Book excerpt: Researchers have devoted considerable attention to how people learn to read, specifically how they recognise, pronounce, and understand printed words. These studies are helping to illuminate not only the normal process of learning to read but also the problems that may underlie dyslexia, a condition in which people are unable to acquire a high degree of reading skill despite adequate intelligence and training. When reading instruction begins, children (as well as adult learners) already possess large spoken-word vocabularies. Their initial task is to learn how these spoken words correspond to written alphabetic symbols. Impairments in this reading skill are often seen among children who have problems learning in school. Dyslexia is a brain-based type of learning disability that specifically impairs a person's ability to read. These individuals typically read at levels significantly lower than expected despite having normal intelligence. Although the disorder varies from person to person, common characteristics among people with dyslexia are difficulty with phonological processing (the manipulation of sounds) and/or rapid visual-verbal responding.

Book excerpt: This book is written with all my love to share what I, from my own experience, have had to live as a mother, teacher and Davis® facilitator. As I listen to other parents tell me about their journeys through therapies, doctors and diagnoses, I realize how much the stories and concerns coincide when one of our children begins to have learning difficulties, be it attention deficit, dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, hyperactivity, or ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). As parents, we want to help them, however, the fact of having educational knowledge or even being an expert in the subject does not exempt us from being completely in hands of doctors, therapists, teachers and school directors, and be subject to their guidance.

Yet, many children struggle in learning to write, and often this is related to difficulties in the development of their oral-language skills. For students with oral language difficulties text production is particularly challenging, yet there have been few attempts to consider the impact of different oral language problems on the production of written text. This book focuses on the relationship between oral language problems and writing problems for children with hearing loss, those with oral-language difficulties and those with dyslexia. The causes and nature of their writing problems are examined by experts in the fields. Authors from three continents and nine countries contributed their research to extend our understanding of the problems that these children face. The collection provides timely information across languages and countries, enhancing our understanding of the links between oral language problems and writing, informing both writing assessment and intervention.

Book excerpt: Reading involves decoding and comprehension components and, to become efficient, it requires a large number of cognitive and linguistic processes. Among those, the phonological awareness, the alphabetic principle, the decoding, the fluency, the lexical development and the text comprehension development. The reading comprehension is strongly related with the development of vocabulary, oral language, linguistic skills, memory skills and ability to make inferences, and the world experiences of each individual. These processes become important only when the professional needs to deal with students presenting difficulties in learning how to read. The difficulty using the knowledge of conversion rules between grapheme and phoneme to the word reading construction characterizes the dyslexia, which is a specific learning disorder with a neurological source. These difficulties presented by students with dyslexia interfere in their learning process impairing the learning development. Knowing and following the reading development and its processes, as well as obtaining the punctuation of fluency abilities and students comprehension allow us to understand what happens when the student presents difficulties to read. This could help in the identification of learning disabilities and in the development of intervention programs.
