other for partial information sharing. In the distributed system we study the quasi-autonomy arising from the assumption that each decision entity has complete and unique responsibility for a subset of decision variables. However, when solving a decision problem locally, consideration is given to how the local decisions affect overall system performance such that close-to-optimal solutions are obtained among all participating decision entities. Partial information sharing refers to the fact that no entity has the complete information access needed to solve the optimization problem globally. This condition hinders the direct application of traditional optimization solution methods. In this research, it is further assumed that direct interaction among the decision entities is allowed. This compensates for the lack of complete information access with the interactive exchange of non-private information. The methodology is tested in different application contexts: manufacturing capacity allocation, single machine scheduling, and jobshop scheduling. The experimental results show that the proposed method generates close-to optimal solutions in the tested problem settings.

Book excerpt: This book offers a valuable reference guide for researchers in distributed optimization and for senior undergraduate and graduate students alike. Focusing on the natures and functions of agents, communication networks and algorithms in the context of distributed optimization for networked control systems, this book introduces readers to the background of distributed optimization; recent developments in distributed algorithms for various types of underlying communication networks; the implementation of computation-efficient and communication-efficient strategies in the execution of distributed algorithms; and the frameworks of convergence analysis and performance evaluation. On this basis, the book then thoroughly studies 1) distributed constrained optimization and the random sleep scheme, from an agent perspective; 2) asynchronous broadcast-based algorithms, event-triggered communication, quantized communication, unbalanced directed networks, and time-varying networks, from a communication network perspective; and 3) accelerated algorithms and stochastic gradient algorithms, from an algorithm perspective. Finally, the applications of distributed optimization in large-scale statistical learning, wireless sensor networks, and for optimal energy management in smart grids are discussed.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, several algorithms for distributed model predictive control over digital communication networks with parallel computation are developed and analyzed. Distributed control aims at efficiently controlling large scale dynamical systems which consist of interconnected dynamical systems by means of communicating local controllers. Such distributed control problems arise in applications such as chemical processes, formation control, and control of power grids. In distributed model predictive control the underlying idea is to solve a large scale model predictive control problem in a distributed fashion in order to achieve faster computation and better robustness against local failures. Distributed model predictive control often heavily relies on frequent communication between the local model predictive controllers. However, a digital communication network may induce uncertainties such as a communication delays, especially if the load on the communication network is high. One topic of this thesis is to develop a distributed model predictive control algorithm for subsystems interconnected by constraints and common control goals which is robust with respect to time-varying communication delays.

Book excerpt: We all hope for the best but sometimes, one must plan for ways of dealing with the worst-case scenarios, especially in a network with adversaries. This dissertation illustrates a detailed description of distributed optimization algorithms over a network of agents, in which some agents are adversarial. The model considered is such that adversarial agents act to subvert the objective of the network. The algorithms presented in this dissertation are solved via gradient-based distributed optimization algorithm and the effects of the adversarial agents on the convergence of the algorithm to the optimal solution are characterized. The analyses presented establish conditions under which the adversarial agents have enough information to obstruct convergence to the optimal solution by the non-adversarial agents. The adversarial agents act by using up network bandwidth, forcing the communication of the non-adversarial agents to be constrained. A distributed gradient-based optimization algorithm is explored in which the non-adversarial agents exchange quantized information with one another using fixed and adaptive quantization scheme. Additionally, convergence of the solution to a neighborhood of the optimal solution is proved in the communication-constrained environment amidst the presence of adversarial agents.

Book excerpt: The book gives an introduction to networked control systems and describes new modeling paradigms, analysis methods for event-driven, digitally networked systems, and design methods for distributed estimation and control. Networked model predictive control is developed as a means to tolerate time delays and packet loss brought about by the communication network. In event-based control the traditional periodic sampling is replaced by state-dependent triggering schemes. Novel methods for multi-agent systems ensure complete or clustered synchrony of agents with identical or with individual dynamics. The book includes numerous references to the most recent literature. Many methods are illustrated by numerical examples or experimental results.

Book excerpt: Think of the following situation: A project yielding a gross profit of 100 is offered to two firms. The project can only be conducted by a cooperation of the two firms. No firm is able to conduct the project alone. In order to receive the project the firms have to agree on the allocation of the gross profit. Each of both firms has an alternative project it conducts in case the joint project is not realized. The profitability of an allocation of the joint gross profit for a firm depends on the gross profit from its alternative project. The gross profit from an alternative project can be either 0 (low alternative value) or O
