This book was released on 1987 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mechanism of action, safety, and efficacy of IUDs were reviewed by a WHO Scientific Group in 1986. The Scientific Group concluded that the IUD should continue to be supported, in both developed and developing countries, as a safe, reliable method of fertility regulation. The newer copper-releasing devices are comparable to oral contraceptives in terms of safety and efficacy. When compared to women who use other reversible methods of contraception, IUD users have the lowest mortality resulting from deaths directly attributable to those methods or to the consequences of unwanted pregnancy. In the past decade, research has concentrated on the development of new devices that have both higher continuation rates and lower rates of expulsion and removal for bleeding abnormalities. An important recent concern has been the possible increased risk of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and subsequent tubal infertility associated with IUD use. However, it now appears that methodological problems have caused the IUD-associated risk of PID to be overestimated. The increased risk with IUDs seems to be limited to the 1st 4 months of use. No increased risk of tubal infertility has been found among IUD users in stable, monogamous sexual relationships. The use of a copper IUD after the 1st pregnancy is not associated with secondary infertility due to tubal disease. Finally, the newer copper IUDs have low rates of ectopic pregnancy.

Book Synopsis Comprehensive Cervical Cancer Control by : World Health Organization
Download or read book Comprehensive Cervical Cancer Control written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2006 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most women who die from cervical cancer, particularly in developing countries, are in the prime of their life. They may be raising children, caring for their family, and contributing to the social and economic life of their town or village. Their death is both a personal tragedy, and a sad and unnecessary loss to their family and their community. Unnecessary, because there is compelling evidence, as this Guide makes clear, that cervical cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer, as long as it is detected early and managed effectively. Unfortunately, the majority of women in developing countries still do not have access to cervical cancer prevention programmes. The consequence is that, often, cervical cancer is not detected until it is too late to be cured. An urgent effort is required if this situation is to be corrected. This Guide is intended to help those responsible for providing services aimed at reducing the burden posed by cervical cancer for women, communities and health systems. It focuses on the knowledge and skills needed by health care providers, at different levels of care.

Book Synopsis Chryselephantine Statuary in the Ancient Mediterranean World by : Kenneth D. S. Lapatin
Download or read book Chryselephantine Statuary in the Ancient Mediterranean World written by Kenneth D. S. Lapatin and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composite statues of gold (chrysos), ivory (elephas), and other precious materials were the most celebrated artworks of classical antiquity. Greek and Latin authors leave no doubt that such images provided a centrepiece for religious and civic life and that vast sums were spent to producethem. A number of these statues were the creations of antiquity's most highly acclaimed artists: Polykleitos, Alkamenes, Leochares, and, of course, Pheidias, whose magnificent Zeus Olympios came to be ranked among the Seven Wonders of the World. Although a few individual images such as Pheidias'Athena Parthenos have been the subject of detailed scholarly analysis, chryselephantine statuary as a class, from the exquisite statuettes of Minoan Crete to the majestic temple images constructed by classical Greek city-states and imitated by the Romans, has not received comprehensive study since1815. This book presents not only the ancient literary and epigraphical evidence for lost statues and examines representations of them in other media, but also assembles and analyses much-neglected physical survivals, elucidating throughout the innovative techniques, such as ivory-bending, employedin their production as well as the variety of social, religious, and political roles they played within the ancient societies that produced them.

Book Synopsis Cancer Pain Relief by : World Health Organization
Download or read book Cancer Pain Relief written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 1996 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of a guide, which introduced a simple, yet highly effective method for the relief of cancer pain. Thoroughly revised and updated, the new edition further refines the WHO method, which advocates the use of a small number of relatively inexpensive drugs, including morphine. Revisions draw on experiences with millions of patients around the world as well as new knowledge about the specific pain syndromes unique to cancer. Completely new are chapters describing the international system by which morphine and other opioids are made available for medical purposes. The book has two parts. Part one provides a practical guide to the relief of cancer pain, concentrating on drug treatment as the mainstay of pain management. The most extensive section sets out detailed guidelines for the selection and prescribing of non-opioid analgesics, opioid analgesics, drugs for neuropathic pain, and adjuvant drugs for the treatment of adverse effects, the enhancement of pain relief and the management of concomitant psychological disturbances. Information ranges from explanations of how specific drugs work, through the precautions to take in the presence of certain disorders, to a list of factors that influence the effectiveness of opioids. Concerning the use of opioids, readers are reminded that psychological dependence does not occur in cancer patients and that the only correct dose of morphine is the one that relieves the pain. Part two provides a guide to opioid availability. A discussion of the reasons why opioids continue to be underprescribed or difficult to obtain is followed by an explanation of the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs.
Book Synopsis World Health Organization Guidelines on the Pharmacological Treatment of Persisting Pain in Children with Medical Illnesses by : World Health Organization
Download or read book World Health Organization Guidelines on the Pharmacological Treatment of Persisting Pain in Children with Medical Illnesses written by World Health Organization and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These guidelines have been developed to support countries to relieve pain in their paediatric populations. These guidelines address persisting pain in children caused by conditions such as cancer, HIV/AIDS, sickle-cell disease, burns, trauma, and phantom limb pain. Recommendations -- developed following a careful and transparent appraisal of available evidence -- are presented for the pharmacological treatment of mild, moderate and severe pain. The guidelines include chapters on the various systems used to classify pain and on the evaluation of pain, which reviews the available tools for routine pain measurement in children. Provision of sustainable pain relief within health care systems is covered in a separate chapter. Since morphine and other opioid analgesics -- required for the relief of moderate-to-severe pain in children -- are listed under the 1961 UN Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, the new guidelines include an annex explaining the Convention's requirements for the handling and procurement of opioid analgesics for the relief of pain.

Book Synopsis A Textbook of Postpartum Hemorrhage by : Christopher B-Lynch
Download or read book A Textbook of Postpartum Hemorrhage written by Christopher B-Lynch and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Postpartum hemorrage is a major cause of maternal mortality - especially in the developing world. Estimates vary but it can confidently be stated that well over 250,000 women die as a result of the condition every year. Many of these deaths could be prevented by better and more appropriate treatment, delivered within a time-critical framework. The objective of this book is to bring together within a single volume the most up to date information about the epidemiology, diagnosis and management of postpartum hemmorrhage. Whilst much has been published on the subject a truly comprehensive synthesis of this kind has never before been attempted. This volume sets out, therefore, to provide physicians with an overall clinical perspective that has hitherto been unavailable. The volume is essentially practical in orientation addressing specific issues that confront any obstetrician responsible for the management of postpartum hemorrhage. In particular it features new surgical techniques that have been shown to be markedly successful and straigh forward to apply, and which have clear advantages over emergency hysterectomy in many instances. Other important issues that are reviewed in detail include causation, prevention, therapy for atonic and non-atonic conditions, and long term consequenses Written by an international team of specially invited experts, this book should meet a genuine need. In particular it is hoped it will contribute in a practical way to management of postpartum hemorrhage in developing countries where scarcity of resources may be compounded by a lack of clinically reliable information about the last theraputic advances
