Book excerpt: Wireless sensor networks continue to get tremendous popularity, as evidenced by the increasing number of applications for these networks. The limiting factors of the sensor nodes, such as their finite energy supplies and their moderate processing abilities, as well as the unreliable wireless medium restrict the performance of wireless sensor networks. Energy efficient communication is a critical design objective for wireless sensor networks which are usually highly energy constrained. To achieve these goals, this thesis describes a distributed approach for solving several optimization problems in wireless sensor network. The idea of distributed signal processing relies on the divide-and-conquer paradigm, which is often used in multiprocessor computers. According to the divide-and-conquer paradigm, a problem is divided into multiple sub-problems of smaller size. Every sensor solves each subproblem by using the same algorithm, and the solution to the original problem is obtained by combining the outputs from the different sensors. By designing appropriate communication protocols and collaborative computational schemes, sensors operate as distributed adaptive filters and generate the desired result. In an incremental mode of cooperation, information flows in a sequential manner from one node to the adjacent node. This mode of operation requires a cyclic pattern of collaboration among the nodes. In a diffusion implementation, on the other hand, each node communicates with all its neighbours as dictated by the network topology. READ FULL ABSTRACT IN THE DOCUMENT.

Book excerpt: Wireless Sensor Network Technologies for Information Explosion Era The amount and value of information available due to rapid spread of information technology is exploding. Typically, large enterprises have approximately a petabyte of operational data stored in hundreds of data repositories supporting thousands of applications. Data storage volumes grow in excess of 50% annually. This growth is expected to continue due to vast proliferation of existing infor- tion systems and the introduction of new data sources. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) represent one of the most notable examples of such new data sources. In recent few years, various types of WSNs have been deployed and the amount of information generated by wireless sensors increases rapidly. The information - plosion requires establishing novel data processing and communication techniques for WSNs. This volume aims to cover both theoretical and practical aspects - lated to this challenge, and it explores directions for future research to enable ef- cient utilization of WSNs in the information-explosion era. The book is organized in three main parts that consider (1) technical issues of WSNs, (2) the integration of multiple WSNs, and (3) the development of WSNs systems and testbeds for conducting practical experiments. Each part consists of three chapters.

Book excerpt: [ANGLÈS] Real-time detection and extraction of visual features in wireless sensor networks is a challenging task due to its computational complexity and the limited processing power of the nodes. A promising approach is to distribute the workload to other nodes of the network by delegating the processing of different regions of the image to different nodes. In this work a solution to optimally schedule the loads assigned to each node is implemented on a real visual sensor network testbed. To minimize the time required to process an image, the size of the subareas assigned to the cooperators are calculated by solving a linear programming problem taking into account the transmission and processing speed of the nodes and the spatial distribution of the visual features. In order to minimize the global workload, an optimal detection threshold is predicted such that only the most significant features are extracted. The solution is implemented on a visual sensor network testbed consisting of BeagleBone Black computers capable of communicating over IEEE 802.11. The capabilities of the testbed are also extended by adapting a reliable transmission protocol based on UDP capable of multicast transmission. The performance of the implemented algorithms is evaluated on the testbed.

Book excerpt: The area of detection and estimation in a distributed wireless sensor network (WSN) has several applications, including military surveillance, sustainability, health monitoring, and Internet of Things (IoT). Compared with a wired centralized sensor network, a distributed WSN has many advantages including scalability and robustness to sensor node failures. In this book, we address the problem of estimating the structure of distributed WSNs. First, we provide a literature review in: (a) graph theory; (b) network area estimation; and (c) existing consensus algorithms, including average consensus and max consensus. Second, a distributed algorithm for counting the total number of nodes in a wireless sensor network with noisy communication channels is introduced. Then, a distributed network degree distribution estimation (DNDD) algorithm is described. The DNDD algorithm is based on average consensus and in-network empirical mass function estimation. Finally, a fully distributed algorithm for estimating the center and the coverage region of a wireless sensor network is described. The algorithms introduced are appropriate for most connected distributed networks. The performance of the algorithms is analyzed theoretically, and simulations are performed and presented to validate the theoretical results. In this book, we also describe how the introduced algorithms can be used to learn global data information and the global data region.

Book excerpt: This SpringerBrief evaluates the cooperative effort of sensor nodes to accomplish high-level tasks with sensing, data processing and communication. The metrics of network-wide convergence, unbiasedness, consistency and optimality are discussed through network topology, distributed estimation algorithms and consensus strategy. Systematic analysis reveals that proper deployment of sensor nodes and a small number of low-cost relays (without sensing function) can speed up the information fusion and thus improve the estimation capability of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). This brief also investigates the spatial distribution of sensor nodes and basic scalable estimation algorithms, the consensus-based estimation capability for a class of relay assisted sensor networks with asymmetric communication topology, and the problem of filter design for mobile target tracking over WSNs. From the system perspective, the network topology is closely related to the capability and efficiency of network-wide scalable distributed estimation. Wireless Sensor Networks: Distributed Consensus Estimation is a valuable resource for researchers and professionals working in wireless communications, networks and distributed computing. Advanced-level students studying computer science and electrical engineering will also find the content helpful.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distributed wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have attracted researchers recently due to their advantages such as low power consumption, scalability and robustness to link failures. In sensor networks with no fusion center, consensus is a process where all the sensors in the network achieve global agreement using only local transmissions. In this dissertation, several consensus and consensus-based algorithms in WSNs are studied. Firstly, a distributed consensus algorithm for estimating the maximum and minimum value of the initial measurements in a sensor network in the presence of communication noise is proposed. In the proposed algorithm, a soft-max approximation together with a non-linear average consensus algorithm is used. A design parameter controls the trade-off between the soft-max error and convergence speed. An analysis of this trade-off gives guidelines towards how to choose the design parameter for the max estimate. It is also shown that if some prior knowledge of the initial measurements is available, the consensus process can be accelerated.Secondly, a distributed system size estimation algorithm is proposed. The proposed algorithm is based on distributed average consensus and L2 norm estimation. Different sources of error are explicitly discussed, and the distribution of the final estimate is derived. The CRBs for system size estimator with average and max consensus strategies are also considered, and different consensus based system size estimation approaches are compared. Then, a consensus-based network center and radius estimation algorithm is described. The center localization problem is formulated as a convex optimization problem with a summation form by using soft-max approximation with exponential functions. Distributed optimization methods such as stochastic gradient descent and diffusion adaptation are used to estimate the center. Then, max consensus is used to compute the radius of the network area. Finally, two average consensus based distributed estimation algorithms are introduced: distributed degree distribution estimation algorithm and algorithm for tracking the dynamics of the desired parameter. Simulation results for all proposed algorithms are provided.
