The Kargonian Empire is furiously pressing their attacks on the remaining strongholds of The Kingdom of Caroth-Nor on all fronts. King Ubisar and his inner circle remain holed up in Isharis Keep, where Archous and Siran are headed to aid in the defense of the King and the Watcher Council against the dreaded onslaught of the Kargonian Army. In disgrace over his failure to obtain Arznac's talisman, Lord Gaul has been banished from Overlord Zeinar's presence as he and the Empress begin their search for the "Great Swords." Despite this, Lord Gaul continues to operate his own agenda and sets in motion his long awaited plans. Book Synopsis Dishonored Americans by : Timothy Compeau
Download or read book Dishonored Americans written by Timothy Compeau and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2023-11-29 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the final words of the Declaration of Independence, the signatories famously pledged to one another their lives, their fortunes, and their "sacred Honor." But what about those who made the opposite choice? By looking through the analytical lens of honor culture, Dishonored Americans offers an innovative assessment of the experience of Americans who made the fateful decision to remain loyal to the British Crown during and after the Revolution. Loyalists, as Timothy Compeau explains, suffered a "political death" at the hands of American Patriots. A term drawn from eighteenth-century sources, ‘political death’ encompassed the legal punishments and ritualized dishonors Patriots used to defeat Loyalist public figures and discredit their counter-revolutionary vision for America. By highlighting this dynamic, Compeau makes a significant intervention in the long-standing debate over the social and cultural factors that motivated colonial Americans to choose sides in the conflict, narrating in compelling detail the severe consequences for once-respected gentlemen who were stripped of their rights, privileges, and power in Revolutionary America.

Book Synopsis History of the Reformation in the Time of Calvin by : Merle D'Aubigne, J. H.
Download or read book History of the Reformation in the Time of Calvin written by Merle D'Aubigne, J. H. and published by Delmarva Publications, Inc.. This book was released on 2010-04-15 with total page 2470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Merle D’Aubigne published two series of historical works for which he is most famous. The first was The History of the Reformation in the Sixteenth Century, a five volume set containing twenty books and covering every country in Europe and every major figure of that time. He stated, “I believe that the Reformation is a work of God; this must have been already seen. Still, I hope to be impartial in tracing its history. Of the principal Roman Catholic actors in this great drama, for example, of Leo X, Albert of Magdeburg, Charles V, and Doctor Eck—I believe I have spoken more favourably than the greater part of historians have done.” The second series was The History of The Reformation in the Times of Calvin and was originally published as sixteen books bound in eight volumes. Each volume was published and released as the author completed the books which were contained in that volume. Therefore, each volume (with the exclusion of volume 2) has its own introduction. The volumes were broken down thusly: Volume 1 contained Book 1 and part of 2, Volume 2 contained the remainder of book 2 and all of book 3, Volume 3 contained books 4 and 5, Volume 4 contained books 6 and 7, Volume 5 contained books 8 and 9, Volume 6 contained book 10 and part of 11, Volume 7 contained the remainder of book 11 and all of books 12 and 13, and Volume 8 contained books 14, 15, and 16.
Book Synopsis The Academy of Fisticuffs by : Sophus A. Reinert
Download or read book The Academy of Fisticuffs written by Sophus A. Reinert and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-28 with total page 689 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The terms “capitalism” and “socialism” continue to haunt our political and economic imaginations, but we rarely consider their interconnected early history. Even the eighteenth century had its “socialists,” but unlike those of the nineteenth, they paradoxically sought to make the world safe for “capitalists.” The word “socialists” was first used in Northern Italy as a term of contempt for the political economists and legal reformers Pietro Verri and Cesare Beccaria, author of the epochal On Crimes and Punishments. Yet the views and concerns of these first socialists, developed inside a pugnacious intellectual coterie dubbed the Academy of Fisticuffs, differ dramatically from those of the socialists that followed. Sophus Reinert turns to Milan in the late 1700s to recover the Academy’s ideas and the policies they informed. At the core of their preoccupations lay the often lethal tension among states, markets, and human welfare in an era when the three were becoming increasingly intertwined. What distinguished these thinkers was their articulation of a secular basis for social organization, rooted in commerce, and their insistence that political economy trumped theology as the underpinning for peace and prosperity within and among nations. Reinert argues that the Italian Enlightenment, no less than the Scottish, was central to the emergence of political economy and the project of creating market societies. By reconstructing ideas in their historical contexts, he addresses motivations and contingencies at the very foundations of modernity.

Download or read book Warrior's Dishonour written by George Kassimeris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The characteristic act of men at war is not killing. It is killing by committing shocking and unspeakable atrocities, when circumstances permit. What drives ordinary people into hatred, genocide, inhumanity and evil? What turns friends and neighbours against each other with such savagery? Where does such barbarity come from? This collection examines the anarchy, cruelty and overwhelming confusion of modern warfare. In particular it analyzes: ¢ what happens when morality vanishes from the battlefield and why torture is endemic in modern warfare; ¢ how human rights, in times of war, lose meaning as a set of principles; ¢ whether official propaganda and enemy demonization make barbaric behaviour easier; ¢ how we can develop cultures opposed to torture that damage the legitimacy of our societies. Through a wealth of case studies that have been carefully selected in terms of their themes, approaches and methodologies, this comprehensive volume provokes discussion and enhances understanding from a variety of disciplinary perspectives.

Book Synopsis Life/Death Rhythms of Capitalist Regimes – Debt Before Dishonour by : Will Slatyer
Download or read book Life/Death Rhythms of Capitalist Regimes – Debt Before Dishonour written by Will Slatyer and published by Partridge Publishing Singapore. This book was released on 2014-09-16 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life/Death Rhythms of Capitalist Regimes Debt before Dishonour explores the cyclical theory of cultural development, with particular attention paid to the introduction of democratic forms of government in the British Empire and the United States republic. The cyclical theory allows a forecast of the fading of the dominance of the United States as an imperial power. Similar to cultural survival of the loss of dominance experienced by the British Empire after the Great War, the United States will survive in a new form. Which superpower will take over the reins remains to be seen, but the likely contender is the Peoples Republic of China. This conclusion and the timing will allow long-term planning by corporations and governments. In the age of political correctness, it is unlikely that readers will experience any such forecasts by government bodies. Throughout history, societies have used and abused debt, revolted and warred over debt, and have forbidden usury. But the modern financial world as we know it simply cannot exist without usury. Since the 1400s, modern governments have found new ways to expand debt to produce modern economies, which are still subject to the age-old basic principle of debt that it needs to be repaid or dire consequences ensue. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. George Santayana (1863 1952)
