Book excerpt: This collection documents and examines political and protest theatre produced between the 9/11 attacks in 2001 and Obama’s election in 2008 by British and American artists responding to their own governments’ actions and policies during this time. The plays take up topics such as the ongoing wars on terror, Blair’s support of U.S. policies, the flawed intelligence that led to the Iraq war, and illegal detentions and torture at Abu Ghraib. The authors argue that engaged artists faced a radically different sociopolitical context for their work after 9/11 compared to earlier social protest movements and new forms of theatre, and different emotional strategies were necessary to meet the challenges. The subtitle Patriotic Dissent suggests the double stance of many artists-- influenced by patriotic expressions of national solidarity, yet critical of the ways that patriotic language was put to use against others. The articles represent a broad range of theatre: Broadway musicals, documentary theatre, adaptations of classical theatre, new plays by British playwrights, street performances and installations, and musical concerts. The contributors’ case studies evaluate the effectiveness of important instances of political theatre and protest from this decade, arguing for the significance, relevance, and continuing necessity for evolving forms of political theatre today.

Book excerpt: This dissertation analyzes the practices of political resistance mobilized by different social actors, in the United States, to dissent the implementation of two national security measures adopted after the attacks of September 11th: the Patriot Act of 2001 as well as the detention policies adopted by the Bush administration in the context of the war against terror. Through a theoretical reflection mixing critical approaches of international relations with sociology of social mobilizations and legal and constitutional studies, this project intends on contributing to the field of security studies by furthering the understanding of the securitization/desecuritization processes through an insistence on the necessity to take into account the role played by social actors situated at the external border of the field of the professionals of security and the management of unease. Basing this analysis on the historical evolution of the repertoires of contention of these actors, this dissertation highlights the distanciation of dissent in times of national security crises as well as the preference for resorting to litigation as a way to limit the exceptional powers claimed by the administration. This work contributes to the understanding of the mechanisms of desecuritization and demonstrates the necessity of a more sociological approach of international security issues through the attention paid to the impact of local resistances in the reconceptualization of security policies

Book excerpt: Since the conspicuously broad and vague definition of terrorism in the USA PATRIOT Act, signed into legislation on October 26, 2001 to increase governmental power in domestic security procedures, legal doctrine and normative practices of free speech have become sites of struggle over the meaning of both terrorism and freedom of expression. In 2005, twelve cartoonists drew the Prophet Muhammad for the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten. The subsequent reprints and republications led to boycotts, protests, and riots in over 27 countries culminating in at least 139 deaths. Now known as the Danish cartoons controversy, news and entertainment sources alike narrate a story about protecting a fundamental characteristic of American identity -- free speech -- in the face of a terrorist threat. In American universities, David Horowitz's proposed legislation, the Academic Bill of Rights, targets Left academics, who, according to Horowitz, "influence, in a negative way, America's war on terror." In August 2008, protesters at the Republican National Convention were formally charged with conspiracy to riot in furtherance of terrorism. In this dissertation, I explore how the rhetoric of free speech is a naturalizing and legitimating ideology employed to organize people around particular interests and mobilize them toward particular political ends. My research is guided by the question: How has the ideological terrain of the First Amendment -- specifically, the right to free speech -- changed since September 11, 2001, and why? I argue that rhetoricians should approach the traditional free speech narrative as part of an instrumental political act, as opposed to a universal principle. Cast as a discursive tool in a hegemonic struggle, the traditional free speech narrative offers the potential to open up spaces of protest and infuse ordinary citizens with political agency. Using the method of ideology critique, I develop and test these arguments through three case studies of free speech since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001: the Danish cartoons controversy, David Horowitz's Academic Freedom Campaign, and protests during the 2008 Republican National Convention.
