Utilizing the fact that colleges dismiss low-performing students based on exact GPA cutoffs, we use a regression discontinuity design to estimate the earnings impacts of college. Dismissed students are permitted to apply for readmission, but since relatively few do so, these students end up completing fewer years of school and are approximately 10 percentage points less likely to graduate college. Our estimates suggest that low-performing students (on the margin of college dismissal) derive substantial earnings benefits from college.

Using data from two cohort groups, the study investigated three central objectives: 1) the differences in student academic performance of reinstated students under the old academic standards compared to the performance under the new academic standards. (2) To explore the academic success rates of students on probation plan (PP) compared with students on probation cumulative (PC) plan and (3) to explore the differences in academic performance of students on a probation plan (PP) based on extenuating circumstance that led to academic dismissal. Overall, results indicated that recent changes to the Academic Standards policy have had a positive impact on student success.

Book excerpt: The Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution holds that states must provide due process and equal protection to those with a life, liberty, or property right. College students have a property and liberty interest in the public education that they receive and the courts require notice and hearing before a deprivation of one of these interests. As administrators in higher education face the challenges involved in properly deciding disputes with students, they can find guidance in a line of U.S. Supreme Court cases that describe due process in terms of the proper relationship between American citizens and their government. By understanding the process that state governments are required by the Fourteenth Amendment to provide, administrators can determine a method of fair inquiry. The problem of this study is focused on the need for university administrators to have a good understanding of the procedures that should be followed when faced with dismissing a student. The fear of litigation has tempted administrators at some institutions of higher education to spend unjustified amounts of money, to award unjustified grades, and even to modify longstanding academic requirements. The basis of this fear stems from uncertainty of the law, especially the responsibilities generated by the Fourteenth Amendment. Many administrators at public institutions of higher education understand that the Fourteenth Amendment requires due process before depriving one of a property or liberty interest, but they are confused about the practical steps that should be followed. The purpose of this study is to examine federal and state court cases related to the dismissal of a student from an institution of higher education during the period of 1981-2008. The cases were briefed and examined for trends. Additionally, court decisions provided information that may be useful for higher education administrators. Trends discovered were identified and reported, conclusions were developed from the rulings of the courts, and guiding principles were established for higher education administrators.

Book excerpt: In 1950, Giesecke and Hancock observed that the decision to readmit students who have been dismissed due to poor academic performance "is made more often than not on the basis of inspired guesswork" (p. 72). The present study sought to answer the question---is there a certain type of student who is successful upon readmission---by heeding Warman's (1956) advice and examining noncognitive variables as represented in students' readmission application essays. Essays were drawn from 140 readmitted students' files in an academic advising unit designed for undeclared students at a mid-sized Midwestern university. Essays were coded pertaining to 16 different noncognitive variables representing students' self-reported behavior prior to suspension, their attributions about their academic difficulties, and other qualities of the essays, and Hope Theory (Snyder, 1991, 2002) was used as a framework to conceptualize students' pathways thoughts and agency thoughts relative to their success following readmission. K-means cluster analyses were used to group individuals according to similarity on the noncognitive variables, and crosstabulations were performed at each of four "success observation points" (SOPs) following readmission to assess how accurately the cluster groups identified "successful" and "unsuccessful" students. For the present sample, noncognitive variables associated with students' plans for improving their academic standing were the most accurate in categorizing students as successful or unsuccessful at three of the four SOPS. The noncognitive variables that most accurately categorized successful and unsuccessful students at the final SOP were: class attendance, interaction with instructors and advisors, utilization of campus resources, pathways thoughts, agency thoughts, essay length, essay grammar, and overall essay presentation. The cluster groups generated by the combinations of noncognitive variables accurately identified 66 of 90 (73.3%) successful students for SOP1, 43 of 57 (75.4%) for SOP2, 33 of 50 (66%) for SOP3, and 22 of 39 (56.4%) for SOP4. Therefore, utilizing strategically chosen noncognitive factors when making important readmission decisions is an improvement over the current system. These results provide evidence that the pathways thoughts and agency thoughts components of Hope Theory (Snyder, 1991, 2002) can be translated into noncognitive variables that seem to be linked to academic success following college readmission.
