Until he met Ciere and her crew of superpowered thieves, Alan Fiacre's life had been singularly focused on safeguarding the vaccine that changed the world. As an eidos, and reluctant heir to his father's legacy, it was his duty to ensure the formula never fell into the wrong hands. So it came as something of a shock to learn the right hands might belong to criminals. Now Alan and Ciere are conscripted into service with the Gyr Syndicate, notorious mobsters set on taking down all of the other crime families in the United States. Their latest mission: a train heist meant to derail a covert arms deal. It will put Alan--and the formula--in more danger than he's ever faced before. But if he's learned nothing else from Ciere, it's that there's more to life than survival. Word Count: ~12,000 words

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a philosophical exploration of disorientation and its significance for action. Disorientations are human experiences of losing one's bearings, such that life is disrupted and it is not clear how to go on. In the face of life experiences like trauma, grief, illness, migration, education, queer identification, and consciousness raising, individuals can be deeply disoriented. These and other disorientations are not rare. Although disorientations can be common and powerful parts of individuals' lives, they remain uncharacterized by Western philosophers, and overlooked by ethicists. Disorientations can paralyze, overwhelm, embitter, and misdirect moral agents, and moral philosophy and motivational psychology have important insights to offer into why this is. More perplexing are the ways disorientations may prompt improved moral action. Ami Harbin draws on first person accounts, philosophical texts, and qualitative and quantitative research to show that in some cases of disorientation, individuals gain new forms of awareness of political complexity and social norms, and new habits of relating to others and an unpredictable moral landscape. She then argues for the moral and political promise of these gains. A major contention of the book is that disorientations have 'non-resolutionary effects': they can help us act without first helping us resolve what to do. In exploring these possibilities, Disorientation and Moral Life contributes to philosophy of emotions, moral philosophy, and political thought from a distinctly feminist perspective. It makes the case for seeing disorientations as having the power to motivate profound and long-term shifts in moral and political action. A feminist re-envisioning of moral psychology provides the framework for understanding how they do so.

Book excerpt: Like many “language buffs,” I recall no time when my world was without words. It was my fortunate lot to follow their beguiling tunes until toys turned into tools, and I became a wordsmith—writer and teacher. The essays in this book are digressions on the light side of that career, a continuing game of word play, a motley cluster of errant shots with my grammar wedge, the twists and turns of things on the tip of my tongue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lyrically written memoir showing the growth of a writer and his unique perceptions of the 1950s, 60s and beyond. Echoing the erratic shape of remembrance, Kevin Ireland's second volume of memoirs is 'derived from impressions, conversations, anecdotes and poems, and its vague focus is a trip to Eastern Europe', which he took by chance in 1959. Leading directly and haphazardly towards and away from this single happening - leaping from London to Bulgaria to New Zealand and back - it explores the process of recollection itself. Outlining Kevin's experiences of friends, love and work - in such diverse places as a 'translation polishing' office in Bulgaria and the 'revisionists' department of The Times - this book shows the growth of a writer and his unique perceptions of the 1950s, 60s and beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The epic story of the Boer War and Harry 'Breaker' Morant: drover, horseman, bush poet - murderer or hero? Most Australians have heard of the Boer War and of Harry 'Breaker' Morant, a figure who rivals Ned Kelly as an archetypal Australian folk hero. But Morant was a complicated man. Born in England and immigrating to Queensland in 1883, he established a reputation as a rider, polo player and poet who submitted ballads to The Bulletin and counted Banjo Paterson as a friend. Travelling on his wits and the goodwill of others, Morant was quick to act when appeals were made for horsemen to serve in the war in South Africa. He joined up, first with the South Australian Mounted Rifles and then with a South African irregular unit, the Bushveldt Carbineers. The adventure would not go as Breaker planned. In October 1901 Lieutenant Harry Morant and two other Australians, Lieutenants Peter Handcock and George Witton, were arrested for the murder of Boer prisoners. Morant and Handcock were court-martialled and executed in February 1902 as the Boer War was in its closing stages, but the debate over their convictions continues to this day. With his masterful command of story, Peter FitzSimons takes us to the harsh landscape of southern Africa and into the bloody action of war against an unpredictable force using modern commando tactics. The truths FitzSimons uncovers about 'the Breaker' and the part he played in the Boer War are astonishing - and finally we will know if the Breaker was a hero, a cad, a scapegoat or a criminal.

Book excerpt: On a damp October night, the body of young, beautiful Ashley Cordova is found in an abandoned warehouse in lower Manhattan. By all appearances her death is a suicide--but investigative journalist Scott McGrath suspects otherwise. Though much has been written about the dark and unsettling films of Ashley's father, Stanislas Cordova, very little is known about the man himself. As McGrath pieces together the mystery of Ashley's death, he is drawn deeper and deeper into the dark underbelly of New York City and the twisted world of Stanislas Cordova, and he begins to wonder--is he the next victim? In this novel, the dazzlingly inventive writer Marisha Pessl offers a breathtaking mystery that will hold you in suspense until the last page is turned.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone has his or her favorite stories. The best stories come straight from true-life events. Everyday life can be surprising, invigorating, horrifying, glorious, down right sad or full of hope. Everyone has a best day and a worse day. Sometimes you don’t need to embellish a story because often you can’t beat the facts for entertainment or imagination. These stories are a collection of events that took place over half a century in the course of a normal average life. These stories prove that mere mortals sometimes have no control over their destiny as it unfolds immediately in front of them.
