Book excerpt: Cette thèse comprend deux parties : d'une part la caractérisation des propriétés acoustiques de surface des céramiques piézoélectriques à grains fins, d'autre part la réalisation d'un capteur d'humidité et l'étude des ondes de Rayleigh se propageant dans un substrat piézoélectrique recouvert par un film mince viscoélastique. Dans la première partie, nous présentons tout d'abord les méthodes de caractérisation développées, dont certaines s' appuient sur la mesure de l'impédance électrique de transducteurs à peignes interdigités. Nous donnons ensuite les résultats d'une étude portant sur l'influence des conditions de fabrication des céramiques et le rôle des éléments dopants sur les propriétés de ces céramiques. Nous montrons en particulier qu'un traitement par pressage isostatique à chaud réduit notablement les pertes par propagation des ondes de surface. Dans la seconde partie, nous mettons en oeuvre un capteur d'humidité basé non pas sur la mesure des variations de vitesse de l'onde de surface, mais sur celle des variations d'amplitude de l'onde acoustique. Les résultats expérimentaux obtenus nous amènent ensuite à étendre la notion de permittivité piézoélectrique de surface au cas d'un substrat piézoélectrique recouvert par un film mince viscoélastique. Nous nous intéressons pour finir aux phénomènes de résonances de films polymères minces, et nous montrons que ce phénomène peut très bien être analysé grâce aux méthodes développées précédemment.

Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities.
