Book excerpt: Abstract: Numerous free-flying adult aquatic insect species use polarized light signatures to locate waterbodies on which they reproduce and where larval stages live for the majority of their lives. Manmade objects and structures are capable of mimicking these polarized light signatures and in many cases create signatures which are more attractive to aquatic insects than water itself. This effect causes severe ecological traps which threaten aquatic insects with population declines or extinctions. Previous studies have shown that the attraction of highly polarizing synthetic sources can be mitigated by strategic grids of non-polarizing lines. This represents an appealing mechanistic conservation work around. This paper, through multiple choice preference experiments, measured the effect that line thickness had on the deterring quality of a grid scheme. Our results showed that across non-biting midges (Chironomidae), black flies (Simulliidea), caddisflies (Trichoptera), and mayflies (Ephemeroptera) thickness of the non-polarizing line was an essential factor in the deterring effect. Our thinnest lined trap scheme (lines1̃mm) captured equivalent numbers of insects to that of our highly polarizing control. My results also show novel interactions of different taxa and body size with the polarizing signatures of our experimental traps. My research has novel implications for both academic understanding of aquatic insect habitat selection and applied conservation strategies.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Many animals assess habitat quality using indirect cues. These cues may be reliable indicators ordinarily, but when humans alter the environment, animals may prefer unsuitable habitats. Such ecological traps may be especially problematic for animals that settle preferentially near conspecifics. This mechanism of habitat selection, called conspecific attraction (CA), could lead to heightened extinction risk if individuals caught in the trap lure too many additional settlers. Any such "bandwagon effect" could be ephemeral, though, because individuals that do settle in better habitats should be more successful and so these habitats might accumulate more individuals over the long run. The population could then escape despite an initial congregation of entrapped individuals. We ask whether CA, compared with other mechanisms, may provide such an escape. Only philopatry, preference for the natal habitat, provides a consistent escape. CA performs poorly because individuals lure one another reiteratively into traps. In the face of global change, it is important to recognize how ordinarily adaptive mechanisms of choice can compromise population growth under novel conditions. Such Allee effects may be especially pronounced when individuals seek the company of conspecifics. We highlight the need to avoid setting ecological traps, particularly for species prone to the bandwagon effect.

It has been the subject of a wide-ranging debate, and was one of the central themes of the anti-globalization movement. This book explores this debate. It argues that by focusing on the WTO, this debate failed to understand the institutional and discursive complexity in which the trade-environment conflict is embedded. A legal investigation of this nexus requires a framework of inquiry, which is capable of elucidating this complexity - a model of global legal pluralism. This book develops such a model. This pluralistic viewpoint portrays the trade and environment conflict as the product of multiple dilemmas, constituted and negotiated by a myriad of institutional and discursive networks. As such, this conflict cannot be analyzed or understood through one-dimensional models. Viewing the trade-environment conflict through pluralistic lenses yields important practical insights. It means that this conflict cannot be resolved by uniform economic or legal formulas. Dealing with this conflict requires, rather, polycentric and contextual strategy. The empirical part of the book explicates this thesis by examining several global legal domains, ranging from the WTO to "private" transnational regimes such as transnational litigation and the field of international financial law.
