Book excerpt: The Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) system is an ambitious effort to take advantage of the tools of the information age to help improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the U.S. military services. It involves serious challenges in the areas of technology, interservice coordination, and verification, validation and accreditation (VV & A). The U.S. Army TRADOC Analysis Center (TRAC) has lead responsibility among the services for VV & A of the DIS system. As part of that responsibility, TRAC is sponsoring four efforts aimed at exploring the issues of VV & A of DIS. This report documents one of those four efforts commissioned by the TRAC Director, Mr. Michael Bauman, and is intended to take advantage of previous work done at RAND on exploratory modeling and on validation of models and simulations. The research was conducted in the Force Development and Technology Program of PAND's Arroyo Center, a federally funded research and development center sponsored by the United States Army. The intent of this work is to develop a framework that encompasses all of the potential uses of the DIS system and illuminates the validation or credibility requirements for each type of use. Because of the breadth of the potential uses of DIS, the resulting framework is general enough to address any military application of models and simulations. As such, it should be useful not only to the DIS community, but to developers, users, and consumers of models and simulations throughout the military services.

Book excerpt: The Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) system is an ambitious effort to take advantage of the tools of the information age to help improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the U.S. military services. Defined broadly, the DIS system is an infrastructure for linking simulations, simulators and live military systems of various types from any of the U.S. military services at multiple locations to create realistic, complex, virtual 'worlds' for the simulation of highly interactive activities. It poses serious challenges in the areas of technology, interservice coordination, and verification, validation, and accreditation (VV&A). This report concentrates on the validation challenge and presents a framework that encompasses all of the potential uses of the DIS system. It then illuminates the validation or credibility requirements for each type of use. Because of the breadth of the potential uses of DIS, the resulting framework is general enough to address any military application of models and simulations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This invaluable textbook/reference provides a hands-on guide to the application of good software development practices to the construction of distributed simulation systems, with a particular focus on High Level Architecture (HLA). Emphasizing a learning-by-doing approach supported by examples, the text offers practical advice on real-world development issues for all engineers and programmers entering the field. Topics and features: explains how to rapidly develop an HLA federation, offering an implemented sample for each service area of the HLA federate interface specification; describes this implementation using the freely available software tools SimGe and RACoN; provides numerous step-by-step examples, code snippets, and case studies, as well as links to downloadable sample source code; uses the Microsoft .NET platform and the C# programming language in all examples and case studies; includes review questions throughout the book for further study; examines not only federate application development, but also object model construction; discusses the employment of HLA in multi-agent simulations. Providing an accessible introduction and all-in-one resource for HLA-based distributed simulation development, this book is an essential guide for students and practitioners training in distributed simulation and distributed interactive simulation.

Book excerpt: This research consisted of the analysis, design, and implementation of a reusable application framework for distributed simulation which is compliant with both the DoD High Level Architecture (HLA) for Modeling and Simulation and the Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) standards. The goal was to create an Ada-based system for experimentation in distributed simulation. A subsidiary goal was to integrate the system with an existing Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) application framework for virtual simulations, EasyÆSim. The application framework was designed using object oriented techniques to enable experimenters to customize it via inheritance extension. The application framework, named SimWorx, consists of two sections: an HLA federate skeleton, and a surrogate HLA Run Time Infrastructure (RTI) which has an HLA 'front end" and a DIS 'back end' to provide DIS compatibility. The SimWorx framework was successfully integrated with EasyÆSim to provide an Ada based joint simulation system for distributed virtual simulations.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Computer Science Department at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California has developed a low-cost real-time interactive network based simulation system, known as NPSNET, that uses Silicon Graphics workstations. NPSNET has used non-standard protocols which constrains its participation in distributed simulation. DIS specifies standard protocols and is emerging as the international standard for distributed simulation. This research focused on the development of a robust, high-performance implementation of the DIS Version 2.0.3 protocol to support graphic simulation systems (e.g. NPSNET). The challenge was to comply with the standard and minimize network latency thereby maintaining the time and space coherence of distributed simulations. The resulting DIS Network Library consists of an application program interface (API) to low level network routines, a host of network utilities, and a network harness that takes advantage of multiprocessor workstations. The library was successfully tested on our local network and two configurations of a T-I based internet, the Defense Simulation Internet (DSI), with the Air Force Institute of Technology and Advanced Research Projects Agency. The testing confirmed that the semantics and syntax of the DIS protocol is properly implemented and the latency incurred by the network does not adversely effect the simulation application.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simulation and molding are efficient techniques that can aid the city and regional planners and engineers in optimizing the operation of urban systems such as traffic light control, highway toll automation, consensus building, public safety, and environmental protection. When modeling transportation systems such as freeway systems, arterial or downtown grid systems, the city planner and engineer is concerned with capturing the varied interactions between drivers, automobiles, and the infrastructure. Modeling and simulation are used to effectively optimize the design and operation of all of these urban systems. It is possible that in an urban simulation community workshop, citizens can work interactively in front of computers and be able using the click of the mouse to walk up to their own front porch, looking at the proposed shopping mall alternatives across the street from virtually any angle and proposed bridge or tunnel and see how it can reduce traffic congestion. Buildings can be scaled down or taken out, their orientation can be changed in order to check the view and orientation in order to have better site with efficient energy-conservation. The stone or brick material on a building can be replaced by colored concrete, or more trees and lampposts can be placed on the site. Such flexibility in simulation and animation allows creative ideas in the design and orientation of urban sites to be demonstrated to citizens and decision makers before final realization.

Book excerpt: Simulation is a multi-disciplinary field, and significant simulation research is dispersed across multiple fields of study. Distributed computer systems, software design methods, and new simulation techniques offer synergistic multipliers when joined together in a distributed simulation. Systems of most interest to the simulation practitioner are often the most difficult to model and implement. Distributed Simulation brings together the many complex technologies for distributed simulation. There is strong emphasis on emerging simulation methodologies, including object-oriented, multilevel, and multi-resolution simulation. Finally, one concise text provides a strong foundation for the development of high fidelity simulations in heterogeneous distributed computing environments!
